9 Things People With Clean Houses Do Every Day
Find yourself feigning excuses for why your friend can't pop up to your place to use the bathroom before the movie? Ever turn beet red with embarrassment when unexpected guests enter your home? It sounds like you have a messy house.
Imagine how much more enjoyable life would be if you were one of those perpetually tidy people whose homes could be company-ready with 15 minutes' notice. We wanted to turn our clean fantasies into a reality, so we researched the daily habits of people with clean houses - note the word "habits." What we learned is that it takes more than a few deep cleanings to achieve this status of cleaning goddess. It takes daily work and preparation to keep your house in a constant state of near perfection.
Read on to discover the nine habits people with clean houses do every day, and how you can adopt them to get out of the disaster zone you've been living in.
- Make Their Bed
-
Before you leave the house in the morning (or better yet, before you leave the bedroom), make your bed. If you're in a rush, pull the comforter up to the pillows, and smooth it out to create the semblance of a made bed. This simple act creates a sense of order in your bedroom and sets your day off on a productive note that's likely to carry through.
- Empty the Dishwasher in the Morning
-
Get the dishwasher emptied and ready to go for the day. Doing this in the morning lays the groundwork for an easy dinner cleanup at night and keeps dishes from stacking up in the sink throughout the day.
- Do a Load of Laundry Every Day
-
Washing clothes on a regular schedule keeps the dirty pile from becoming overwhelming (not to mention, ensures that you'll never run out of clean underpants). Those with big families prefer doing it every morning, but if you live alone, doing laundry a couple of predetermined days a week should suffice.
- Use Baskets to Organize Things
-
When there's a place for everything to go, it's easier to keep everything in its place. Scatter cute baskets throughout the house to corral your things, and add shelves to hold the big pieces.
- Don't Procrastinate
-
When a box is delivered, unpack the goodies inside, and discard the packaging immediately. The same goes for dealing with spills or messes. The longer you wait, the harder they become to deal with.
- Put Away Their Clothes From the Day
-
As tempting as it is to drop your clothes on the floor after a long day's work before slipping into your sweats, tidy people take the time to fold, hang, or place them in the hamper, as necessary. Do this, and your clothes and floor will both look better for it.
- Clean as They Go
-
You can dramatically minimize your mess by cleaning as you go. If you rinse the cutting board while the pasta is boiling or start loading the dishwasher while the chicken is baking, the bulk of the work will be done by the time you serve dinner.
- Never Go to Bed With a Dirty Kitchen
-
Resist the urge to climb directly into bed after a big meal. Take care of any and all kitchen cleanup that night - clean pots and pans, wipe down counters, etc. Not only will the mess harden and be smellier the next day (read: more challenging to clean), but waiting means that you'll have to spend your morning backtracking to make up for what you neglected the night before, instead of getting a head start on the day ahead.
- Plan Ahead
-
Whether it's picking out your outfit the night before or reviewing what cleaning products you need to restock before tackling the bathrooms that weekend, you can give yourself a jump on the day by planning ahead.

9 Things Robbers Look at When Canvassing Your Home
You've put heart, soul, and a lot of bucks into turning your house into a home. The last thing you want is for someone to break in and rob you. A home intruder is scary to even think about, but spending a few minutes of time recognizing and fixing ways your home is vulnerable can pay off big down the road.
Here are 9 ways you may be inadvertently making your home more attractive to thieves:
Rundown Front Door
Your front door is the first place burglars will look, and a dilapidated front door signals that your home is an easy target. A clean, painted front door gives the impression that the entire home is well-cared for and harder to breach.
Single Lock
Burglars look to see what kind of locks they'll have to navigate to enter, and when they see only the standard cylinder lock they're more likely to have a go than if there's also a padlock visible. In short: doubling up on locks makes your door physically more difficult to break into and your home less appealing to burglars.
Enticing Trash
The discarded boxes and bags from all your big-ticket purchases are like advertisements to burglars of the valuables inside your home. Prevent thieves from getting as excited over your new flat screen TV box as you are with your new TV by keeping this type of garbage inside until trash pickup day.
Dark Exteriors
Burglars don't like to risk being seen, so when you create a barrier of light around your home using motion sensor activated and basic exterior lights, you're creating a barrier around your home through which they're not likely to penetrate. Pay special attention to vulnerable areas like front and back doors and walkways.
Welcoming Landscaping
When planted beneath windows, bushes and shrubs are not only pretty, but they're an obstacle to climbing into windows. Burglars are especially deterred by the kind of greenery that has thorns or makes loud snapping noises. For trees reaching up to second story windows, be sure to clean up lower branches so they can't function as a ladder.
Overflowing Mailbox
Piles of mail are a sign that you're out of town and primed for a robbery. If you're going away for a while, use the USPS's Request Hold Mail service to stop delivery while you're gone. For shorter periods, a neighbor will likely be glad to pick up your deliveries.
Visible Interiors
You don't want burglars to get a peek at all the goodies you have inside your home, so shut the curtains, pull the shades, put a giant houseplant in front of a street-facing window – do whatever you have to do to keep unwanted eyes out. Be especially mindful at night when the dark sky and lit interior combine to create a fishbowl effect in your home.
Empty House
Encountering the resident is way more than most burglars are bargaining for. If they think you're in the house, they're staying out of it, so make it look like someone's home by turning on a light or two and even leaving on a TV or radio to make some noise. For prolonged periods away, you can use electronic timers to turn them on and off automatically.
Nonexistent Alarm System
They take a bit of financial investment, but a quality alarm system is a huge burglar deterrent, and a necessary one if you live in a high-crime neighborhood. Do your research and pick a reputable alarm company – thieves know the bad and bogus alarm system signs – and consider high-tech options, such as alarms with a camera that allow you to monitor your home from anywhere.

