8 Reasons You Should Travel Europe by Train
Next time you touch down in Europe, it's time to ditch the plane. This month, I had the divine pleasure of riding the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train from Venice to Paris, and it was absolutely the ride of a lifetime. Sure, the train is one of the fanciest travel experiences you could possibly get, but I think getting on the tracks would be fun even without all the bells and whistles. Wondering why taking the train in Europe is all that? I've compiled a nice list for you.
1. The Scenery Is Absolutely Stunning
Traveling by countryside really gives a striking sense of how beautiful Europe's more rural areas are. During my train ride from Venice to Paris, the shimmering waters of Italy turned into sprawling green fields that eventually undulated into the staggering peaks of the Swiss Alps. Some of the views from the train window are truly, truly breathtaking. I had to resist the urge to have my phone out the window every other second.
2. You Get a Glimpse of a More Modest European Lifestyle
There's a certain European quaintness in these areas that you don't quite see in the region's most iconic metropolises. It was exceptional to see all the small towns and farms we passed through along the way. These tiny communities suggest a simple life, unplugged and removed from the modern world. As you get toward the Alps, the villages - which are nestled into the base of the mountain range - get smaller and more charming. It's captivating.
3. You Stop in So Many Different Countries and Cities
On my particular train, there were more than a dozen stops. Each location had its own charm, and perhaps the most gorgeous stroll came in Innsbruck, Austria. It's worth noting that these stops only last 45 minutes or so, but it's plenty of time to get some air, stretch your legs, and take in the sights. Plus, if you want to spend the night in any of the various cities you pass through, it might be worth hopping off the train and hopping on again the next day. Make your own way.
4. The Experience Itself Can Be Really Phenomenal
Granted, this all depends on how much money you want to spend. A standard train might not offer the most glamorous experience in the world, but there are more upscale options that might suit you. If you opt to splurge on a more luxury experience (like, say, my journey on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express), you're in for a world-class experience that features delicious food, otherworldly accommodations and service, and more.
5. You Get to Meet Awesome People
If you do take an overnight train (or a multiple-night train), you're going to get pretty cozy with your neighbors. It's especially interesting to spend an evening in the dining car, the recreation car, and even the bar car. In such close quarters, you hear a lot of stories and meet a lot of characters. Circumstance might just bring some pretty fascinating people under the same roof.
6. It Doesn't Take as Long as You Think
When you think of the United States, the prospect of taking the train can seem kind of daunting. It can take days and days and days to get from point A to point B. When I took a train from Los Angeles to Portland, it took me 30 hours, so I get it.
You have to remember that Europe is way more compact, so you'll get places a lot faster. It took less than 24 hours to get from Venice to Paris, and we stopped through Austria and Switzerland in that time. You can really get around with just a few weeks of vacation time.
7. It's Way More Comfortable Than a Plane
I've already teased the service and culinary potential of a nice train ride, but there's more. Even if you don't opt for a luxury train ride, you still have the freedom to really stretch your legs while the train is in motion, much more so than on a packed plane. On the more high-end or long-term trains, you have the option to lounge even more and to lie down.
8. It Makes Your Trip That Much More Special
There's just something about riding a train through Europe that's difficult to put into words. It inspires a sense of whimsy, excitement, and adventure. When the sun goes down and the lights stay bright, it's like you're in another era entirely. Once you feel it, you'll never forget it.

