Don't Go Hiking Before You Download These Apps
Sure, a canteen and sturdy walking books are some of the basics any mountaineer takes with them hiking, but there's a lot more you can bring with you to ensure that your adventure goes off without a hitch. From stargazing tools that practically illuminate the night sky to weather applications that will help you avoid getting drenched, we found seven apps you should load up before you adventure out. The best part is that you don't have to carry anything extra.
- AllTrails (iOS, free; Android, free): If you're in discovery mode, this tool helps you explore over 50,000 trails and even learn from other hikers about looming obstacles you might encounter, like fallen trees.
- MyNature Tree Guide (iOS, $2): Impress your friends when you're able to identify over 200 different types of trees along the way.
- MapMyHike (iOS, free; Android, free): If fitness is your goal, this will deliver all the info you want, such as distance covered, calories burned, and average pace.
- Star Walk (iOS, $3, Android, $3): You have escaped the city hustle and are now deep in the outdoors. Take a moment to enjoy your surroundings. Look up into the sky - it's time to start stargazing. Just point your phone toward the sky, and the app will tell you what you're looking at.
- Camp Finder (iOS, $4; Android, $3): In too deep and want to find out where you can pitch a tent? Search for RV grounds and campsites and get access to user reviews while you're on the go.
- Dark Sky (iOS, $4): Get minute-to-minute weather predictions so you can avoid getting caught in a storm.
- GPS Coleman Campfire Stories (iOS, free): Gather everyone around the crackling fire and read silly (albeit scary) stories before bedtime.

The Latest Trend in Nail Art Totally Rocks
After years of keeping up with nail art trends, we've started to get a little weary of wearing them on our own talons. Sure, pom-pom nails are adorable, but they don't appear to be highly functional. We're completely charmed by glass manicures, but inevitably, we fail to use enough topcoat, and the little shards of iridescent material snag on our tights.
We had all but resigned ourselves to basic fingertips when we spotted the latest trend: marble nails (also known as stone nails). Not to be confused with the water marbling nail art technique, this look combines shades like white, gray, and black to create a "cracked" or swirled design similar to polished marble tiles. The result is subtly stunning but completely classy. See for yourself when you read on!

We Just Super Liked the Tinder CEO's Bachelor Pad
The cofounder and CEO of Tinder, Sean Rad, just listed his two-bedroom, three-bathroom Los Angeles condo, and to state the obvious pun: we're swiping right - we might even super like it. The 2,298-square-foot apartment is more sophisticated than the average bachelor pad. We're loving the emphasis on earth tones, clean lines, and modern elegance. The open-plan living room and stunning windows breathe freshness into the apartment. We'd venture a guess that Sean's favorite room is the bathroom, since his massive bathtub has a longing for a spa day - or romantic soak for two.
The buyer will be conveniently located to several hot neighborhoods of Tinder users, as the apartment sits at the intersection of Westwood, Holmby Hills, Century City, and Beverly Hills. You can snag Rad's condo for $1.795 million - the top-floor views of Los Angeles, walk-in closet, and abundance of natural light are well worth the steep price tag. As for Rad's new abode, he's said to have upgraded to a $7.5 million penthouse down the road in the same celeb-filled building where Yolanda Foster just moved.
The Macbook Selfie Stick Is the Tech Trend We Definitely Don't Need
Need further proof that the whole selfie stick trend is going way too far? Meet the Macbook selfie stick.
Artists Moises Sanabria, John Yuyi, and Tom Galle recently constructed a selfie stick fit for an actual Macbook. Hypothetically, the stick allows you to take selfies using the laptop's Photobooth app. This also isn't the first time this group of artists are making headlines: Sanabria and Galle both belong to ART404, the artist collective responsible for that incredible Netflix and Chill Airbnb listing.
While we certainly chuckle at the thought of people, namely tourists, walking around with cumbersome Macbook selfie sticks, we're kind of relieved to know that this isn't an actual product on the market . . . yet.