5 Inexpensive Items That Make For Gorgeous Kitchen Backsplashes
The backsplash is by far the most fun design decision during a kitchen remodel - so why settle for standard tile or stone? Instead, turn an everyday collection into an unexpected backsplash display. The design secret here is the multiples: when small graphic items are arranged side by side, the result is a surprisingly cohesive, curated look. The best part? Not only will a DIY backsplash elevate you to Pinterest goddess status, but employing everyday items (instead of expensive marble or tile) will save you major renovation bucks, too. Win-win? We think so.
Read on for our favorite DIY kitchen backsplash ideas, and be sure to ask your local hardware store for installation tips before trying it at home.
Wine Corks
Memorialize your favorite Merlot by adhering the corks to a wet bar's backsplash in alternating horizontal and vertical pairs. Use the DIY project as an excuse to drink more vino (we won't tell anyone), or simply purchase used wine corks online. They're easy to find and usually super inexpensive.
Dominoes
Get your kitchen's game face on with dominoes. The classic black and white game pieces add a decidedly sophisticated touch when arranged in rows. Complement the look with the latest kitchen trend: dark gray cabinets and warm brass hardware.
Bottle Caps
Bottle caps, which look like colorful penny tile from afar, are right at home in the kitchen. Choose a color theme - only blue bottle caps, for example - or include all hues for the ultimate vibrant look. Enlist friends to collect, or buy bottle caps in bulk from Etsy sellers, like TorBearNC.
Coasters
Bar and restaurant coasters, bursting with fun fonts and graphic treatments, are an inexpensive way to replicate the look of ceramic tile but with an unexpected twist. Make a point to collect the coasters during travels, and you'll create a memory-filled scrapbook for your walls. Simply arrange the coasters as if you would square tiles and then cover them with a large glass plate for protection against cooking oils.
Plates
Channel your inner Antoni Gaudí and design a mosaic backsplash using smashed dinner plates and platters. Vintage varieties are a dime a dozen at antique stores and flea markets, usually costing a mere few dollars each. Pile the dinnerware in a cloth bag (to avoid flying pieces) before breaking them with a hammer. Then glue the roughly one-inch pieces to your walls in a pattern or at random.
How to Turn a Cheap Ikea Bed Into a Modern Work of Art
Wanting to give her toddler daughter Zelda's room the same stylish contemporary aesthetic as the rest of her home without blowing the budget, Glitter and Bubbles blogger Corri McFadden decided to take matters into her own hands. She enlisted the help of her husband, and together they cut and attached hot pink acrylic panels to the head and footboard of an Ikea Malm Bed. The bed's clean, white design was the perfect backdrop for the modern acrylic panel and its low price kept the entire project under budget. The results look straight out of a design magazine. Take a look at the finished product below and head to Glitter and Bubbles for the full tutorial.
Study Finds Horrifying Link Between Scented Candles and Health Problems
Fall and Winter home decor wouldn't be complete without scented candles. Trust us, we love them as much as the next person (we even tested all the best pumpkin spice candles!), but recently discovered information has us seriously considering tossing them all out. Woman's Day and The Daily Mail have published results from multiple studies that link scented candles to major health risks - as serious as lung damage and birth defects.
What's even worse is that candles aren't the only culprits; scented aerosols, gels, and plug-ins are among "an array of hazardous substances which may cause lung damage and tumors, interfere with our hormones, and cause such lifelong problems as asthma," The Daily Mail reports. The scariest part? You don't even have to light the candles to be affected because "simple evaporation" can release the pollutants into the air. Common ingredients in many products are chemicals that you probably can't pronounce and that your body definitely doesn't want; these chemicals can even change the structure of your DNA.
Expectant mothers might want to be especially cautious of the types of candles they bring into their homes. Some studies' evidence suggests that hazardous substances can affect hormones, and in turn, cause problems with babies' hormonal development. Popular brand SC Johnson, which makes Glade products, is just one company that has faced backlash for its reportedly harmful synthetic ingredients, but the company directly addresses this information on its site and assures it uses "the most comprehensive database worldwide of safety evaluations for fragrance materials."
Of course, no study or statement is all-encompassing, but this information is unsettling at the very least. Will you think twice about your favorite scented candles, or is this habit just not worth giving up?

