74 Things You Totally Did as a Teenager in the 2000s

Remember last decade, how you used to quote Mean Girls word for word while talking to your best friend on your Nokia cell phone? You wore low-rise jeans with tiny t-shirts and Rocket Dog sandals and spent your afternoons requesting music videos on TRL and learning the dance moves to "I'm a Slave 4 U." We'll be honest; we still quote Mean Girls and try to copy Britney Spears routines, but we look back on those days with equal parts dreamy nostalgia and sheer horror. We're taking a trip down memory lane with all the best (and worst) things about coming of age in the aughts. So here we go: you know you were a teenager in the 2000s if . . .

These Pictures of Drew Barrymore Will Remind You Why She's Always Been the Best

Drew Barrymore first charmed audiences when she was just a child; she scored a Puppy Chow commercial at just 11 months old, and her breakout role as Gertie in 1982's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial sent her into the stratosphere. She's been a Hollywood mainstay ever since. Her life and career has been punctuated with many public ups and downs, but it's clear that the actress has come out stronger than ever. We're taking a look back at Drew's incredible life in pictures.

When This Family of 5 Could Barely Afford Their Groceries, a Selfless Walmart Cashier Stepped In

It was just another typical shopping trip for Ashley Jordan and her husband, Michael. The parents lugged their youngest of three children around Walmart, filling their shopping cart to the brim with groceries while crossing their fingers that they'd be able to afford the total cost of it all. What happened next will warm your heart, and Ashley shared the whole story in a touching social media post to spread the word.

In the post, Ashley described why she and her husband dislike grocery shopping for their family of five. "We literally dread going to Walmart and buying groceries, period, because my husband's whole check goes to food for our family," she wrote.

On this visit to the superstore, Ashley encountered a sweet cashier, Sharnique Dasant, who commented on the large amount of groceries on the belt, which led Ashley to explain that they have a big family. While rummaging in her purse for the money to pay, Ashley said the Walmart cashier smiled at her and said, "You guys look like you need a blessing tonight."

After Sharnique entered something in on the keypad, Ashley looked down to see quite the pleasant surprise: Sharnique had paid for half of the family's groceries! The parents couldn't believe their eyes. "I was in complete shock because I never expected anything like that to ever happen," Ashley wrote. "Me and my husband were just staring at each other like is she serious? Did she really just do this?"

She went on to describe how she truly had trouble finding the right words to say to thank the kind cashier. "How could this woman who didn't even know me, know our situation, know us, why would she do this?" she asked in the post. But it looks like Ashley ended up finding the perfect way to show her thanks, and ended her post saying, "Thank you so much Sharnique Dasant - you truly are a blessing and you will never realize how much you helped us out and how much faith you have put back into our hearts." If this story doesn't restore your faith in humanity, we're not quite sure what will.

When Was the Last Time We Saw Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries?

The Vampire Diaries is bringing back a lot of familiar faces for its series finale, but we're most excited about the return of Elena Gilbert. Since Nina Dobrev famously left the show at the end of season six, A LOT has changed. Over the past two seasons, the group has battled heretics, vampire huntresses, crazy sirens, and now, they've even come face to face with the devil himself. While Elena will certainly have a rude awakening (pun intended) when she comes out of her sleeping curse, we can't help but think about her last appearance on the show. As you gear up for the finale, refresh your memory here.

The last time we saw Elena was in the season six finale, well, technically - but we'll get to that in a minute. After taking the cure and becoming human again, Elena attends Alaric and Jo's wedding as a bridesmaid. Much to her dismay (and everyone else in attendance at the ceremony), Kai shows up to cause chaos for the Gemini coven. As payback for Bonnie leaving him alone in the 1903 Prison World, he decides to link her life with Elena's, where the latter will remain in a sleeping curse until Bonnie dies. Unwilling to let anyone else risk their life for hers (and because Dobrev was leaving the show, of course), Elena says her final goodbyes to her loved ones. And so the sixth season ends with Elena tucked away in the Salvatore crypt where she will stay for the next 60-something years.

Fast-forward to season seven - literally, because there's a three-year time jump - things start to go haywire. Not only does Lily, aka Mama Salvatore, wreck havoc with her annoying heretics, but by the end of the season, there is a new mysterious evil looming in the Armory's occult vault. Even though Damon was warned about not going inside, when he hears Elena's voice, his emotions get the best of him. Of course, that voice is actually an illusion by the siren Sybil, who ends up using Damon and Enzo for her own evil doing throughout season eight.