You Have to Read an Engineer's Note About Why Women Aren't His Equals
When it comes to being a woman in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM), it's almost guaranteed that the journey will be a difficult one. Women often face sexism or sexual harassment and feel a need to prove their abilities, while men don't usually receive the same type of treatment. One male mechanical engineering student decided to stand up for women in an exceptionally amazing letter to the editor at Eastern Washington University.
Jared Mauldin, a senior in mechanical engineering, wrote a short note that has recently gone viral - it gives an overview of the advantages he has as a student in STEM vs. his female classmates and friends. Read it here.
Here it is!The EasternerEastern Washington University newspaper 9-30-2015
Posted by Jared Mauldin on Thursday, October 1, 2015
In a Facebook post, Mauldin wrote that he felt moved to write the letter because of how he sees men act toward women, including several instances with his friend Holly. "When Holly and I started Calculus 1, I quickly realized that while I was good at math, she was better; a lot better," he wrote. ". . . If [men] did partner with her, they were hyper-critical, they talked over her, they talked directly to me and barely acknowledged she was there. If Holly disagreed on an answer, instead of looking at both answers to find out who had done something wrong, as was common when I worked with other men, I saw them jump to the conclusion that she must be wrong."
The photo of his letter has received considerable attention, especially on the Facebook page of Mighty Girl, where it has more than 70,000 "likes," 48,000 shares, and 2,000 comments.
Mauldin hopes his letter encourages more men to speak up. "Maybe by standing up and breaking the silence from the male side, I can help some more men begin to see the issues, and begin to listen to the women who have been speaking about this all along," he wrote. He's right - his letter definitely helps bring to light the issues that women face in these fields.

8 Stylish Home Pieces to Snag in March
At long last, Spring is on the horizon, and our homes are ready to come out of hibernation. Here are eight on-trend products that will give your living space the stylish refresh it's craving.
If You Have a Deep Complexion, You Need to Download This Swatch App
With every new lipstick color or makeup palette reveal, there's one question that every woman has on her mind: "how will this shade look on me?" It's not uncommon for a brand to only use one skin tone to showcase the hues of beauty products, and more often than not, those with medium to deep complexions are left out of the picture completely.
A beauty blogger noticed this lack of color representation in the industry and set out to change the game. Ofunne Amaka said she noticed a lot of the makeup products are often swatched by influencers with lighter skin tones, so to mix things up, she created an Instagram account, Cocoa Swatches, that crowdsources makeup swatches from those with dark skin tones.
"When I started the Instagram page, I just wanted to see makeup products swatches on someone who looked like me," she said.
This idea eventually led her to conceive an app of the same name, where users can easily see curated swatch contents featuring women of color. Once we downloaded the free app, we not only noticed how beautiful the images were but also how Ofunne has created a community where ladies of various complexions can come together to share their stories and love of makeup. Read on to see how some of your cult favorites look on a variety of skin tones, then learn more about the importance of diversity in the beauty industry.

7 Secrets Real Estate Agents Know About Bathroom Renovations
Bathrooms are often a top priority for a home renovation, and with good reason. According to Brown Harris Stevens real estate agent Katharine Tuckerman, when it comes time to resell, a "bathroom can make or break a deal." In an older building especially, a new bathroom can be a sign of the property's overall condition and is "a load off for buyers psychologically." Conversely, she explains, "a bathroom that needs renovation tells a buyer that perhaps the plumbing needs updating as well," and may trigger money-pit anxiety. Katharine shares her tips for a bathroom renovation that will see a resale return and might even prompt a bidding war!

This Woman Swatched 97 Different Lipsticks So You Don't Have To
Beauty aficionados know a good lipstick swatch when they see one. So when we spotted a Reddit user who tried on 97 different lip colors and took photos of each shade to share with the world, we were completely enamored by this woman. Reddit user Itselyse not only tested out a variety of colors but also different brands, from drugstore favorites like Rimmel London and Maybelline to cult classics like MAC and Nars.
What's even more impressive is that she tried on all the colors in one day and shared some beauty advice on how to keep her lips from getting too stained by the lipsticks. "I used baby wipes in between each swatch to take off most of it," she wrote. "And with the liquid lipsticks and more long wearing products, I used olive oil to break them down."
Though we could see how it'd be hard to pick a favorite, Itselyse revealed that Rimmel was her top drugstore brand for lip products. Her all-time-favorite formula is the Nars Audacious lipstick.
Though this swatch chart may not be representative of how the colors will look on all complexions, it's still pretty cool to see all the shades on an actual pair of lips - and a handy shopping guide for fair, neutral-undertone-complected women like Itselyse. Who knows? Maybe one of the 97 lip colors ahead is your new signature shade.

