Victor Verdugo: "When My Parents Came to the US, They Gave Me the Opportunity to Have a Voice"
Victor Verdugo is an editorial assistant at POPSUGAR.
My parents came to the US from Sinaloa, Mexico, with no knowledge of the English language or American culture. They didn't know that their broken English would come to alienate them from those that couldn't hear past their thick accent. They wouldn't understand why they were treated rudely when they couldn't communicate with the cashier at the grocery store.
Despite the fact that my parents only spoke Spanish at home, I taught myself to speak English by the age of 4 using cartoon characters as my guides. As soon as my parents discovered my communication skills, they carried me everywhere. I was dragged to doctor's appointments, presented to inquisitive strangers on the street, and lifted onto the counter of every fast-food restaurant.
Being so young, I felt happy and important to have such a big role in my family's day-to-day survival. Yet, the older I got, the more I started to resent my responsibilities. I grew tired of having to translate every letter that came in the mail, struggling to understand complicated jargon. I became frustrated every time I had to run errands with my parents so that I could help them maneuver through basic interactions.
I soon distanced myself from my first language, choosing to pronounce common Spanish words the American way, and only speaking it within the walls of my house. But in reality, I underestimated the strength that came from knowing Spanish. It was the language of my parents, who worked endlessly to make sure that my brother and I had everything we wanted. It was a language that went along with every essence of my being, carrying the history of my people.
It wasn't until after I graduated high school that I began to appreciate my Latin culture and the beauty of the Spanish language. I soon made friends from all over Latin America, like Colombia and the Dominican Republic, and began to speak Spanish beyond just with my family. I embraced the traditions that my parents held close to them for so many years and found guidance in the sayings that they raised me with.
My Latino identity is deeply rooted in the fact that I was raised in a bilingual and bicultural home. When my parents came to the US, they gave me the opportunity to have a voice. They gifted me the confidence to speak in a tone where I would command attention. They accepted their accents so that I could speak without one.
You'll Want to Zoom In to Get a Better Look at Kim Kardashian's Makeup-Free Face
Even Kim Kardashian needs a break from wearing makeup once in awhile. The star chose to do just that during Paris Fashion Week when she showed up to the Spring 2017 Balenciaga show with a fresh face. Kim teased her makeup-free look on Twitter, writing, "Balenciaga. No makeup today." and happened to look perfectly flawless.
When we zoomed in a little closer on Kim's nude face, we realized the trick to achieving her natural glow was a little bit of eye and lip gloss. The way the gloss caught the light made the formulas function like a pigment-free, natural-looking highlighter.
As for why she chose this moment to go bare, perhaps Kim was feeling her good skin day. It's also possible that she, like Alicia Keys, wanted to make a statement that you don't need makeup to feel confident.
Regardless of the reasoning, Kim has inspired us to rethink our beauty routine. If she can sit front row at a fashion show with barely any product on, we can give up products for a day too. And, if you follow Kim's skin care regimen, you may never need makeup at all. Read on to get a closer look at Kim's face from all angles.

Everything That Has Happened Since Angelina Jolie Filed For Divorce From Brad Pitt
Image Source: Getty / Target Presse Agentur Gmbh
Fans were thrown for a loop when news broke on Sept. 20 that Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt after 11 years of being together. Although the By the Sea actress has yet to personally speak out on the matter, her attorney, Robert Offer, said her decision to split was "for the health of the family." Brad released a statement of his own not long after, telling People, "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids." While it's still unclear what led to their shocking breakup, keep reading to get all caught up on everything that has unfolded since then.
- Angelina files for divorce from Brad. The actress filed papers to end their marriage on Sept. 19, citing irreconcilable differences and requesting sole physical custody of their six children, Maddox, Pax, Shiloh, Zahara, and twins Vivienne and Knox. She also asked the judge to grant Brad visitation rights.
- Angelina's attorney, Robert Offer, releases a statement on her behalf. After their divorce news grabbed headlines on Sept. 20, Angelina's attorney said her decision to divorce was made "for the health of the family," but did not answer any further questions.
- Brad releases a statement. The actor spoke out about the split in a statement to People that same day, making it clear that he's putting their kids first. "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time," he said.