While Elena is currently under a sleeping curse, she has appeared in multiple episodes this season through flashbacks, but that's just the beginning. As the show prepares for its final episode, she will be back - in the flesh - to say one last goodbye. Not only does the teaser show her reuniting with Stefan, but Julie Plec also revealed that she will come face to face with her true love, Damon. Of course, there is just one downside to her return. She will be attending the funeral of a major character. Even though we're not ready to let go, we can already tell Elena Gilbert's return is going to be epic.

1 Pair of Socks Completely Changed the Quality of Life For a Baby Born With "Butterfly" Skin

Although the birth of a child is memorable for every parent, baby Mackenzie's delivery was marked with both excitement as well as intense fear for her parents.

Immediately after giving birth, Liz Cadmus and her doctors discovered that Mackenzie was born with epidermolysis bullosa. This rare disorder causes immensely fragile skin that severely blisters and often sheds off. "I'll never forget the gasps when she was born - the inhale of everyone's breath when they saw that she was missing her skin," Liz told TODAY. "You could see blood vessels. You could see down to the bone."

As new parents, Liz and her husband, Nicholas, endured "a very dark time" while they learned how to help ease their baby's daily pain. "She is missing both keratin and collagen, and essentially those are like the fibrous glue that holds the layers of skin together," Liz said. "Learning to take care of Mackenzie was a journey - there is no cure for EB, so it's basically wound care. Nurses had to teach us how to take care of her."

"Butterfly children" is a common phrase for kids with EB because their skin is so delicate that it tears as easily as a butterfly's wings. When Mackenzie's parents brought her home, there were months of trial and error because whenever her bandages came off, it would cause even more damage to her skin. After some helpful advice from a nurse, the family tried out a new method of keeping her bandages on without destroying her skin: socks.

"I went to Walmart and bought lots of socks - I figured I'd keep trying different types until I found something that worked for Mackenzie," Liz said. "We found socks that worked, and as soon as she was able to switch to twice daily bandage changes instead of bandage changes every few hours, she started to heal."

Since then, Mackenzie's parents have created a Facebook page, Rock the Socks, to raise awareness for their baby's condition while also sharing what they've learned with the rest of the EB community. "Social media has become a big part of our life because it's such a rare disease and that's the only way to really communicate with other people who are going through what you're going through," Liz said.

In honor of their fighter's first birthday on Feb. 22, Liz and Nicholas are asking for people to post photos on social media of them rocking their socks with the hashtag #RTS1000. "Our goal is to get 1,000 individuals to post on her birthday to raise awareness. "EB is known as the worst disease you've never heard of, and these posts can help bring about awareness. She's amazing. She's so strong. She is such a fighter. Nothing really stops her . . . as long as she's bandaged and protected, you wouldn't know she has this horrific disease."

People Think the New American Boy Doll Reminds Them Too Much of Their Ex-Boyfriends

For the first time in its history, American Girl announced it's releasing its first-ever boy doll, Logan Everett! The doll, which will go on sale on Feb. 16, looks like the boy next door. He's brunette, plays the drums, wears flannel, and has a grown-up Justin Bieber haircut. It's exactly these qualities that's made the internet totally wary of him; he reminds us of any boy who's ever ghosted or sent a late-night text.

Naturally, the internet started to call Logan out on his bullsh*t and take guesses on what other qualities he most likely has.

Sorry, Logan, but you just remind us too much of our exes.

This Marijuana Cold Brew Will Give You a Serious Buzz

If you've ever dreamed of drinking weed-infused cold brew coffee, such an idea exists and it's called Somatik ($12). The new cannabis beverage company partnered with Ritual Coffee "to bring you (damn good) single-origin coffee, infused with pure California grown flower." While Somatik promises each bottle has "just the right dose of cannabis and caffeine for a mild euphoric effect and balanced experience," it does clearly state on the bottle that it contains 15 mg THC. According to High Times' "10 Commandments of Marijuana Edible Safety," "Eating 10–25 milligrams of THC will make your muscles relax, and waves of bliss will blanket your body. Giggling and silliness are common. You will feel relaxed and cozy . . . The high can last from four to six hours, or longer with higher doses."

