What I Learned Watching My Mom Care For Her Own Mother
I was 10 years old when my grandfather passed away and my grandmother moved in. Before the tragedy of my grandfather's death, and the gift of living in the same house as my grandmother, she had been battling cancer. During that time, my mom split her days between raising her four children and nursing her own parent back to health.
For the next 13 years, my grandmother not only lived with us but was also actively involved in every aspect of our lives. She was a second mother, but I learned just as much from my grandmother's anecdotes and important life lessons as I did watching my mom dedicate her days to caring for my grandma's well-being - both physically and emotionally. My mom had to make difficult choices daily, feeling pulled in both directions as she tried to care for both her children and her own parent. These are the 11 major lessons I learned from it.
- You're never just a parent or just a child: As you progress from one stage of life to the next, you don't leave everything behind. Even as my mom became a mom herself, she was always a daughter first and wouldn't let her new role completely overshadow the fact that she was also someone's daughter.
- It doesn't matter if you're a stay-at-home mom or a working mom, there are always compromises: My mom had a full-time job as a nurse before stepping away from her career when she had kids. She had just gone back to work for the first time in 15 years as her youngest entered elementary school when my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, followed a few years later by my grandfather's sudden death. From that point on, my grandmother moved in and my mom permanently walked away from her career in order to care for all of us. Even though she wasn't "working," she still constantly had to choose between her kids and her mom, make sacrifices over what events to miss in order to make doctor's appointments, and was always dealing with guilt about not being able to do it all.
-
There's always something to be learned from your mom - at every stage of life: Everyone found my mom and grandmother hysterical because their natural form of communication was bickering. The older they got, the more similar they became until some strangers even mistook them for twins (much to my mom's horror). But through this friendship in their adult years, my mom always took my grandmother's thoughts and perspective into account. Despite being a grown women who was successfully raising four kids in her own right, she was still humble enough to recognize good advice, even when she didn't ask for it, and appreciate the value of a grandmother's experiences.
-
Sometimes being a good child is when you don't put yours first: Some criticized my mom for putting her parent before herself or her family and constantly told her it was a choice they would never make. My mom did make an effort to prioritize my grandmother in the last years of her life and worked daily to make sure that she was supported, valued, and loved. Even if it meant that that we didn't have her undivided attention at all times of day, we gained something so much more: a strong moral code that doesn't turn your back on family.
-
You go wherever you are needed most: Whether she was dealing with four kids or her mom, my mom's go-to motto was that she always goes where she is needed most. Like making a triage assessment, she learned early on that she can't be there for every person at the exact same time so she had to constantly reprioritize who needed her most at any given moment.
- A relationship with grandparents is one of the best things you can ever give your child: I didn't grow up with just one mother, I was raised with two. Although I always used to joke when my grandma was giving me a hard time that I wished I had the adoring grandparent who made me cookies and told me how perfect I was, I'm beyond grateful for all of her advice. I had a grandma who was completely involved in every aspect - including the bad - and wasn't afraid to tell me when I was wrong in order to help shape me into the person I've become.
- You might not always agree with someone but you always show respect: The generation that my grandma raised kids in was drastically different than the one my mom was raising us in. Many times my grandma didn't agree with or even understand the decisions my mom was making, but we were still taught to listen and show respect for her dissenting opinion and value her perspective.
-
The time you spend with someone is more valuable than any gift or bouquet of flowers: From doctors' appointments and hospital stays to just helping pass the time playing cards, my mom was there for my grandma. While other loved ones sent a card on Mother's Day or stopped by with the occasional box of candy, I was able to see firsthand that time is way more precious than what you spend on someone.
- It isn't about what you cook, it's about who is around the table eating it: When she was raising kids, my grandmother would spend hours cooking dinner before setting the table for a nightly family meal. When she moved in, my mom carried on this tradition - only she despised cooking. But she still worked to ensure that we always had a family dinner every night, even if it came from Costco's prepared food section.
-
Find a spouse who not only supports you but also supports your extended family: When my grandmother moved in, it didn't just affect my mom or us kids, but it also changed my dad's day-to-day life. He put her first, just like my mom did.
- The world doesn't revolve around you - and that's a good thing: My mom and my grandmother's relationship showed us kids that life doesn't center around the children in the house. It was just as important to help when was needed as kids and do things for others - including spending a Saturday night watching black-and-white movies instead of going out with friends in order to cheer someone up who we loved the most in this world.
This 20th Century Fox Flute Meme Costume Is the Internet's Dream Come True
Turning epic soundtracks into perfectly awful re-creations is an art that the internet has perfected over the course of the past decade, resulting in several hilarious viral videos and a new genre of memes. The most iconic of this internet movement is the "20th Century Fox Bad Flute" video, which is widely beloved on YouTube and Reddit. We never expected somebody to turn this viral video into their Halloween costume, but one Redditor made it his mission to capture everything that makes the meme so great into one wearable getup . . . with musical accompaniment, of course!
According to the costume creator himself, the best part about the costume is that it becomes more successful when it looks and sounds bad, so he didn't have to try very hard.

