This Teacher Got Lucky Charms Marshmallows From a Student For 1 Bittersweet Reason

Rachel Uretsky-Pratt, a third grade teacher at Amistad Elementary in Kennewick, WA, is used to getting a few gifts each year from her students' parents. But recently, Rachel was reminded about the true meaning of Christmas when one of her students gave her a bag of marshmallows from Lucky Charms cereal. She explained why the present was so meaningful in a now-viral Facebook post.

"Today was the last day before our winter break. We will have two weeks off to rest with our families and loved ones over the holidays then head back to school in 2019," she wrote. "With it being the day before break and Christmas right around the corner, most teachers bring their kiddos something such as books or little treats and occasionally in return receive something from their students."

"Be grateful for what you have, and what others give you. It all truly comes from the deepest parts of their hearts."

Although she received some chocolates, handmade notes, and jewelry from other kids in the class, it was the bag of marshmallows that "stood out the most" to Rachel. "You see, 100 percent of my school is on free/reduced lunch," she explained. "They also get free breakfast at school every day of the school week. This kiddo wanted to get my [sic] something so badly, but had nothing to give."

Instead of walking into her classroom empty-handed, the student in question got a little creative in the gift-giving department. "This student opened up her free breakfast cereal this morning, took the packaging of her spork, straw, and napkin, and finally took the time to take every marshmallow out of her cereal to put in a bag - for me."

The thoughtful gesture reminded Rachel about the importance of appreciating what you have during the holiday season. "Be grateful for what you have, and what others give you. It all truly comes from the deepest parts of their hearts." In an update to the original post, she added that, "My wish for all of you is to remember this kind and simple gesture of love from one of my school babies and carry it with you and continue to spread love and kindness to everyone you meet - not just during this holiday season."