- More details about their divorce surface. In an exclusive report from Us Weekly, a source close to the pair revealed that "they fought a lot over the years and disagreed about many things. . . . The fighting got worse and they disagreed a lot about parenting." The insider also noted that they would also "fight over their schedules and politics."
- Angelina's manager, Geyer Kosinski, releases another statement on her behalf. Later that Tuesday, Angelina's manager told E! News, "Angelina will always do what's in the best interest of taking care of her family. She appreciates everyone's understanding of their need for privacy at this time."
- Celebrities react to Brad and Angelina's shocking split. Once the news broke on Sept. 20, it didn't take very long for GIFs and memes to flood the internet. Stars also quickly chimed in, and Chrissy Teigen tweeted, "Brad and Angelina. How am I supposed to go to work today?" Meanwhile, their friend George Clooney found out about the breakup while attending the Leaders Summit For Refugees at the United Nations. During an interview with CNN, a reporter asked him to comment on their split, to which he shockingly responded, "What happened? . . . I didn't know that. I feel very sorry then. That's a sad story and unfortunate for a family. It's an unfortunate story about a family. I feel very sorry to hear that." Adele also dedicated her NYC concert to the couple, telling the audience, "I need to address to elephant in the room . . . But it's the end of an era." More recently, Courteney Cox said the divorce is "not about" Jennifer Aniston, and Jen's husband Justin Theroux made a similar comment about the her inclusion being "nonsense." Melissa Etheridge also chimed in, calling Angelina "nasty," and saying that the allegations of child abuse against Brad were "completely unfounded."
- The New York Post releases a cover featuring a laughing Jennifer Aniston. On Sept. 21, people were furious when The New York Post released its Brad and Angelina split cover, showing a massive photo of Jennifer laughing hysterically. Not long after, Jennifer's pal, Chelsea Handler, spoke out about the breakup, saying, "Brad and Angelina always said they wouldn't get married until everyone could get married and I always said I wouldn't get married until they got divorced, so I'm officially accepting proposals. I'm ready." She then continued, "There are rumors that part of the problem was that Brad was allegedly drinking and smoking too much weed. I wonder why he would need to self-medicate? Maybe because he could have been spending the last 12 years at Lake Como hanging out with George Clooney and Matt Damon instead of being stuck in a house with 85 kids, speaking 15 different languages. Oh yeah, and because he married a f*cking lunatic, that's why."
- Marion Cotillard breaks her silence on Brad and Angelina's split. On Sept. 21, Marion took to Instagram to announce her pregnancy with longtime partner Guillaume Canet and shut down rumors that she had an affair with Brad in a lengthy post. "This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept up into," she wrote, adding, "Firstly, many years ago, I met the man of my life, father of our son and of the baby we are expecting. He is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need . . . And to all the media and the haters who are quick to pass judgment, I sincerely wish you a swift recovery. Finally, I do very much wish that Angelina and Brad, both of whom I deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment."
- Brad is investigated for child abuse. On Sept. 22, People magazine reported that the actor was under investigation for child abuse by the Los Angeles Police Department and LA County Department of Children and Family Services after someone anonymously reported that he got "verbally abusive" and "physical" with one of his six children. The incident allegedly occurred on Sept. 14 on his and Angelina's private plane, where the rest of the kids, as well as Angelina, were also present. The report also suggests that he had been drinking at the time of the incident. Not long after the news broke, the LAPD denied the report with the statement: "We have no criminal investigation that we are actively pursuing. To my knowledge, [Pitt talking to police] never happened. And right now, that is where our office is. We are not investigating any case, nor do we have any allegations against Mr. Pitt. We understand how rumors get spun up and hopefully we can put a few of them to rest. We have no investigation involving Mr. Pitt." People later clarified that the DCFS is still investigating Brad for child abuse, but the LAPD has not been involved. TMZ has also further reported that the child abuse allegations have been transferred to the FBI.
- Brad gets a lawyer. On Sept. 22, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the actor enlisted help from Lance Spiegel, a family law attorney from Beverly Hills, for his upcoming divorce.
- The FBI releases an official statement. On Sept. 22, the FBI responded to Brad's child abuse investigation in a statement to Us Weekly saying, "In response to your inquiry regarding allegations within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States; specifically, an aircraft carrying Mr. Brad Pitt and his children, the FBI is continuing to gather facts and will evaluate whether an investigation at the federal level will be pursued."