While those clearly versed in edibles may know their tolerance, if you're new to consuming cannabis, High Times recommends "start[ing] with a low dose of 10 milligrams of THC and wait[ing] two hours before consuming any more cannabis." That would be approximately 2/3 of the bottle. Somatik says you can expect the beverage to taste "light-bodied and smooth with subtle notes of cherry, a hint of herbaceous flavor, and undertones of bright lemon." Sounds like a pretty brilliant way to wake up. SF Weekly says you can find Somatik at Harvest in San Francisco, Magnolia Wellness in Oakland, or online at Cannvis.

4 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Dropping Your Toddler's Naptime

Around my son's third birthday, he started resisting naptime. Considering that he'd always been a kid who seemed to relish his daily afternoon snooze as much as I did, I was not happy about this change. Like really not happy. I needed those two hours as much as he did in order not to turn into the 6 p.m. monster that I was certain he'd now become every single day, crazy from exhaustion.

We had recently returned from a two-week vacation to Florida during which he had dropped his nap altogether, a situation his dad and I actually encouraged because it meant neither of us were stuck inside missing two hours of afternoon sunshine every day and that he went to bed early enough that we got to enjoy our evenings and a full-night sleep, since he was clocking 12 glorious unconscious hours every night.

But in between returning from that trip and his birthday, he'd started napping again without hesitation, falling back into his routine of a 90-120 minute nap between 1 and 3 p.m., followed by an 8:30 p.m. bedtime and 6:30 a.m. wake-up. So what happened? Well, I partially blamed the recent switch to his big-boy bed, which had given him easier access to the outside world, but still I wondered. Was this it? Was naptime officially gone?

Not willing to concede its loss, I persevered, and I'm happy to say, after about a week of nap battles, we're back in a good place and I'm hoping my little guy will keep napping for a while longer (most doctors recommend kids nap until around their fourth birthdays, when the amount of sleep they need goes down slightly, but as all moms know, every kid is different).

If you're facing a similar situation or are simply wondering if it's time to give up your child's nap, ask yourself the following four questions before you decide.

  1. On days your child doesn't nap, is he cranky in the afternoon and/or dozing off in the evening? If so, he's probably not yet ready to be nap-free.
  2. Is bedtime becoming a burden? If your child is suddenly fighting bedtime, going to sleep at ridiculously late hours, or waking super early, it might mean she's napping too long. Try to move her nap to earlier in the day so she has more time to wear herself out in the afternoon, or try shortening her naps, even if it means you have to wake her up.
  3. Does he seem tired at naptime? Is he suppressing yawns and rubbing his eyes, or does he seem ready to run around your house for another few hours? If that's the case, consider transitioning naptime instead to quiet playtime, a period when your child stays in their room and plays quietly with toys and books, still giving you some downtime.
  4. Do you need your child to nap? If holding on to a nap is important enough to you and your schedule, despite knowing that your child taking one will also mean a later bedtime and earlier wake-up, then stick with it. Your child will eventually adjust.

NASA Just Discovered a New Solar System That Could Sustain Life

NASA's latest discovery will leave you in total shock and awe. The agency announced on Feb. 22 that it's discovered a whole new solar system with seven plants - and three of them are within the "habitable zone."

The solar system is called TRAPPIST-1, named after the telescope The Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST), which helped find the first three planets. It's similar to our own solar system; it consists of seven planets, is 40 light years away, and orbits around a giant star (though this one is smaller). Three of the planets in this system exist in the "habitable zone, an area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water." NASA believes that all seven planets might have liquid water on their surface, but it's most likely the three planets closest orbiting around the star definitely have it - making life possible.

Astronomers also believe that these planets could be "tidally locked to their star," which would mean that one side is always day and the other night. It could also signify that these planets have different weather than we do here on Earth.

This is the first time astronomers have ever made such a discovery. "Answering the question 'are we alone' is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington, in a press release.

The image above shows an artist concept of what the solar system could look like. The illustration below is another artist concept of what the surface of a planet could be like in this system.

You can learn more about the TRAPPIST-1 system by watching the video below. All these findings are published in the science journal Nature.

You'll Never Eat Another Gummy Bear or Marshmallow Again After Hearing What It's Made From

If you look at the ingredients on a package of gummy bears - even organic ones - you'll see expected things like corn or brown rice syrup and sugar. But you'll also see something called gelatin. Seems innocent enough, but its source might surprise you. Gelatin is a yellowish, odorless, and nearly tasteless substance that is made by prolonged boiling of skin, cartilage, and bones from animals. It's made primarily from the stuff meat industries have left over - we're talking about pork skins, horns, and cattle bones. Ugh.

