We Need to Talk About Neill Blomkamp's Insane, Experimental Short Films

Neill Blomkamp really put himself on the map with District 9. The intense, futuristic sci-fi thriller wowed audiences and presented a social commentary on politics and race relations. And while his follow-ups - the Matt Damon adventure Elysium and 2015's Chappie starring Hugh Jackman - didn't fare as well, the director is finding other avenues to get his work out to the world. This year, Blomkamp has been quietly dropping "experimental short films" under the umbrella of a new production company called Oats Studios.

These films are so unreal and captivating because of the high-concept terror, the seamless and impressive special effects, and the entrancing stories. It's hard not to get sucked in. There have been two longer, more fleshed-out shorts so far. Rakka shows a world overrun by the alien race where humans are slaves on the verge of extinction. At the end of June, Oats dropped Firebase, which depicts an unsettling and mysterious event that occurs in the trenches of Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

It seems the studio is showing no signs of slowing down. Another short film dropped on July 6, and a disturbing teaser for a short called Zygote promises a July 12 release. With so many mini releases, we can't help but wonder if Blomkamp is working on a stellar feature-length release. And, well, if he's got anything like Firebase's skull-adorned "Rivergod" up his sleeve, we're in for a surreal and mind-melting nightmare (in the best way).