9 Things You Shouldn't Tell Your Friends About Your Marriage
While our friends are often our biggest supporters and "chosen family," there are a few things you should avoid telling them about your marriage. Why? Well, in some cases it would just violate your spouse's privacy, and in other cases, it could taint how people view the marriage . . . which can be detrimental in the long run. In certain situations, it may be advisable to only tell certain friends "certain things" and vice versa. No matter what, be careful when you share information about your marriage - lest it be held against either of you down the line.
1. Sexual Kinks
We all talk to our friends about sex . . . and it's OK to share some details. However, if your partner has something he or she is very private about - say, he likes to wear women's underwear or she likes to wear a strap on - whatever the case is regardless of sexual orientation and gender, be cautious about what you share with your friends. Sure, we all have that "one friend" we can reveal stuff to - I am typically that friend that people talk to - but not all friends need to know about a spouse's proclivities, especially if he or she is not open about it to begin with.
2. Every Fight
Obviously, our friends are there to hear us out when we clash with our spouses, but if you give too much detail, be prepared for your friends, rightly or not rightly, to judge your spouse. If you're on the verge of divorce, it's another thing, but still, just be cautious, otherwise it can create a worse divorce process. If you're in an abusive marriage, please share that with your friends. But, in most cases, it's good to not divulge every vicious detail, and if you do, keep it to a few select friends.
3. An Affair
OK . . . this one is so tough. How do you carry that secret around? You don't. You wait. You take your time. You consider how you want to handle this. Do you want a divorce? Counseling? You make the choice first in your mind . . . and then once you've decided, you reveal your spouse's affair, or not, based on where you see the two of you going. You can pick one person to share with, of course, but if you go back to your spouse, expect some flack. In this case, a friend is probably better to tell than a parent. I just think you need to first decide a general direction of where you're headed . . . and pick one or two people to talk to about this, before or IF ever making a big reveal.
4. Salary
This is touchy. A few of my friends and I openly share such information, but these are very close lifelong friends and only a few of them. Overall, I think your and your spouse's income should be private. You can say if you're comfortable or not . . . or really not, like struggling, but sharing too much of this information could backfire in your face.
5. Mental Health Issues or Learning Disabilities
If your spouse is an advocate and writer on bipolar disorder, then hey - share on! But if your spouse is not comfortable sharing this information, you shouldn't be sharing it either. You should ask them who is OK to know. I am not advocating for keeping silent or "stigmatizing" mental health issues more than they already are, but before sharing that your spouse has anxiety or ADHD or whatever the case may be, you should have your spouse's permission first. They need to be comfortable knowing that others may then want to ask questions. Personally, I hope your spouse would be open, but many people are not, and in that case, it's a matter of respecting your spouse.
6. Family Drama
I'm not talking about crap your MIL or his or her sister is pulling. I'm talking about any deep and dark family secrets that your spouse's family may have. Those are the things you need to keep quiet about, for sure. Simply put, they're not your secrets to tell.
7. Sexual Mishaps
OK, so if your spouse sucks in bed, no one can blame you for wanting to complain, but before you b*tch about your spouse's sexual failings, try to work on these issues with your spouse first. Complaining isn't going to make those orgasms any better in the first place.
8. The Past
Did your spouse have a shady past? Let your spouse decide who gets to know that and who doesn't. Keep that stuff to yourself. It's probably hard enough on your spouse as is.
9. Trash Talk
If your spouse says bad things about your friends . . . do you really want them to hear it? Unless you're planning on getting a divorce, don't do it! It will only create hurt feelings and drama.
Obviously there are a few close friends we can always confide in and who always confide in us, but be cautious about who you choose!
We Asked the Riverdale Cast Who They'd "Swipe Right" on From the Show
Archie Andrews and friends have been modernized for 2017 in Riverdale. And with all the love triangles on the show, we wanted to know: who would the cast swipe right on should they find themselves on modern dating apps like Tinder? (Or Bumble. Whatever floats your boat.)
We caught up with the cast at The Paley Center For Media ahead of the show's finale and were not at all surprised to hear stars Madelaine Petsch and Camila Mendes gush over two certain cast members, given their affinity for the "Daddies" of the show. Sessions's New Drug Policy Called "Ineffective and Discriminatory" - They're Not Wrong
Jeff Sessions has long signaled he would lead the Justice Department with an uncompromising position on crime. Following a tumultuous week for the department, the attorney general explicitly defined his policy on crime, and it will almost certainly lead to a continuation of the nation's mass incarceration epidemic.
In a letter addressed to federal prosecutors, Sessions outlined his "charging and sentencing" policy. "It is a core principle that prosecutors should charge and pursue the most serious, readily provable offense," Sessions wrote. "By definition, the most serious offenses are those that carry the most substantial guidelines sentence, including mandatory minimum sentences."
Though not entirely surprising, Sessions's commitment to doubling down on mandatory minimums is alarming for a number of reasons. Most notably, it poses a threat to black and inner-city communities that have unquestionably been the victims of harsh mandatory minimum laws. The Congressional Black Caucus chairman, Representative Cedric Richmond, described Sessions's letter as enforcing a policy that has been proven "ineffective and discriminatory."
During President Barack Obama's administration, there was a bipartisan effort to review and relax mandatory minimums. However, that is unlikely to regain traction. Eric Holder, the former attorney general under Obama, reiterated Richmond's position in a letter responding to Sessions's.
"The policy announced today is not tough on crime. It is dumb on crime," Holder said. "It is an ideologically motivated, cookie-cutter approach that has only been proven to generate unfairly long sentences that are often applied indiscriminately and do little to achieve long-term public safety."
There is, perhaps, one winner to benefit from Sessions's "seriousness" on crime offensive: the for-profit private prison industry. It's certainly no coincidence that two of Sessions's former Senate aides, David Stewart and Ryan Robichaux, are now lobbyists for GEO Group - a private prison facility. Sessions reversed Obama's directive to suspend government contracts with private prisons back in February, just weeks after he was approved as attorney general.
We Have a Crazy Theory About Betty's Older Brother, So Just Hear Us Out
Riverdale just keeps getting crazier and crazier, and we love it. While the season one finale ties up a few loose ends, it also opens a huge can of worms for next season. Aside from the fact that the episode left things on a cliffhanger with Fred getting shot, it also casually drops a major bombshell about the Cooper family - Alice has a son.
As FP Jones points out during their dinner before homecoming, Alice and Hal had a major fight during their high school prom. While Alice initially refuses to provide any further details, she later reveals to Betty that they were actually arguing over her unborn baby. Even though Hal wanted her to get an abortion, she decides to give birth at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy group home and give it up for adoption. That's right, Betty and Polly have an older brother. While we can't help but wonder who the mystery man is, it seems the question we should be asking is, who is his father?
What if the reason Hal and Alice were fighting wasn't because she was pregnant, but because she was pregnant with FP's baby? Seeing that these two have had some undeniable sexual tension all season, it would certainly make a lot of sense . . . and cause a lot of drama between Jughead and Betty (sharing a sibling often does that to a couple). After Jughead's birthday, FP even teases Alice's dark Southside background, adding that "snakes don't shed their skin so easily." Perhaps they had a heated affair when they were younger, and she was forced to give up the baby to maintain her newfound clean-cut image with Hal.
That still begs the question: who is their son? Buckle up, because this is where it gets crazy. I have a major feeling that Joaquin (Kevin's Southside boyfriend from earlier this season) is actually Jughead and Betty's long lost half-brother. I know, I know, but just hear me out. As Betty added, her brother would be somewhere in his early 20s. While Joaquin appears to be the same age as the other characters, he isn't shown to attend high school. His last name could also be another indicator that he's FP and Alice's son. Until just recently, the show has been very secretive about his full name (which we now know is Joaquin DeSantos), but why? What if the foster family Jughead goes to live with in the finale in is the same foster family that took in Joaquin. Perhaps that's how Alice and FP's dark secret comes to light? You also can't deny his striking resemblance to the two characters (Alice's bright eyes and FP's jet black hair). Need even more convincing? The actor who plays Joaquin (Rob Raco) is all for the crazy theory. Shortly after the finale, he cryptically tweeted, "FP + Alice = who...?" Either he's just messing with us, or something big is about to go down.