- Brad Pitt backs out of an event and releases another statement. On Sept. 27, Brad revealed he wouldn't be attending a previously planned screening of Terrence Howard's Voyage of Time. "I'm currently focused on my family situation and don't want to distract attention away from this extraordinary film," he said.
- Brad offers to take a drug test. In an effort to prove he has nothing to hide, Brad agreed to a drug test, according to a report from Us Weekly on Sept. 28. A legal source confirmed that the test would not not be conducted against Brad's will, stating, "The DCFS [Department of Community & Family Services] wouldn't compel someone to provide the urine sample for the drug test; it would be voluntary."
- Angelina hires the real-life Olivia Pope for her divorce. On Sept. 29, People confirmed that the actress hired famous crisis manager Judy Smith, who inspired Kerry Washington's character in Scandal, to help with her divorce. "Judy has been asked to consult with those working with Angelina on divorce negotiations," a source told the magazine. "Judy and her firm have a long history of handling issues that have unfortunately garnered too much attention in the public eye, and she knows how to push towards resolutions that are swift and discreet."
- Brad and Angelina reach a temporary custody agreement. On Sept. 30, it was revealed that the former couple reached a temporary custody agreement, which will be in effect for three weeks before the LA County Department of Children and Family Services will draw up another arrangement or turn the jurisdiction over to the court. The agreement states that Angelina will get full physical custody of their children and Brad will have visitation rights, although hist first visit will be monitored by a therapist, who will determine if he is allowed to then have unsupervised time with the kids. Angelina and Brad also have to attend individual counseling as well as family counseling with the kids, and Brad has to take random drug and alcohol tests.
- Brad won't be prosecuted for alleged plane incident with Angelina and Maddox. On Oct. 8, it was reported that the FBI never opened an investigation against Brad because there was "no case," though TMZ says the FBI is still working on gathering all the facts from the incident.
Queen Máxima's Dress Looks Straight Off the Chanel Runway, but It's From Your Favorite Store
From her black gloves to her pussy-bow tweed dress, we're getting major Chanel vibes from Queen Máxima's latest look. The Dutch royal accessorized her outfit to a T when she attended the opening of the European congress, choosing sleek black tights, Christian Louboutin peep-toe pumps, pearl flower studs, and an oversize hat.
After careful research, we determined that, no, Karl Lagerfeld did not create her outfit, despite its many feminine details that reflect the fashion house. In fact, her design is by Zara. Yes, the store you just shopped at yesterday (or, OK, last week). While this particular piece is sold out, there's a similar style available, along with plenty of alternative options for the sophisticated girl who likes a girlie touch. Get Another Look at Laura Prepon's Stunning Engagement Ring
After confirming their engagement last week, Laura Prepon and Ben Foster attended the world premiere of Inferno in Florence, Italy on Saturday evening. Laura wore a black polka-dot dress, which she paired with her blindingly-gorgeous diamond sparkler, while Ben looked handsome in a black suit. Also at the event was Tom Hanks, who brought along his lovely wife, Rita Wilson.
Laura and Ben first sparked romance rumors when they were spotted out together in NYC back in July, but the Orange Is the New Black actress has actually known her fiancé since she was 18. Laura and Ben are mutual friends with her That '70s Show costars, Danny Masterson and Ashton Kutcher, and during an appearance on Live With Kelly on Friday, Ashton joked about how upset he was that he found out about their surprise engagement on the news instead of from the stars themselves. "I'm double upset that neither of them told me and I got off the plane in New York and was like, 'What?!' They're all my friends and everybody is hooking up and it's weird!" he said.

If You Don't Like This Chinese Bride's First Wedding Gown, She's Got 3 More to Impress You With
Film star Tavia Yeung married actor Him Law in Hong Kong, and while the pair held numerous ceremonies, they finished their celebrations at the Ritz Carlton. Tavia's intricately stitched qipao, a traditional dress for a Chinese wedding, was gorgeous enough, the hem lightly grazing her feet so you could make out her matching flats. But as beautiful as the design was, it was no match for the gowns that followed.
