Trump Is Reportedly "Supportive of Efforts to Improve" Background Checks For Gun Purchases

On Feb. 14, the United States was heartbroken when the 18th school shooting of 2018 took place at a high school in Parkland, FL. Nikolas Cruz, a former Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student, killed a total of 17 people, injuring as many as 14 others. Now, less than a week later, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters that Trump is supportive of efforts to change background check procedures.
According to ABC News, Trump spoke to Texas Sen. John Cornyn about a bill Cornyn introduced last year that details efforts to change background check procedures. "While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the president is supportive of efforts to improve the federal background check system," Sanders said. The bill is called the Fix NICS Act, or the Fix National Instant Criminal Background Check System Act. The legislation is co-sponsored by gun-control advocate Democrat Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy. It calls for updates to the background check system to make sure that federal and state agencies have current and accurate information about people prohibited from buying firearms.
Trump has not openly said that we shouldn't be talking about gun control, but when recently asked about it, he reportedly ignored the questions. While visiting Florida shooting victims at the Broward Health North medical center, the New York Daily News reports that someone shouted out a question about gun control, and Trump simply walked into another room. With the pressure mounting for Congress to take action, it's only a matter of time before Trump is forced to address it.