I guess if you're into the philosophy of using the whole animal, you'll be psyched about this. Plus gelatin contains 18 amino acids, so it does offer some nutritional benefits. But if you're vegan, you'll definitely want to skip the chewy candies and your great-aunt's Jell-O mold - it's made with gelatin, too. This animal-derived ingredient can also be found in some vitamins and medications, marshmallows (not Trader Joe's - they're vegan!), cheeses, yogurts, soups, salad dressings, jams and jellies, fruit snacks, and canned hams. If this tidbit of info grosses you out, you'll want to pay closer attention to these products' food labels.

George Clooney Admits He "Chased" Amal For "Many Months" After They First Met

George Clooney was once one of Hollywood's hottest bachelors, who swore he would never get married again (he was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993). That is, until Amal Alamuddin (now Amal Clooney) came along. George first laid eyes on the human rights attorney at his home in Lake Como, Italy, in 2013. During a previous appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, the 55-year-old actor revealed, "We met in Lake Como. She was a friend of a friend who came to visit and then I chased her for many months, calling and writing, those kinds of things." George also admitted to Ellen DeGeneres that "from the minute we met, we just sort of felt like we were going to be together."

He ended up proposing six months later, and even though he had it all planned out, it ended up being "one of those horrible moments," he told Ellen. "I plotted the whole thing out. I had the ring hidden behind her. I had music playing, my Aunt Rosemary's gonna sing 'Why Shouldn't I.' Everything was planned out . . . it was like 25 minutes. Finally I literally said, 'Look, I hope the answer's yes, but I need an answer 'cause I'm 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon.' And she said 'Oh, yes,' and it worked out really well."

Fast-forward a few months later and George and Amal are husband and wife. The couple tied the knot in Venice, Italy, in September 2014 and are currently expecting twins (a boy and a girl)! Maybe fairy tales do exist.

These Photos Are Battling the Idea That Dads Are Just Glorified Babysitters

Although many moms get the chance to carry a baby, give birth, and breastfeed, dads don't get those same experiences. But when it comes to parenting, those differences are set aside, and it's clear that fathers are just as capable and responsible for their child's development as mothers.

If you've ever heard someone praise a dad for "babysitting" his little one, you've probably thought about the double standard that comes with that statement. Why are men praised for parenting, being involved, or spending time with their child, while moms are just expected to? In an attempt to shed light on those misconceptions, an Instagram account is celebrating all that fathers do for their kiddos.

DontForgetDads is working to end the unfair belief that dads and moms aren't equal one adorable snapshot at a time and is staying truthful to its tagline: "Fatherhood without fear. I don't babysit. I parent." Check out the most heartwarming snapshots ahead!

Someone Created a Song Using Music Notes in the Shape of a Unicorn and It's Too Cute

What happens when you create a song using music notes in the shape of a unicorn? Magic, of course. Popular YouTube blogger Andrew Huang recently used music software to test out this experiment. The end result pretty much sounds like what you'd expect! It's feminine, sprightly, and sounds like it's straight out of a feudal fairy tale.

In just two days, Andrew's tweet amassed more than 100,000 retweets and 158,000 "likes." Even his followers have since taken to trying the experiment themselves. One Twitter user, for example, did the same project except he changed the instrument to a drum kit and found that it still sounds pretty damn awesome. Listen to the whimsical ditty in its entirety, above.

4 Theories About Kylo Ren and Rey's "Strange Connection" in Star Wars

If you think the Force has awakened in the Star Wars universe, just wait until you catch wind of this. Recently, it seems the official Star Wars website made two seemingly tiny changes to the bios of Kylo Ren and Rey. On Kylo's side, it says, "A mysterious connection seemed to link the two." Meanwhile, on Rey's side, it says she was "captured by the dark side warrior Kylo Ren, with whom she shared a strange connection." Hold up. Strange? Mysterious? It's true, we had an inkling that there was more to their relationship than meets the eye, but maybe we're not going deep enough. So we came up with some theories.

1. They're Related

One of the most common theories about Rey's parents is that she's a Skywalker. Sure, it's obvious. But Rey does find Luke's lightsaber by sheer power of the Force. She shows obvious Force sensitivity and enhanced abilities out the gate. Then there's the fact that Kylo Ren sees the island Luke's on while reading Rey's mind! Kylo Ren is obviously a Skywalker: he's the son of Leia Organa. If the two are related, it's a crazy showdown of brother and sister, of Luke and Leia, and of the dark side and the light.