One Awesome Dad Just Won Halloween With This Amazing Lego Costume For His Son
Spent 2 months making Lego Spiderman, my son won first place at his contest from pics
One dad wanted to make sure his kid stood out this Halloween. The proud father, Reddit user fivetreoh, says he created this epic Lego costume to do the trick. He spent two months working on the costume, which landed his son first place in a costume contest along with a $25 gift card.
If you're wondering how he was able to pull off the realistic look, the awesome dad reveals that it took a lot of strategic planning. The lightweight costume was made out of one-inch styrofoam, and for the eyes, he cut out the shape and then replaced the open space with a white screen for his son to see out of.
"Everything blue is paint and the red on the helmet is paint," he revealed, adding, "the front of the costume is actually a vinyl decal, not paint." This guy deserves to win a dad of the year contest for his creativity and efforts put into this amazing costume!

Meet the Yogurt That Blows Greek Yogurt Out of the Water; Dr. Oz Weighs In
While Dr. Oz's last food investigation may have crushed our fast-food oatmeal dreams and the one before that made us second-guess our too-good-to-be-true addictive rotisserie chicken, we're actually really excited about the good news coming from the health show.
In his latest deep dive into the foods we consider healthy, Dr. Oz takes a closer look at Greek yogurt. The findings? All positive! He notes that benefits from Greek-style yogurt include an improved immune system, a digestion boost, and a better mood - so load up the yogurt!
After looking into brands like Chobani, Fage, Oikos by Danon, Simply Balanced, Wallaby Organics, and Stonyfield Organics, Dr. Oz found "great news" that each brand passed with "flying colors," and they each contain 200 million to 300 million CFUs of live active cultures per gram of yogurt (CFU = "colony forming units"; it's how probiotics are measured).
Where you get into sticky territory is with flavored yogurts - all of which they found to have tons of sugar, which turns an otherwise low-carb, high-protein snack into a very high-carb, high-protein snack. Their suggestion? "Eat plain Greek yogurt" and add in sliced fresh fruit, or put some honey in yourself so you know it's "not synthetic" and you can control the amount.
But wait - Dr. Oz didn't just tout the benefits of Greek yogurt, he also showed off the new yogurt that may leave its Greek cousin in the dust thanks to a whopping "25 percent more protein." The new ultra-high-protein snack to look out for? Icelandic.
"Icelandic yogurt is to Greek yogurt as Greek yogurt is to regular yogurt," said Dr. Oz's expert Mark Schatzker. "It's like the ultimate strained yogurt . . . it's just really creamy and really rich. It's a very satisfying yogurt. If you like Greek yogurt, you're going to love this stuff."
So there you have it - get your servings of plain Greek yogurt, and keep an eye out for the delicious and healthy Icelandic variety, too.

Mamba is a self-described "romantic with an overbite", so if the whole internet famous vampire thing doesn't work out, he's got a solid Tinder bio regardless. By the looks of his burgeoning "fang club" on Instagram, we don't think a backup plan will be necessary.

5 Disney Villain Costumes That Prove Bad Girls Have More Fun (With Makeup!)
Although I love a good Disney princess, they tend to rock the #nomakeupmakeup look. The Disney villains, however, are on top of their makeup game. Red lips, sharp contouring, and arched brows run rampant in the villain world, and I can't say I don't approve. It just seems the villains of the Disney universe have more fun and are certainly craftier with their makeup brushes.
When it comes to Halloween, take the opportunity to pull out your brightest eye shadows, most reflective highlighter, and pigmented lipsticks and go to work transforming yourself into someone completely different: a Disney villain.