Tavia also wore a cap-sleeved pouf dress complete with a floor-sweeping veil and then changed into her Ersa Atelier number, which she stayed in for most of the evening. This design, sleeveless and perfect for partying, contained a full tulle skirt of many layers, and when she sat down, it surrounded her like a cloud.
But Tavia's final outfit will make modest brides swoon: a mermaid silhouette finished with plenty of shimmer and lovely when styled with a feminine updo and thin headband. Read on to see every look from Tavia and Him's much-buzzed-about nuptials.

Selena Gomez Pops Up in Tennessee Amid Break From the Spotlight

On Saturday, Selena Gomez was spotted grabbing lunch at the Texas Roadhouse in Tennessee, a little over a month after she announced her break from the spotlight. The outing was captured on a couple of social media photos shared by Twitter user Klipa Matthew. In one of the snaps, Selena poses for a selfie with the fan, and in another video, the "Kill Em With Kindness" singer is seen snapping photos with a group of restaurant goers.
In late August, Selena announced that she would be taking time off after dealing with complications due to her lupus diagnosis. In statement to People, she said, "As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways. I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks, and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges. I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues."

Jimmy Fallon Could Not Keep a Straight Face While Making an SNL Cameo With Tina Fey
Of all the Saturday Night Live players in history, Jimmy Fallon is the one who is most likely to crack up mid-skit. That's just a scientific fact. Over the weekend, the Tonight Show host unexpectedly appeared with Tina Fey on their former stomping grounds, Weekend Update, as undecided voters from suburban Pennsylvania. Fey commits, but Fallon may or make not have forgotten all his lines - plus, how to do his accent. It's funny, just don't expect it to make any sense.

I Changed the Way I Dressed Because of a Guy and Here's What I Learned
"What are you wearing?!" That was one of the first sentences my ex-boyfriend ever spoke to me. I hadn't been rocking anything crazy - just a green graphic tee that featured a cartoon bubblegum machine, which I paired with skinny jeans and navy Converse. But as we walked around our college campus on that warm end-of-Summer night, chatting, flirting, and meeting up with friends, his words stayed with me. I felt embarrassed, and maybe a bit childish, too (he'd also mentioned that while picking apart my look). I'd later tuck that tee in the back of my dorm room drawer and donate it to charity.
Spoiler alert: I still miss that stupid shirt. Him? Not at all.
24 Pictures of Dwayne Johnson and His Beautiful, Blended Family
In case you weren't aware, Dwayne Johnson's family is one hell of a good-looking bunch. The former wrestler is father to two beautiful girls, nearly 15-year-old Simone, whom he shares with ex-wife and manager Dany Garcia, and 8-month-old Jasmine, whom he recently welcomed with longtime girlfriend Lauren Hashian. In addition to his beautiful daughters, Dwayne's mom, Ata, is also a force to be reckoned with. Not only has she beat stage three lung cancer, but she's battled depression and continued to come out on top. Today, we're paying homage to Dwayne and his rock-solid family. Keep reading for a look at their cutest pictures, then flip through The Rock's sweetest moments of all time.
How to Exercise Away Pesky Armpit Fat
It's true: there's no way to spot-reduce fat, but in addition to consistent fat-burning cardio, adding the following exercises to your workout routine can make a difference in how you feel in all your clothes - even around the armpit. Each works to tighten up the muscle groups around your armpit to help diminish the appearance of underarm fat.
It's also important to note that if you're concerned about the bulge around your bra, it simply might be time to get resized. Flattering clothes will alleviate the unnecessary tension or stress that comes with getting dressed.
12 New Books You Need to Put on Your Reading List This Fall
Summer's all about reading on the beach, but when it comes to Fall, it's all about picnics in the park and walks through pumpkin patches. I'm Brenda Janowitz, author of The Dinner Party, and I've got a great list of books to read while you're waiting in line for that hay ride. Ghost stories? Check. Mysteries? Check. There's even a little something for those of you who are ready for Christmas. So read on, and get ready to order!
Walgreens's New Rewards Program Is a Blessing For Drugstore Beauty Lovers
As a beauty fanatic, it's hard to pass a drugstore without stopping in. You tell yourself that you'll just be a few seconds - and that you'll only get the bare necessities - but then you leave half an hour later with a basket full of mascaras, nail polishes, and lipsticks. And sure, they were all affordable, but after going HAM, it still stings to see the combined total of your haul printed on the receipt.