Badass Ruby Rose Is the Newest Face of Urban Decay
In case you hadn't heard, cult beauty brand Urban Decay is celebrating the big 2-0 this year. In honor of this huge milestone, the company seems to be pulling out all the stops. Just a few days after releasing a blockbuster vault of shadows and eyeliners, Urban Decay has announced that it has signed a new celebrity as the face of the brand: Ruby Rose.
As a diehard fan of both Urban Decay and No Doubt, I loved that Gwen Stefani collaborated with the brand to create new shades and products. But the Orange Is the New Black star truly seems like the perfect fit for Urban Decay. The company motto is "beauty with an edge," and Ruby personifies that slogan. She's both sexy and cute with a bit of grit thanks to all of her incredible tattoos. She's also obsessed with animals, and Urban Decay is committed to being cruelty-free.
"Urban Decay believes in supporting individuality and personal self-expression - two values I hold very dear - because everyone deserves the freedom to explore their personality and discover their true selves," Ruby said in a statement.
While the brand has yet to release any details on her partnership (her position is called "Most Addictive New Vice"), we can't wait to see what comes from it. Here's hoping we get some ultralongwear liquid liner, maybe inspired by Ruby's tattoos, and some funky new polish shades.
Google Maps Users, This Pit Stop Feature Is a Game Changer
Whether you're on a road trip or running an errand, sometimes you need to make a pit stop along the way to your destination. The newest update to Google Maps on iOS finally lets you add additional stops without removing you from navigation mode.
The update, which starts to roll out to users today, is simple to use. Just tap on the magnifying glass at the right-hand corner of Google Maps. A set of options will appear, like grocery stores and coffee shops. You can either choose these or tap the search button to write in exactly what you're looking for. You'll then see what you searched for appear on the map, along with ratings and just how long this detour will take. Then, tap "add stop" and your route should update. An example of how this works is below.
Already available on Android since October, this new iOS feature should help you out immensely. And if you're traveling with multiple people to the same place, you can always share your location with them.

17 People Who Emoji Better Than You
Reason 3,937 we love emoji: they tell a story. Whether that's a story about what's wrong with your life or a story about how you danced your butt off last night, those little symbols capture so much significance.
But if you thought you were good at using emoji to tell your story, think again. Once you see these 17 examples of perfect emoji use, you'll realize your emoji game is pre-tty weak. It's OK though because you can just copy them.

The Ultimate Guide to Spring Dresses Perfect For Easter Sunday

19 Times Game of Thrones's Khal Drogo Made You Happy to Be Alive
If you watch Game of Thrones, you know that in addition all of the gore, dragons, and incest, the show is basically a nonstop hour of extremely delicious eye candy. Case in point: Khal Drogo, played by the Patron Saint of Tiny Shirts, Jason Momoa. As the fearsome, totally ripped Dothraki warrior whom Daenerys Targaryen is married off to in the first season, Drogo is the ultimate manly man, and although there are certainly some downsides to his gruff behavior, you can't deny that he's the buffest dude in all of Westeros. 1 Move to Prevent Runner's Knee - Try It Today
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Kat Borchart
It's no secret that running can be really, really hard on your knees. Those who love running (myself included) can often overlook knee pain or simply try to ignore it. Proper recovery is important, but did you know there are exercises - butt-based exercises - you can do to prevent runner's knee?
I recently took the Best Butt Ever class at Equinox, where I met the bubbly, ridiculously enthusiastic, supersmart Caroline Jordan - one of San Francisco's sweetest and most popular trainers. Caroline taught me that booty workouts are for way more than aesthetics; strong glutes are actually so important for the health of your back, legs, and knees and can even prevent running injuries. "A strong butt is a runner's strongest asset," said Jordan. "Running is generally a linear forward movement, which can lead to weaknesses in other planes of motion."
And that is where working the gluteus medius - located on the sides of the pelvis - comes into play. It helps stabilize the pelvis by preventing too much swaying side to side, which not only makes you a more efficient runner, but also takes excess pressure off the hip and knee joints. Jordan recommends strengthening this part of your butt with the lateral squat walk with a resistance band, emphasizing that "through cross training and building powerful gluteal muscles, you run fast and injury-free."
All you need is a resistance band, some space to move, and a few minutes - you'll be on your way to a healthier, happier, more comfortable run.

- Place a resistance band around your ankles. Start with a lighter band and work your way up to a heavier band.
- Begin standing with feet directly underneath your hips and your hands on your hips.
- Squat halfway down and sidestep to the right, leading with your heel to make the glute muscles engage as far as you can manage without allowing your knees to rotate toward each other. Bring the left leg toward the right with enough space to keep some resistance in the band. Concentrate on keeping your pelvis level as you move sideways.
- Step to the right 10 times, then reverse, stepping to the left 10 times. Repeat for three sets.
After completing the exercises, be sure to stretch your glute muscles or roll out your IT bands using a foam roller.

