Even at a Baseball Game, Chris Christie Can't Escape His Unpopularity
Chris Christie excitedly caught a foul ball at a recent New York Mets game at Citi Field on July 18, but as he stood up to high-five those around him, a resounding boo emerged from the stadium. The New Jersey governor did not appear to react to the hostile response.
During the uncomfortable moment, Fox Sports Midwest's Dan McLaughlin said, "A souvenir for Chris Christie, are you kidding me?" The broadcaster then couldn't help but take a jab at Christie's now-infamous decision to close the beach on the weekend of Fourth of July only to pay a private visit the deserted shore with his own family: "Nice to see him get from the beach down to the ballpark."
The governor faced quite a bit of criticism for actions which led to a government shutdown leading up to the Fourth of July. It all started when Christie vetoed a budget because it did not include funding for public health initiatives. The veto led to an impasse between Christie and the State Assembly. The government consequently shut down and state-run parks, beaches, and public spaces were forced to close.
Even before the shutdown, a June poll had already showed Christie's approval rating at a dismal 15 percent, so it's hard to imagine the booing came as too much of a surprise to the embattled politician.