By now, you know it's essential to be a member of any and all drugstores' loyalty programs. Walgreens has always offered points through its Balance Rewards system, but the company now offers an all-new program exclusively for beauty addicts. Completely free to join, Beauty Enthusiast functions as an extension of Balance Rewards but provides exclusive benefits when you buy makeup, hair products, skin care, grooming items, and even oral care.
Once you spend $50 on beauty-related purchases (which is admittedly embarrassingly easy), you'll receive 5,000 points. Considering that members immediately receive a one-time-use digital coupon for 20 times everyday points on beauty, you'll achieve that goal even faster. Five thousand points gets you five dollars free to use anywhere at Walgreens (including on more makeup). You can also get exclusive promotions, samplings, and product recommendations.
Even if you may not be able to resist the siren song of the drugstore beauty aisle, you now have a reason to just embrace your weakness in the face of a good deal.

These Disney Princess-Inspired Wedding Gowns Are Stunning, but 1 Is Causing Some Controversy
Even though we're well past childhood, we'll never stop obsessing over Disney princesses or their signature looks. Thankfully, we're not alone: Alfred Angelo continues to be inspired the iconic characters as well, and released another Disney Fairy Tale Weddings collection for Spring 2016. Looking at the runway, its easy to point out who inspired each design, as the details and overall vibe make it pretty clear. But according to Cosmopolitan, there's something - well, a lot of things - off about the Mulan-inspired dress. It's nothing like what Mulan wears in the movie and even happens to be historically inaccurate.
While the cartoon warrior princess is known for her hanfu, Alfred Angelo's design includes a "mandarin collar" - aka a style that was popularized more than a thousand years after the real Mulan lived. Then, in photos released by the brand, "Mulan" is pictured with an umbrella, echoing a part of the film where she reveals she doesn't feel at all like herself. ("Reflection," anyone?) It's stereotypical and could be viewed as insulting to many.
Regardless of all this, the designs are still stunning and definitely worth a scroll. Then be sure to check out the looks Disney ladies would wear right off the Fall '17 runways.
This Heartbreaking Story of How a Man Rescued Kittens in a Dumpster Has a Happy Ending
A kind man named Cliff is our new hero after rescuing a litter of newly born kittens that he found in a dumpster. He heard meowing from the pile of disposed wood and saw a tiny white kitten hanging on in between two beams. It made faint noises and Cliff realized there were others abandoned as well.
Cliff told Love Meow that someone had dumped the kittens into the dumpster and they were underneath a pile of wood that was thrown in on top of them. He spent seven hours digging them all out, although one didn't survive. The litter was as young as a week old or so, as they could barely open their eyes. Since they were so young, they required round-the-clock care, which one rescue group in Springfield, MO, Watching Over Whiskers, offered to provide. Thanks to them, the kittens were bathed and nursed back to health. Two of the smaller ones are even being fed by a rescue cat named Roxy, who just had six babies of her own.
This heartbreaking story thankfully had a happy ending, and the kittens are doing well at their foster home. Watch Cliff retrieve a kitten in the video above and see two of the kittens below!
17 Reasons It's Time to Watch The Nightmare Before Christmas Again
While most holiday movies feature warm, cuddly characters and can sometimes be too wholesome to handle, there's one seasonal movie that turns the holiday on its head: The Nightmare Before Christmas. That may be because it's the rare movie that's a scary holiday movie, and thus required viewing for Halloween and Christmas. Tim Burton's '90s classic is gorgeous, poignant, and it makes Christmas a little creepy - but in a good way. Here are all the reasons the animated flick is essential viewing for the season.

Look Back at Princess Charlotte's Cutest Pictures - So Far!
Princess Charlotte made her grand entrance on May 2, 2015, days after her reported April due date. 6- and 7-Year-Olds Couldn't Solve This Math Test Question, and We're Not Surprised
The internet is having a field day figuring out what the real answer is to a simple math problem. Twitter user Louise Bloxham shared a math problem from a Year 2 (equivalent to the first grade in the US) workbook that asked, "There were some people on a train. 19 people get off the train at the first stop. 17 people get on the train. Now there are 63 people on the train. How many people were on the train to begin with?"