Puma's Self-Lacing Sneakers Are Giving Nike's a Run For Their Money
On the heels of Nike's announcement about its HyperAdapt 1.0 sneakers, Puma has finally revealed its own self-lacing sneakers, the Autodiscs. The brand previewed the self-lacing sneakers in 2015 when Usain Bolt tried them on in a Twitter video, however, information about the shoes had been pretty scarce until now.
Engadget got an exclusive look at the kicks and answered everyone's main question: how exactly do they work? Well, the Autodiscs have neat, built-in motors hidden in the tongue of the sneakers. The motor is triggered with the push of a button that then loosens or tightens the hidden laces inside of the shoe.
What's more, the owner's preferred tightness can be saved on the shoe's corresponding smartphone app. To charge your Autodiscs, simply place them on their special charging mat.
While we're already sold, sadly, the Autodiscs aren't officially available. According to Engadget, only 50 pairs have been made and Puma has yet to announce when they will be open to the public . . . and for how much.

You Won't Believe the Wedding Dress Switcheroo That Jamie Chung Made on Her Wedding Day

But the fashionista couldn't bear to part with a different dress: a high-neck Jonathan Simkhai number that took a modern Victorian silhouette
Jamie and Bryan's ceremony and reception were featured in Martha Stewart Wedding's Spring issue, and that's where Ms. Chung revealed her smart little trick: she posed for photos in Jonathan Simkhai alongside her bridesmaids, who wore coordinated Privacy Please maxis, then Jamie switched into her whimsical Monique number. These pint-size patients were dressed with care in handcrafted costumes - including a jar of JIF peanut butter and a Chicago Bulls basketball player - by the nurses for the annual NICU Halloween costume contest, and they couldn't have looked any cuter.

Hate Your Skin Tags? Here's What You Can Do About It
There are a few beauty woes that are just unavoidable, no matter how sincere your efforts are to bypass them. Rain will ruin your hair at least once. You'll smudge your lipstick. And, at some point, your epidermis will sprout a skin tag. We consulted Manhattan dermatologist Dr. Neal Schultz, host of DermTV.com and creator of BeautyRx by Dr. Schultz. He gave us the scoop on what these bothersome bumps are, what causes them, and (if you must!) how to get rid of them yourself.
When dealing with a complexion issue, it's important to know what you're up against. First, make sure what you're looking at is actually a skin tag. Unlike moles, which are usually pink to brown in color and feature symmetrical borders, skin tags are more oddly shaped and tend to match your complexion's shade.
"They grow out from your body, but vertically," Dr. Schultz stated. The benign tumors are comprised of epidermis and a little bit of dermis — the two upper layers of skin. "Their height is usually much greater than their width. Sometimes they have a very narrow stalk so they are virtually hanging off by a thread," he explained.
When I asked Dr. Schultz what causes these pesky spots, he told me that this remains unknown. "To a certain extent, they are hereditary and tend to occur in certain characteristic places, where skin folds on skin," he said. Skin tags frequently crop up under the arms and where the legs meet the body. "They seem to occur more often in people that are overweight," the doctor added.
However, if your skin tags are darker than your complexion, you may be dealing with dermatosis papulosa nigra, or DPN, a raised skin lesion that is commonly seen on complexions of those of Hispanic, Asian, or African descent. Dr. Schultz said that these tend to occur around eyes and on the cheekbones. "They look similar [to skin tags] but are not the same." These benign tumors come from keratinocytes, the cells that are responsible for producing skin pigment.

If you were concerned that these skin conditions were a sign of cancer or another ailment, relax. Neither DPN nor skin tags are an indication of any health risks. "They're not dangerous," declared Dr. Schultz. "Just annoying and inconvenient."
Despite being innocuous, you might find your skin tags to be unsightly. If that's the case, a dermatologist can remove them fairly easily. Dr. Schultz prefers to use the tip of a very fine pair of scissors to snip a skin tag off at the base. Other options include using an electric needle to cauterize the skin or freezing off the tumor, which he particularly doesn't recommend.
"Freezing is so imprecise that it tends to affect the skin around the skin tag," he explained. And it's this imprecision that disturbs him when patients try to remove these bumps themselves.
"While it doesn't take eight years of medical education to remove a skin tag, there are certain basic principles that have to be observed," Dr. Schultz cautioned, citing using sterile tools and completely disinfecting your skin as essential.
While we don't recommend taking off your own skin tags, if you feel that you must, Dr. Schultz declared that the most sensible method is to use a tight piece of string. We advise consulting with your doctor beforehand, then proceeding with caution!
Use a sterile piece of gauze and isopropyl alcohol to thoroughly cleanse the area and a length of thread. After looping the string around the very base of the skin tag, double knot it so it is very tight, cutting off the blood supply to the skin tag. Finish your DIY dermatological procedure by trimming the ends of the threads with a disinfected pair of scissors, so the string doesn't catch on anything.
Patience is key! Once you've tied the string, do not touch the skin tag except to dab it with a bit of alcohol. After a few days to a week, the tiny tumor should fall off on its own. When this happens, be sure to nourish the small wound with a bit of antibacterial ointment, keeping it covered with a bandage until the area has healed — that way you won't leave a scar.
The doctor is particularly against most of the over-the-counter medications available for removing skin tags. When people apply these caustic formulas at home, many get more of the product on the surrounding area than the actual tumor itself, which can lead to blistering and scarring.
A skin tag is harmless and practically invisible to others, so if you don't think you can remove it safely, don't risk it. In the end, you could make a blemish more noticeable (and painful!) than that tiny little bump.