From Trap Doors to Hidden Nooks, Jessica Biel's Au Fudge Is Every Kid's Dream Space
Son Silas wasn't the only thing Jessica Biel has been busy with the past year. The actress launched her latest project, Au Fudge, in March. It's a West Hollywood gourmet restaurant meets local decor and specialty food marketplace with a twist: there are numerous accommodations for children. To create a place as innovative as Au Fudge, where families can enjoy a night out together, the kids entertained and the parents relaxed, Jessica and her cofounders had to put serious thought into the design of the space. They added oodles of unfussy kid-friendly details while keeping the overall aesthetic chic and upscale. MyDomaine recently took an exclusive tour of Au Fudge, and it shared a few of its favorite shots with us. Here's What Your Favorite TV Characters' Apartments Would Look Like IRL
While it's long been contested that Carrie Bradshaw would not be able to afford that walk-in closet in New York City given her journalist's salary, an illustrator's recent series proved just how unrealistic our favorite fictional residences really are.
For quite some time, artist Iñaki Aliste Lizarralde has been watching popular sitcoms and movies - from The Golden Girls to Up - to accurately map out and draw the floor plans for the homes and apartments where most of the action occurs. The end result is pretty incredible. For example, we had no idea just how sprawling Will Truman and Grace Adler's apartment is on Will & Grace! Their square footage makes Holly Golightly's apartment look tiny.
Keep reading for an interesting inside look at all those homes you thought you knew so well.

The 3 Things You Must Agree to Before Being Cast on Fixer Upper
Have you ever fantasized about having the talented husband-and-wife duo Chip and Joanna Gaines help you transform an affordable dump in an ideal location into a styled-to-perfection vintage American dream home? The reality of appearing on Fixer Upper, it turns out, is a tad more complicated than meets the HGTV viewer's eye. If you're seriously considering going on Fixer Upper, here's what you must be willing to do . . .
- Buy a House in Waco, TX.
-
Chip and Joanna are proud locals, living in and operating Magnolia Homes out of Waco. They want to keep their Fixer Upper clients local, so you must agree to house hunt within 40 miles of the city.
- Shell Out a Minimum of $30,000 For Renovations.
-
While a reno budget of $30,000 will get your application looked at by Fixer Upper's producers, they specify that the amount of money you can contribute should be reflective of the amount of work you need done; in other words, if you're looking for a complete overhaul, get ready to cough up even more dough.
- Give Up Design Control.
-
Yes, you read that correctly. All you get is an initial discussion with the designer to share your preferences for your home. After that, there is no further contact and all final determinations about style and what and where things are installed are up to the designer and the producers. Gulp. Still want to be on Fixer Upper?
6 Secrets Real Estate Agents Know About Kitchen Remodels
So you're finally ready to renovate your dated kitchen, but unsure what upgrades will see a return when it comes time to sell. Katharine Tuckerman, a seasoned real estate agent in Manhattan's Upper East Side with Brown Harris Stevens, says that this room can make or break a deal, because buyers know they will "spend all their time in the kitchen!"
First and foremost, "people really lean towards light and bright kitchens," she says. And although there are so many fun opportunities for customization and colors in a remodel, Katharine confirms the adage that "a neutral palate is always a safe call." Of course, it's not quite that simple! While buyers often anticipate "making minor adjustments," some specific design choices have major selling power, or will just make the space "show much better," as Katharine puts it. From countertops and cabinetry to lighting and appliances, she gives us her winning formula for a kitchen renovation that will rock the MLS!