Thanks to one sneaky reporter, we now have some interesting insight on how President Donald Trump is planning to decorate part of the White House. Trey Yingst, a White House correspondent for One America News Network, recently tweeted an image of a large framed map displaying Trump's 2016 electoral college victory. "Spotted: A map to be hung somewhere in the West Wing," the reporter explained in the tweet. Yes, Trump still can't get over the election. Maybe he should also consider displaying that side-by-side comparison of his inauguration to Barack Obama's to bring him back down to earth a bit.
When Yingst shared the news of this eye-roll-inducing decor choice, his tweet quickly went viral, with many replying to comment on how "insecure" and "petty" the current White House staff is.

If you're thinking of adding some money to your rainy-day fund, then there are a few ways to make a quick buck. But making money isn't always easy, and some of these tasks are time-consuming, so be sure to pick ones that you don't mind doing. Here are some suggestions:
- Plan a vacation: There are people looking for help with vacation planning on TaskRabbit, an website that matches up task-doers with task-givers. One of the tasks that you can do from home is help out with vacation planning, which can mean hours of research. Some of the listings charge anywhere from $13 for help with finding plane tickets to about $62 for help with planning a two-week trip to Europe.
- Clean someone's home: Cleaning a home is another way to make a quick buck, and there are a number of cleaning tasks available on TaskRabbit that can go for over $100, depending on how extensive the chore is.
- Deliver items: Have a car? Maybe you can earn $50 or more by helping someone move items. My friend recently paid a TaskRabbiter $50 to collect a cabinet for her. Check out the delivery tasks that are doable on the site. You can even earn money by helping people unpack their stuff.

