Jude Law Is Supposedly Playing Mar-Vell in Captain Marvel - Here's Why He's So Important
With Marvel's latest edition of the Captain Marvel trailer, there are a lot of questions about the people associated with Carol Danvers and her group of "noble warrior heroes." The new footage gives small glimpses of the other Kree members who make up Danvers' task force, but the one who has everyone's interest particularly piqued is the original Captain Marvel, known as Mar-Vell.
In the comics, Mar-Vell is a captain in the Kree Space Fleet (the Starforce in the film) who is known for his numerous victories against the Skrull for the Kree Empire. He is sent to observe Earth along with his commanding officer, Colonel Yon-Rogg, and adopts the identity of recently deceased scientist Dr. Walter Lawson. While on Earth, Mar-Vell keeps an eye on Earth's progress toward developing means of space travel and meets Carol Danvers, a NASA security officer. The two grow close over time, becoming friends and even developing feelings of love. Yon-Rogg, jealous of Mar-Vell's other relationship with a Kree nurse named Una, decides to kill the Captain by activating a Kree Sentry to attack him. Mar-Vell defeats the Sentry and saves the people on Earth, who begin calling him Captain Marvel.
Fast-forward in time and Mar-Vell is saving Earthlings much more frequently. His affection for humans has grown so much that he's deliberately sabotaging orders from Yon-Rogg and other higher-ups that could harm the people of Earth. When his disobedience is discovered, he's accused of treason against the Kree Empire and sentenced to death. He escapes the firing squad and winds up combating the efforts to overthrow the Kree government by Ronan the Accuser and Commander Zarek.
It's during his many attempts to subdue Ronan and Zarek that Yon-Rogg kidnaps Danvers to provoke Mar-Vell. Their subsequent battle causes the explosion of a Kree device known as the Psyche-Magnitron, which rewrites the DNA of the captured Danvers and makes her a human-Kree hybrid. Yon-Rogg is killed in the explosion, Danvers joins Starforce as Ms. Marvel, and later becomes known as Captain Marvel.
We're not 100 percent sure how Mar-Vell's relationship with Danvers will be portrayed in Captain Marvel since it isn't the usual Marvel origin story. Instead of covering the events leading up to Danvers getting her abilities, we'll be meeting her well after - so we probably won't be exploring Mar-Vell's hand in that too thoroughly. Jude Law is supposedly portraying Mar-Vell in the film, and we've definitely seen him outfitted as a member of the Starforce, so that checks out! We're just excited to see where Law takes the character when Captain Marvel premieres on March 8, 2019.