We Didn't Realize Flip or Flop's Tarek and Christina Had So Much to Be Grateful For
Every Flip or Flop fan knows that Tarek and Christina El Moussa can turn even the most hopeless-seeming disaster into a profitable success, but they may not know that the HGTV couple's triumphant spirit extends beyond dilapidated homes to harrowing medical situations.
In 2013, registered nurse Ryan Read was tuning in to a Flip or Flop marathon when she noticed a suspicious lump on Tarek's throat. She sent the show's production company an email with her concerns, which prompted Tarek to get the lump checked out. It turned out that the lump, along with other ailments like a cough they had been attributing to Tarek's heavy smoking, was actually a symptom of stage 2 thyroid cancer. The parents of young daughter Taylor were scared but moved forward with signature determination.
Within a month, Tarek had his thyroid and lymph nodes removed and was undergoing iodine radiation. The treatments were not only unpleasant, they also derailed the couple's plans for a second child. Determined to grow their family, Christina underwent in vitro treatments. After one failed attempt and another that sadly ended in miscarriage, their son was conceived. "I had to do one full week in bed. For 13 weeks after that, I couldn't go for a walk and couldn't lift anything over a gallon of milk," Christina told People. "We did everything we could to make sure this one worked."
This August, nearly two years after the diagnosis and a year and a half of being cancer free, the couple welcomed baby Brayden James. We have no doubt the holidays will be extra meaningful in the El Moussa house this year.
Want more Christina and Tarek? Check out season four of Flip or Flop airing Tuesdays at 9pm ET on HGTV and learn 18 things you probably didn't know about the couple here.

Oprah's New Mansion in the Mountains Is a Sight to Behold
Whatever Oprah does, she does it big - whether it's a Christmas giveaway or the purchase of a new house. We're talking about the latter in this case, because she just purchased an extraordinarily lavish home for $14 million in the ski resort town of Telluride, CO. The 8,700-square-foot lodge has everything you can imagine and then some (seriously, it has a wine mine inside . . . aka a 56-foot-long wine cellar that holds 1,600 bottles of wine).
According to Zillow, the furnished, five-bedroom home also came with a sauna, a seven-person hot tub, and a "faux mining car that connects the mansion with a nearby ski trail." It's a tough life when your choice for the day is skiing next to your house or cozying up by a beautiful fireplace with wine you grabbed from your personal wine cellar. Take a Tour of Prince's Mysterious Paisley Park
Prince's famed Paisley Park in Chanhassen, MN, was the first of its kind – a compound containing two recording studios, a dance rehearsal hall, a performance space, offices, and even living accommodations all under one roof, all for one artist. He could record his music, film his movies, and store his costumes here without ever having to go outside. Tragically, it is also where Prince's body was found. Architect Bret Thoeny was tapped by Prince to build Paisley Park in 1983, spent nearly three years building the structure, and today is opening up about Prince's sacred space, so long shrouded in mystery. Check out CNN's video above to get a tour of Paisley Park and see where Prince created his music and spent his time.

This Instagram Account Perfectly Parodies Volunteer Workers in Africa
In the age of social media and living for the "likes," what photo is more popular than one of a volunteer worker in Africa or another Third World country? Whether you hate or love those photos, one Instagram account is trying to spark a conversation about it and the entire volunteer industry.
Barbie Savior is an Instagram account created by two anonymous white 20-something-year-olds that is similar to Hipster Barbie and is meant mock and poke fun at volunteers who travel to Africa to "save" people there. That concept is also known as the white savior complex. Many of these volunteers then take photos with people or places in these countries, usually celebrating how much they are helping, rather than looking at any of the bigger issues.
The two creators, former white saviors themselves, started this account as a way to get the conversation about this topic going. "We were never as 'savioresque' as Barbie Savior, but we did things back in our white savior days that we regret," they told The Huffington Post. "The attitude that Africa needs to be saved from itself, by Westerners, can be traced back to colonialism and slavery. It's such a simplified way to view an entire continent." The creators are prepared for any type of reaction to the account but tell The Huffington Post that most of it so far has been OK.
Of course, the idea of this account is not to shame those who do go and volunteer in countries. Rather, Barbie Savior is here to remind everyone that these photos - whether it's a selfie with a child or a reflective quote that is entirely about yourself rather than the situation - is problematic. "Barbie Savior, we hope, is an entertaining jumping off point for some very real discussions, debates, and resolves," they said to The Huffington Post.
Check out some of the photos of Barbie Savior and see why the account's already racked up more than 24,000 followers.
Who Knew Man Boobs Could Save So Many Women's Lives?
Showing women's breasts and - heaven forbid - a nip slip on social media is a huge no-no, and aside from mothers' photos of breastfeeding being censored, showing nipples in a breast self-exam is apparently not OK either. Since one in eight women will suffer from breast cancer, and early detection is crucial for beating this disease, it's imperative to show women the correct way to check themselves.
So an ad agency from Buenos Aires got creative and decided to use man boobs instead of lady boobs to show women over 25 how to check their breasts and to encourage them to do so regularly. #ManBoobs4Boobs cleverly works around not being able to show women's breasts and also sends the message that this is an issue men need to think about as well. It may be hard to watch this lovely woman fondling this man's nipples, but it sure got your attention, didn't it? Now go check yourself! And share this video with the ladies you love to remind them to do breast self-exams as well.