Make These 3 Changes, Burn More Calories
Exercise is essential when it comes to dropping pounds. So if you're eager to lose the weight, then here are three everyday changes that will help increase your calorie burn.
Hello Sunshine
Moving workouts to early mornings may mean cursing your alarm clock, but here's the big payoff: morning exercisers burn more calories. And now that the sun rises earlier, it'll be easier to pull yourself out of bed than it was in the Winter. Research shows that people who exercise in the a.m. work harder and for longer periods of time, which may be because they're more alert and energetic and they don't feel as rushed as afternoon or evening exercisers. Getting into a morning routine will also help you stick with it, which will help even more with your weight-loss journey.
Get Speedy
When it comes to cardio, running will help you lose more weight than walking since it burns more calories, but if you increase your speed just a little, then you'll burn even more. And don't stick to a consistent pace the entire workout. Adding sprinting intervals is an effective way to increase your calorie burn and has also been proven to reduce belly fat. Also be sure to swing those arms as you move, and you'll burn 15 percent more calories.
Strength Train in the Ladies' Room
Muscle burns more calories than fat does, so the more muscle mass you have, the better it is for weight loss. Don't just hit the weight room at the gym. Include strength-training moves throughout your day, such as push-ups on the bathroom counter and this two-minute butt and thigh workout while brushing your teeth. You can also work your body by carrying a basket instead of pushing a cart, using the stairs whenever possible, and sitting on an exercise ball instead of a chair.

The Lower-Body Exercise to Lift Your Butt and Tone Your Thighs
This move is tough, but let me tell you, it is so worth the sweat and struggle. A set of surrenders strengthens your legs, tones your butt, and works your core. It also keeps your heart rate up as you go from kneeling to standing over and over again. You guys! Changing levels takes a lot of effort.
Before attempting this move, find some padding for your knees. I like to fold my yoga mat in half to double the cushion.
- Stand with your hands behind your head with your elbows wide, and bring your right knee gently to the ground.
- Bring your left knee down so you are kneeling. Keep your chest up and squeeze your glutes to keep yourself stable.
- Lift your right foot up and place it in front of you. Bring the left foot forward to stand up, pressing through your right heel.
- This completes one rep. Start the next by bringing your left knee to the floor.
- Do two to three sets of 12 reps each.

The Fashion-Based Theory From The Walking Dead That No One Is Talking About
We'll have to wait until October for The Walking Dead to return, but that won't stop us from trying to solve every mystery from the show - including ones we discover all on our own, after hours of binge-watching the suspenseful series. For instance: have you noticed that the majority of female walkers roam around in maxi dresses? What's the deal there? Was there a shortage of pants before this virus spread, forcing them to rock the next-best comfy staple? We really need to know!
In reality, it's probably easier for the costume department to rip up and "walker-fy" a single piece rather than a full outfit. But we'll still hold out hope that one day, our question will be explained. Until then, take a look at the maxis taking over this apocalyptic world. Then see what life was like before walkers were everywhere.

This Optical Illusion of a Woman's Shiny Legs Will Make You Question Your Eyesight
are these legs shiny and oily or are they legs with white paint on them http://pic.twitter.com/RzLl3oaD59
— Common White Girl (@girlposts) October 26, 2016
The internet is back at it again with another viral photo that has everyone stumped. Instagram user leonardhoespams shared a photo of her legs on Monday and immediately had many people doing a double take. At first glance, you probably see a pair of shiny legs, but take a closer look and you will notice her legs are actually not glossed over at all.
Twitter users pointed out the optical illusion, taking note of the lines of paint across her legs. Check out what they had to say:
This is the next 'Blue/Gold Dress' 😨