This Silky Mineral Sunscreen Doesn't Leave a White Cast - and I'll Never Turn Back
Not to brag or anything, but I have pretty good skin. I frequently get complimented on my complexion, which I appreciate, especially because I work hard at keeping my skin healthy. Whenever I get questions from friends regarding what they can do for better skin, I always mention two cardinal beauty rules that I never break: don't go to bed with makeup on, and always wear sunscreen.
My obsession with sunscreen is almost comical, and many of my friends look at me like a psychopath while I'm screaming at them for tanning. Despite my dogmatic sunscreen habits, I'm also incredibly picky about sunscreen formulas. Luckily, the Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Sun Screen SPF 30 ($36) passed my test, and I have a new favorite item to add to my skin-care routine.
The tinted product is a broad-spectrum SPF with mineral sunscreen, meaning that its ingredients physically block your skin from being hit by the sun's rays. This is different from chemical sunscreens, which use active ingredients that absorb UV rays. This creates a chemical reaction that changes into heat, releasing it from the skin.
Many people try to avoid chemical sunscreens because they are potentially irritating to the skin, clog pores, and cause skin discoloration. However, chemical sunscreens also are typically thinner and more comfortable to wear than their physical counterparts.
The problem with physical (sometimes called mineral) sunscreens is that the main ingredient, zinc oxide, tends to leave a white cast on the skin and have a chalky formula. Somehow, Drunk Elephant has found a way around this pitfall with Umbra Tinte. The physical tinted sunscreen contains 20 percent zinc oxide but manages to have a soft texture and matte finish and is a great base for the rest of your makeup. It's not the least bit chalky and leaves behind no white residue or strong sunscreen smell.
The product comes out of the tube a beige hue but can be blended into the skin easily and is flattering on light-medium to deep skin tones. We tested the formula on both medium-light skin and deep skin, and the sunscreen blended in flawlessly on both. The lotion gives the wearer a glowy, filtered appearance with a light amount of coverage. If you have a very light complexion, Drunk Elephant recommends its nontinted version, Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 ($34).
In addition to sun protection, the cream is also packed with antioxidants to benefit and moisturize your skin. It contains sunflower shoot extract, raspberry seed oil, and marula oil, which help moisturize and prevent premature aging.
This is a great choice for those of us who prefer more natural beauty products, and I can't wait to replace the white-tinted sunblock in my medicine cabinet with this one.

President Trump's contentious travel ban was never based on fact, but firmly rooted in an illegitimate fear that refugees and asylum seekers from predominately Muslim countries might be terrorists. Despite the legitimate fact that only three refugees were responsible for three terror-related deaths nearly 50 years ago, Trump contended that suspending America's refugee resettlement was a matter of national security. But perspective, helpfully offered by Muslim activist Qasim Rashid on Twitter, presents a far greater threat to America's safety: gun violence.

The numbers Rashid cites are from an independent gun violence nonprofit, Gun Violence Archive, because the Center for Disease Control does not track gun violence (nor does any other government bureau). According to its website, there have been 21,719 gun-related incidents, 5,304 deaths, and 123 mass shootings in 2017 alone. These are staggering numbers without Rashid's comparison, but his parallel presents a striking hole in Trump's logic.
Rashid's comparison is not new nor original, but it does shed light on the obscenely ignorant notion that refugees are in someway inclined to violence. When Trump first introduced his not-a-Muslim-travel-ban, social media users circulated a graph from the CATO Institute which showed the relative deaths caused by refugees compared to other deaths. What did it show? That absolutely zero people from any of the countries listed on Trump's ban has killed anyone in a terror attack on United States soil in the last 40 years.
For people who value statistical data: the CATO Institute also estimates that the probability an American citizen will die by a foreign-born terrorist is 0.00003 percent.

How Alien: Covenant Connects to Prometheus and the Original Alien
It's been five years since the release of Prometheus, the first of multiple prequels to the iconic Alien film. Nearly 40 years ago, that first film delighted and horrified audiences with the introduction of the malicious and blood-hungry alien race known as Xenomorphs. As the Alien universe continues to grow larger with the release of Alien: Covenant, it's impossible not to look for connections between all the films. Does the new film bring us full circle? Are we finally getting the full picture? Let's break it down.
Before we get to the big answer, let's go over how Alien: Covenant connects to Prometheus. It's pretty simple: Covenant takes place about 10 years after the first film. At the end of Prometheus, we know Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David (the android played by Michael Fassbender) fly to another planet. They want to find the place where the Engineers (aka the massive human-like beings who created the humans on Earth) lived and not where they conducted their experiments. Seeing as the world in Covenant seems different from the one we see in Prometheus, it's safe to say Shaw and David found what they were looking for. We have clues to confirm it: Covenant's crew finds David and Shaw's ship, and of course, they encounter David himself. So, the biggest connection back to Prometheus is this character. And, of course, the alien monsters (the Xenomorphs) continue to be a thread through all films.
Warning: Spoilers below.
But how does Covenant connect to Alien? Well, it doesn't quite get there . . . yet. Even so, we can begin to see how we might eventually tie everything up. The mission the Alien: Covenant crew is tasked with is to find a new Earth-like planet and colonize it. The hope is to rebuild the human race. It's possible, if the colony mission ends up being a success (we're not entirely sure by the end of the film), that this is where Ripley could come into play. In fact, she could be one of the slumbering colonists on the ship. After all, Prometheus takes place in 2093, and Covenant is in 2104. Alien's setting is the year 2122, so we're only 18 years away from meeting Ripley. In Covenant, we learn there are seven remaining years before the ship reaches the new planet. That puts us at 2111 or 2112, just 10 or 11 years away from the original film. Could the next entry be the final piece of the puzzle? We'll just have to wait and see.