@MichaelRosenYes Have you seen this one? Year 2!! http://pic.twitter.com/TDVjccH8U4
- Louise Bloxham (@LouiseBloxham) May 7, 2016
If you try solving it yourself, you'll probably get this setup: X - 19 + 17 = 63. All you have to do is solve for x, which gives you 65 as the answer:
@rachelrossiter @LouiseBloxham @MichaelRosenYes It is 65. x - 19 + 17 = 63
Therefore x -2 = 63 ...x = 65. Algebraic solution for a y2 Q.- Robyn Duckworth (@DuckworthRobyn) May 8, 2016
But if you look further into the comments, users start arguing that the answer is 46, not 65.
@teach_well @carveresque on a teacher's FB group a teacher said it was on the mark scheme as Being 46
- Louise Bloxham (@LouiseBloxham) May 8, 2016
Someone even drew a detailed illustration of how they came to that number:
@LouiseBloxham @MichaelRosenYes http://pic.twitter.com/OqhMnG7Wwq
- かな、かな@困惑中 (@kanaoyudu) May 10, 2016
Other commentators became philosophical and said that the math problem fails to factor in the train driver and inspector:
@PotMoss @MichaelRosenYes @LouiseBloxham Husband says "66, because we've forgotten train driver". But that doesn't factor in inspector...
- Mrs Davison (@Mrs_Dav_I_Son) May 8, 2016
The situation apparently became too much for one person, who said that everyone was "looking at it algebraically for proof purposes," when it was really just a simple equation.
@LouiseBloxham @MichaelRosenYes Question is perfectly fine. We are looking at it algebraically for proof purposes but it's simple add + sub.
- Olachi Akin (@ixXAkinXxi) May 9, 2016
Although the math question has stumped some parents and young children, the main concern here is not whether or not it can be solved, but if 6- and 7-year-olds should've been asked it. That answer to that question is simple: if there's this much debate about it with adults, then it's not suitable for children.

If The Girl on the Train's Haley Bennett Looks Familiar to You, This Is Why
Emily Blunt is the star of The Girl on the Train, but the adaptation boasts two other strong female leads played by Rebecca Ferguson and Haley Bennett. The former (though less recognizable with that blond hair) has starred in everything from the acclaimed miniseries The White Queen to Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. The latter, however, might be harder to place. Bennett has has small parts in films like Marley & Me and The Equalizer, but she's also had a handful of meaty roles. If you couldn't figure out why she looks so damn familiar (aside from her resemblance to Jennifer Lawrence), here are six movies you may have seen her in.

13 Magical Photos of Disney's Día de los Muertos Desserts That'll Make You Plan a Trip
Disney knows how to do Halloween. Every year, Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and the various international incarnations celebrate the holiday in a way that is festive and fun while also still being kid-appropriate. So it'a about time that the park took all that fanfare and put it behind another important holiday - Día de los Muertos, celebrated by its Mexican visitors around the same date.
Last year, Disney decided to honor the traditional Mexican holiday (which, to be clear, is not the same as Halloween in any way) with a few desserts. Available only at Disneyland, the various sweet treats resembled the Mexican holiday's signature sugar skulls. The desserts included caramel apples, white-chocolate-covered Rice Krispie treats, and cake pops. Though we don't know what Disney has planned for this year's Día de los Muertos, we've rounded up some of the prettiest shots of last year's selections that'll make you book a ticket to the park ASAP.
12 Facts You Didn't Know About Beauty Entrepreneur Huda Kattan
After reading beauty entrepreneur Huda Kattan's interview in Harper's Bazaar Arabia, we're even more obsessed with her than ever. As the cover star for the magazine's October 2016 issue, the makeup-artist-and-blogger-turned-business-owner spoke candidly about her life, discussing everything from her professional aspirations and facial fillers to religion and miscarriage.
Whether you are a devoted follower of her Instagram feed or have just become a fan through her lust-worthy longwear liquid lipsticks, read on. In addition to some stunning photographs from the spread, we've distilled 12 interesting facts from her profile that you likely didn't know. We're positive that you'll be absolutely inspired by her success (we were!). Then visit Harper's Bazaar Arabia to read the interview in full.
