How the Guggenheim Museum Expertly Trolled Trump With a Solid Gold Toilet

It's common for sitting presidents to request widely recognized and precious artwork to decorate the White House. So, following Donald Trump's inauguration, a representative reached out to the Guggenheim Museum on the president's behalf to request Vincent van Gogh's "Landscape With Snow." Curator Nancy Spector had a better idea.

According to The Washington Post, Spector responded to the White House's request back in September and said the museum would not be able to loan the fairly famous painting as it is largely prohibited from travel. The curator instead offered "America" - a solid gold toilet by Maurizio Cattelan that actually serves as a functioning toilet for visitors of the Guggenheim. The toilet had already been on display for a year, its exhibit had ended, and thus it was available on loan.

In the email response obtained by The Washington Post, Spector described the piece and wrote, "It is a solid, 18k gold toilet that was installed in one of our public restrooms for all to use in a wonderful act of generosity." She added, "We would be pleased to help facilitate this loan for the artist should the president and first lady have any interest in installing it in the White House."

Shockingly, Spector never heard back and the White House did not take her up on her offer.