50 Years Later, Walt Disney's Original Hand-Drawn Disneyland Map Has Been Found
An invaluable piece of theme park history is about to be auctioned off at what will likely be a million-dollar price point. In Sherman Oaks, Van Eaton Galleries is gearing up to sell the original map of Disneyland drawn by Walt Disney himself in 1953. Though the gallery has been selling animation memorabilia for over two decades, the map is said to be the most prized Disney item sold at an auction.
According to the gallery's co-owner Mike Van Eaton, the map was was presented in meetings with prospective investors. A year later, Disney created a newer and more accurate map. Shortly thereafter, a Disney employee found the original map in Disney's office and asked if he could hold onto it as a keepsake. The employee kept it for decades before Van Eaton Galleries eventually acquired it.
In an interview with ABC7, Van Eaton said that "an artifact like this, which is so deeply rooted in the creation of Disneyland, still exists today is astonishing." Adding, "we have an item that Walt Disney created during a 48-hour period of hard work and imaginative genius, which succeeded in getting him the funding he needed to build one of the most successful endeavors of his career, and which he continued to personally use throughout the entire building stages of Disneyland."
The map will be auctioned in June 2017 along with 800 other original Disneyland artifacts and souvenirs. Leading up to the auction, the gallery will host a public exhibit in May. It's expected that the map will sell for $750,000 to $1 million.

The Best Thing My Mom Taught Me About Cooking
I was fortunate enough to grow up in a house where my mom cooked for our family of six just about every night. My mom is Italian and grew up with seven sisters and two brothers in New York, so her knack for cooking and love of food likely stemmed from sitting down to home-cooked meals with a family of 12 on a regular basis. You could say she knows a thing or two (thousand) about cooking.
Now that I'm an adult and love cooking just as much as she does (I even get paid to write about food!), I'm always trying to master the art of cooking as a 20-something on a budget. I rely on my mom's passed-down knowledge more than I could have imagined, and while she taught me plenty of recipes (everything I know about pasta, I owe it to her) and has answered an embarrassing number of my midcooking-panic questions over the phone, there's one solid piece of cooking advice that has stuck with me the most:
You can make something out of nothing.
As in, you don't need a recipe to cook something, and you don't have to have a full pantry and fridge to get dinner on the table. My mom is the queen of pulling scraps from the fridge and freezer and seemingly magically turning them into a cohesive, family-approved meal. If she had a dollar for every time one of her kids asked her, "What's for dinner?" she'd definitely be a millionaire, and what I didn't know growing up was that a lot of times she didn't even know what was for dinner as she began making dinner. But lo and behold, she'd make it happen. She'd usually aim to combine some type of protein with a starch and a vegetable, even if that meant throwing everything in a dish and baking it in the oven. My dad has lovingly and hilariously named these creations "bakes." "Oooh, what do we have here, a cheesy chicken bake?" he'll say if he peers into the oven and sees a casserole dish filled with various unidentifiable ingredients. And you know what? They were always delicious.
Thanks to my mom's ability to improvise, my family rarely resorted to takeout and instead had much healthier and more budget-friendly dinners, and I think this is a mantra that everyone can benefit from. While sometimes you might quite literally have nothing to work with, there are staples you should always have on hand that make this "no recipe" cooking method a lot easier: eggs (you can put anything in an omelet), chicken (keep it in the freezer and defrost the day you plan to use it), pasta (the ultimate blank-canvas ingredient), and frozen vegetables (no need to always buy fresh at the risk of letting them go bad). Also, save everything (that quarter of an onion will come in handy the next time you sauté garlic or want to add caramelized onions to something).
So now whenever I open my fridge and see a few random jars, some partially wilted spinach, and leftover chicken, I don't think, "time to go out." I think, "what would my mom make?"