8 Things You Need to Do Before Selling Your iPhone
Ready to trade in your old iPhone for the new one? Before you do, take a look at this checklist to make sure you've deleted all important data from your iPhone. Don't leave anything behind!
- Back up your iPhone.
- Remove photos from Camera Roll. Connect the device to your computer and open Image Capture or iPhoto. Select all photos and then click Import All. In iPhoto, choose to "delete photos from your iPhone" after importing. In Image Capture, if the "Delete Items After Downloading" option no longer appears, try this: turn off "Photos" in iCloud on your Mac and iPhone, then restart both devices, and you should see the delete button.
- Turn iMessage off. Open the Settings app > Messages > iMessage > switch to off.
- Turn FaceTime off. Open the Settings app > FaceTime > switch to off.
- Disable your iCloud account. Open the Settings app > iCloud > tap "Sign Out."
- Log out of Apple ID. Open the Settings app >App and iTunes Stores > tap Apple ID and sign out.
- Restore to factory settings. Open the Settings app > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Unregister your device at supportprofile.apple.com.
- Call your carrier and ask them to disassociate the device from your account.
An important tip! Whatever you do, don't manually delete contacts, photo streams, calendars, or reminders while logged in to your iCloud account. This will also delete the content from the iCloud servers and your iCloud-connected devices (like your iPad or laptop).
Another important tip! If your phone accidentally runs out of battery during the "restore to factory settings" step, use iTunes to erase data. Connect the device to your computer, then restore the backup. Connect your phone to power, go to Settings app > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings again.
OK, but seriously, this is the last important tip! You can erase your device remotely. If you set up Find My iPhone, sign into icloud.com/#find, then click on All Devices and select the phone you want to erase. In the info window, click "Erase iPhone." You'll need to enter your Apple ID password.
6 Game of Thrones Stars React to the Shocking Melisandre Twist
In addition to revealing whether or not Jon Snow is actually dead, the sixth season premiere of Game of Thrones delivers a major twist in the last few minutes of the episode: Melisandre is ancient. The redheaded priestess, played by the gorgeous Carice van Houten, strips out of her robe and takes off her glowing ruby necklace, transforming into a very, VERY old woman. "I was really happy when I read that we were going to reveal that this year. . . . It makes her immediately more vulnerable but also more wise and even more mysterious," van Houten told Entertainment Weekly. "That's why she was able to say, 'This is just a small war, it's all relative compared to the big war we're going to face.' [Her age] makes everything even more meta."
The whole reveal is shocking, to say the least, and fans aren't the only ones who thought so. Keep reading to find out how the cast of Game of Thrones reacted to seeing van Houten's intense old lady makeup and prosthetics and what they think this development will mean for the series as a whole.

The Canadian twins have been recording for more than a decade but have consistently written lyrics about unrequited love, loneliness, and crushes their entire career. Alexis Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser's Brooklyn Home Is a Minimalist's Dream
Alexis Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser have officially sold their incredibly chic Brooklyn Heights duplex for $1.32 million - a slight discount from the original $1.56 million asking price.
With its impressively high ceilings, the one bedroom, two bathroom pad is the penthouse floor of a stunning, baroque-style building from the late 19th century. While we already know Kartheiser has some pretty great taste, given the look of his former Hollywood cabin, this apartment has a slightly more modern, minimalist feel that's made cozier by the use of packed bookcases and varying works of art. Now that we think about it, this place kind of looks like how Rory Gilmore's apartment might have looked had she ended up with Jess. (We're still holding out hope for those two.)