Who Is Slender Man, and What Does He Have to Do With American Horror Story?
If you've been sifting through all the details of American Horror Story's sixth season, chances are you've heard about the possible involvement of a figure known as Slender Man. Back in January, Us Weekly reported that the next installment after Hotel - the show's fifth season - would revolve around the horrifying creature. This, of course, begs the question: who is Slender Man, and where the hell did he come from? As it turns out, the creature came forth from the darkest depths of the Internet years ago, quickly becoming a viral sensation. Keep reading to see everything we could uncover about the monster, then check out our own theories for AHS's next season.
- He was created for a Photoshop contest on an Internet forum. Slender Man first appeared in a Photoshop contest on the Something Awful forum. A user named Victor Surge digitally altered and uploaded two black-and-white images featuring disturbing captions that alluded to the existence and power of the creature.
- He's since inspired tons of Internet horror fiction. Numerous Slender Man stories have popped up in the time since his first appearance. A popular horror fiction community called CreepyPasta has so many, in fact, that they've created a tag page for him.
- He's been linked to mythological creatures in other foreign cultures. People have connected Slender Man to mythological creatures in a handful of other cultures. There's "Der Großman" (The Tall Man) in Germany, another "Tall Man" in Romanian mythology, and a "Tree Man" in English mythology. While no concrete connections have been made, all of the creatures share strikingly similar characteristics.
- He was at the center of a grisly attack in 2014. In Wisconsin, two 12-year-old girls stabbed their friend - also a 12 year old - nearly to death. The girls allegedly claimed that they were trying to please Slender Man, hoping that the attack would make them his "proxies."
- There are various video games centered around him. One of the first video games to tackle the legend is called Slender, and it looks positively terrifying. Plenty of other games for computers, smartphones, and more have popped up since.
- An episode of Supernatural is inspired by him. In an episode called #thinman, Sam and Dean Winchester go to investigate a murder, only to come face to face with amateur paranormal investigators, "The Ghostfacers." In the Supernatural universe, the "Thin Man" isn't actually real - two of the town's inhabitants are posing as the figure to cover up their crimes.
- He might appear in the sixth season of American Horror Story. While Us Weekly reported that season six of American Horror Story would feature the ghastly creature, another source close to the project claimed that the rumors are "not true." Looks like we'll have to wait and see to really know for sure.

How Having a (Much) Younger Sibling Changed My Life
When we were kids, my little sister Madison and I were the M&Ms - my parents' duo of daughters. We were the only kids among friends and family since my parents got married and had the two of us before age 30. As sisters we received a lot of attention, and we liked it that way. So it was quite a surprise when my mom and dad sat us down to let us know that baby number three was on the way; I was 10 years old. To say the least, my sister and I were a little perplexed at the thought of some new baby coming to town and turning our world upside down. Little did I know that this new baby would change my life forever.
As soon as my brother Mac was born, he completely stole my heart. Even at almost 11 years old, I created a bond with this tiny little baby that most people don't get to experience until they are much older. It's been almost 12 years since Mac was born, so I've learned a few things from having a young brother. Here's my case for spread-out siblings:
- You learn about responsibility early on. Having an infant in your life means watching your parents endlessly change diapers, make bottles, and wipe spit-up. Every once in awhile, I was allowed to do those things (under parental supervision), and I learned just how important it was to take care of this little life before I even hit middle school. Needless to say, I was an excellent babysitter.
- You watch a child grow up. I remember the first time Mac crawled, walked, and said my name. I remember how excited my family was when we discovered how fast of a reader he was in kindergarten. I'll never forget telling him bedtime stories before he went to sleep at night, and I especially won't forget when he told me about his first "girlfriend" last year when he started middle school. I'm watching this kid grow up into a man - well, more like a prepubescent tween - but you get the picture. It's cool to think about the entirety of his life and how far he has come. I have been able to experience that.
- You stay in the know. Most 20-somethings don't know what the heck Minecraft is. I didn't, either, until my hip, tech-savvy brother told me about the video game. And that's not the first thing he's told me about. I work in a trend-driven editorial environment, and my brother still manages to find out things before me. Good thing he has no problem telling me that I actually don't know about anything cool at all.
- You teach your sibling life lessons. From a young age, my brother watched my sister and me overcome personal challenges, go to high school, and, worst of all, get our hearts broken. Nothing makes Mac more upset than a mean guy who hurts a girl's feelings. We joke that Mac is going to be the best husband ever when he grows up, but he really will be. Watching his sisters go through life's tribulations has taught him how he should act when he gets older.
- You create an incredible bond. I have no shame in telling people that one of my best friends is an 11-year-old boy. Now that I don't live with my family anymore, I feel this incredible guilt if I go too long without seeing my siblings. When the three of us are together, it's pretty much the best time ever. Even though Mac and I are aged so far apart, we have this assurance of trust and understanding between us. He looks up to me and knows he can tell me everything; I look to him for comic relief and a really good hug when I arrive back home.
So if that doesn't convince you that siblings with big age gaps are a good thing, I don't know what will. All I can say is that my family wouldn't be the same without Mac. In fact, our family without him is unimaginable. So thanks, Mom and Dad, for turning the M&Ms into the Three Musketeers.