2. They're Destined For the Classic Skywalker/Palpatine Model

Another popular theory out there is that Rey is a descendant of Emperor Palpatine. This would set her and Kylo Ren up for a Star Wars face-off that occurs in every single trilogy: a Palpatine vs. a Skywalker. In the first trilogy (numerically), Anakin Skywalker faces off against Emperor Palpatine. In the second, Luke goes up against the same villain, who has since become even more evil. This would create a sort of destiny between the two names. Rey, a Palpatine, going against Kylo Ren, a Skywalker. What's more, the Palpatine bloodline has shifted to the light side, while a Skywalker has gone dark. Who knows how it could turn out?

3. They Mark the End of the Jedi and the Sith

In this new trilogy, there are no Jedi or Sith . . . yet. On the good side, we have Force-sensitive individuals like Maz Kanata and Lor San Tekka and Rey and even Finn. They all demonstrate Force skills in varying degrees, but none of them are Jedi knights. Kylo Ren, of course, is a member of the First Order, but neither he nor Snoke identifies as a Sith lord. Now that we know Episode VIII is called The Last Jedi, it seems we're coming to a real turning point. Regardless of who the last Jedi is, what if Rey and Kylo Ren represent the future of the galaxy? What if everything changes once they both harness their power? It's hard to say what this would mean, but it's certainly interesting to consider.

4. Their Connection Will Result in Insane Consequences

We know Kylo Ren is very troubled. It's clear his journey to the dark side has been tumultuous, and Han Solo very nearly draws him out of it. Rey, on the other hand, seems to have a darkness in her. There's that moment during her lightsaber duel with Kylo Ren, where she very nearly delivers a deadly blow and kills him. Furthermore, Kylo recognizes this darkness in her as well. He offers to train her! What if they switch spots? What if Kylo pulls Rey to the dark side just as he finds himself drawn to the light? What if all the heroes are actually villains and vice versa? It could change the whole trilogy as we know it.

The Last Jedi hits theaters on Dec. 15.

Witness Ryan Gosling's Piano Skills in This Behind-the-Scenes La La Land Clip

By now, you likely know that Ryan Gosling really played the piano as part of his role as Sebastian in award season juggernaut La La Land. It's one of the many fun facts about the film that's been floating around for months now. Even John Legend talked about it during our interview with him in January. While we wouldn't say we necessarily doubt Gosling's abilities, the nature of "movie magic" makes it hard to tell exactly how good he is. Thankfully, Variety has released new behind-the-scenes footage of the actor tickling those ivories, and he's just as good as everyone says he is.

When Are the 2017 Oscars? Plus, Everything Else You Need to Know About the Show

The Oscars are the grand finale of award season, and this year, we have more to look forward to than ever. La La Land is up for an astonishing (and recording-tying) 14 awards, Viola Davis has already broken a record, and unless one of them doesn't show up for their nominated categories, ex-couple Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield will be in the same place at the same time. (It's exciting, OK?) If you're looking forward to the big show, take a look at all the need-to-know details below!

The Nominees

The best picture race is incredibly tight, with Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion, Manchester by the Sea, and Moonlight all in the running. At least one actor from each of those movies is up for an individual nod, including Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Casey Affleck, Denzel Washington, and Viola Davis. There are also plenty of first-time nominees like Andrew Garfield, Ruth Negga, Mahershala Ali, and Dev Patel.

The Snubs

Notably missing from the list of nominees are Amy Adams (Arrival) and Tom Hanks (Sully) - both of whom ABC accidentally (and awkwardly) listed on the Oscars' website as nominees. Both Hanks and Adams received nominations from the Critics' Choice Awards, but Adams also earned them from the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes. It's not shocking that they're not included, but it is slightly surprising.

The Host

This year's ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Meanwhile, Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd are producing the show.

The Presenters

Last year's acting winners, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brie Larson, Mark Rylance, and Alicia Vikander, are all scheduled to be presenters. Emma Stone, David Oyelowo, Janelle Monáe, Leslie Mann, Felicity Jones, Dwayne Johnson, John Cho, Javier Bardem, Riz Ahmed, Amy Adams, Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Jamie Dornan, Chris Evans, Gael García Bernal, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Dakota Johnson, Shirley MacLaine, Kate McKinnon, and Hailee Steinfeld will also present during the show.

The Performers

Justin Timberlake, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sting, and John Legend will all be performing their Oscar-nominated songs during the ceremony.

Sophie and Maisie, who were 13 and 12 respectively when Game of Thrones started, have shared a ton of adorable moments together over the years.