Huda was born in the United States.
Despite her enormous presence in the Middle East, she is from Tennessee by way of Oklahoma. She moved to Dubai in 2008.
Being the family "ugly duckling" made Huda obsessed with beauty.
Her baby sister Mona was always considered the "pageant princess" of the family, while their mother told Huda that she was "not the cutest." While she appreciates the honesty now, she considers this to be the reason she has always been so fascinated by beauty.
Michael Jackson's death triggered her to start her beauty industry career.
Until that moment in 2009, she had been working in finance. Huda was inspired by Jackson's passion for his work - and how he changed the world - she moved on to become a makeup artist and blogger.
She started her brand in 2012 with her sisters' help.
Alya and Mona Kattan joined Huda's start-up and helped her achieve her vision, which was first to create and distribute false eyelashes at Sephora in The Dubai Mall. This goal was reached in early 2013.
Her brand came to Sephora in the United States in 2015.
The company now carries Huda's lashes, lip pencils, and liquid lipsticks.
Huda rarely shares sponsored posts on Instagram.
She only posted two last year, explaining that "you don't make as much money, but long term you can make substantially more money because ultimately people will trust you."
She wants to be the Mark Zuckerberg or Oprah of the beauty industry.
"I promise I'm going to own the beauty world," Huda insisted. "My vision is that the beauty world will never be the same because of Huda Beauty."
Huda finds it hard to strike the perfect work-life balance.
The entrepreneur has a 5-year-old daughter (Nour) and feels intense remorse when she's not with her. "I grew up with my mom being at home, so I always feel this sense of guilt. Every single day my daughter's like, 'Please stay home today,' and it's really hard."
She's gotten work done, and she isn't ashamed to admit it.
Two years ago Huda underwent a very subtle nose job. "It was shortened a bit, my nose was twisted on the end and he did get rid of my hump, it's the Arab hump," she said of her plastic surgery. She also freely admitted to getting Botox and fillers in Los Angeles but looks to vitamins and red-light therapy for noninvasive antiaging results.
Huda is a practicing Muslim.
Though she faces judgment from fans for her decision to not cover, or wear hijab, she prays five times daily and hasn't missed a single prayer since she started in 2003.
Her inspiration is Sheikh Mohammed.
"He's a boss," Huda said of the vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates. "What he's done to Dubai is what I want to do to beauty."
Cyberbullies don't scare her.
"You are not going to make me stop blogging, you are not going to make me stop working hard," she said fiercely. "Nothing is going to stop me from doing that."

Mary-Kate Olsen's Coat and Sandals Combo Proves That Getting Dressed in Fall Can Be Tricky
One day you're freezing, the next you're sweating: Fall weather, especially in the season's early months, can be somewhat unpredictable. That's why we can totally relate to Mary-Kate Olsen's quirky outfit, which she wore while out in NYC on Friday. The actress-turned-designer styled cuffed black pants with a matching pair of sandals, but then - perhaps after realizing it was chillier than she thought - topped things off with a long, warm red coat. It kind of reminded us of a kooky combo we'd throw on to run a quick errand in, but the solid colored, structured pieces made it seem more elevated than casual sweats and flip flops.

Kristen Stewart Hits the Red Carpet After Getting Candid About Sex Scenes
Kristen Stewart has been hamming it up at the New York Film Festival all week long, and on Friday, she attended a Q&A session for Personal Shopper looking like her usual cool self. Kristen kicked off the week by popping up at the premiere for Certain Women in a red pantsuit, and on Wednesday, she was on hand to host An Evening With Kristen Stewart. The annual event recognizes stars who have made significant artistic contributions to film culture, and Kristen appears in three NYFF movies this year: Personal Shopper, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, and Certain Women.
In a recent interview with W magazine, Kristen opened up about what it was like filming her nude sex scene in Personal Shopper, saying, "I wasn't apprehensive. I feel super great with director Olivier [Assayas], as well . . . The scenes in which I don't have clothes on or the scenes that seem 'risqué' from an outsider's perspective, there was no acknowledgment on his part . . . They're very f*cking French. We are weirder about sh*t like that." We'll be adding this to her growing list of all the times Kristen used the f-word to get her point across.
