Get Your Rear in Gear With This Butt-Lifting Workout
The following post was originally featured on Fit Bottomed Girls and written by Karen, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Fitness.
The right pair of jeans or yoga pants can do wonders for the backside, but unless you're planning on sportin' that attire to the beach this summer it's time to get your rear in gear. All you need for this double whammy of a butt-lifting workout is a treadmill and a jamming set of tunes.
Once swimsuit season rolls around, the only thing holding up that butt is gonna be your very own gluteal muscles!
How To Do It
The following 20-minute workout is low impact, but it targets the glutes like crazy and offers a significant calorie burn to help take a little jiggle out of that wiggle.
- Begin your treadmill workout with a three-minute warm-up.
- At the four-minute mark increase your speed to a brisk walking pace (don't get crazy; pick a speed that you can maintain for the duration of the workout) and adjust the incline to a moderate gradient. Do not hold on to the handrails!
- Each passing minute, increase the incline up one notch, but maintain your current speed. If you can't sustain the level of exertion, don't - repeat - don't grab the handrails! Instead, decrease your speed and forge ahead.
- Stay the course, increasing the incline incrementally until you reach the 18-minute mark.
- For the last two minutes, drop the incline and slow your pace to cool down.
Natural Resistance
The key to this low-impact, butt-lifting workout is not speed, but gravity. Each time you adjust the angle of incline on the treadmill, the body recruits more glute muscle fibers to make it up the hill. Even at a reduced rate of speed, your glutes will be screaming, your breath will be labored and your heart rate will skyrocket.
Tips
Not holding on to the handrails is key, but if you can't manage try holding on for 15 seconds at a time.
Resist the temptation to bend forward at the waist. A little slope is natural, but you shouldn't look like you are walking into a head wind. Keep your shoulders upright and your back straight to fully engage the glutes.
Let's hear it for high butts! I do this speedy workout three times a week! -Karen
The Swedish Olympic Team Helped Design H&M’s New Fitness Line
Does H&M ever fail us? Never, it seems. Everyone's go-to fast-fashion label announced its foray into activewear back in February, and now the brand has announced its next collection. Teaming up with the Swedish Olympic team, H&M's latest athletic line is technical and definitely not lacking in style. Named the For Every Victory collection, the line features quick-drying and breathable gear in a neutral color palette. Added bonus: the line is also sustainable since the clothes are made from recycled polyester. The For Every Victory line will hit stores July 21, but we've got a preview of it here.

Dietitians Say This Is How Much Fruit Should Be in Your Smoothie
One of the fastest, healthiest, easiest breakfasts you can whip up and enjoy on the go is a deliciously cold and creamy smoothie. If you're worried about it being loaded with sugars and carbs, certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition, and Stephanie Clarke and Willow Jarosh of C&J Nutrition, registered dietitians and authors of Healthy, Happy Pregnancy Cookbook, want to assure you that you can enjoy a fruit smoothie for breakfast; you just have to be mindful of a few things.
Stephanie and Willow say that "while the sugar from fruit is different in that it brings along fiber, vitamins, and minerals, too much sugar in any form can cause a steep rise in blood sugar levels that is then followed by a steep crash." Leslie agrees when she says, "an all-fruit smoothie wouldn't be the best idea, since it's a large dose of sugar coming at you at one time with not a lot of protein or healthy fats to satiate you and balance out the meal." Aim for just two cups or fewer of fruit (or two servings) - that will help keep your carbs to between 50 and 60 grams. Choose fruits that are lower in sugar such as raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries.
Your smoothie should also offer fiber (five to 10 grams), so add veggies like spinach, kale, or broccoli, and nuts and seeds like almonds, flaxmeal, or chia seeds. These will help make your smoothie take longer to digest and keep you feeling fuller longer. Protein is also essential (10 to 15 grams), so go for tofu, beans, nuts, seeds, plain yogurt, and dairy-free milks. Protein powders are also an easy way to get a large amount of protein; just check the labels to make sure they're low in sugar. And of course you can't forget the healthy fats such as avocado, nuts, or seeds. These will also help to keep that full and satisfied feeling longer.
Another thing to keep in mind is not to throw added sweeteners into your blender. Honey, agave, and maple syrup aren't necessary since the fruit will sweeten your smoothie naturally. But if you absolutely love having those added sweeteners, stick to no more than one teaspoon. Skip the vanilla-flavored milk alternatives since those pack on extra unnecessary sugars, and go for unsweetened milks instead. Fruit juice and coconut water also add sugars, so if you like to add those to your smoothies, stick to no more than a quarter-cup and then use a little less fruit.
See? You don't have to fear the sugar in your smoothies! As long as the only source of sugar being added is fruit and you're sticking to the two-cup maximum, you can feel good sipping down whatever concoction you create.
Here are some recipes that are have fewer that 20 grams of sugar:
- Berry Cinnamon Cashew Smoothie: 9.5 grams
- Banana Cream Overnight Oats Smoothie: 17.8 grams
- Strawberry-Watermelon Hydrating Smoothie: 13.6 grams
- Low-Calorie Chocolate Almond Smoothie: 1.8 grams
- "Sweet Potato Pie" Smoothie: 6.7 grams
- Banana Protein Smoothie: 7.8 grams
- Vegan Chocolate Milkshake Smoothie: 15.8 grams
- Avocado Strawberry Grape Clear-Skin Smoothie: 16.5 grams
Low-Calorie Meringues - and They're Vegan
Aquafaba is taking the world by storm, especially the vegan culinary world. It's essentially chickpea water, the liquid left over after you strain out the beans. Sounds odd, we know. But aquafaba can be whipped into a consistency like whipped cream or egg whites. Watch this video and see just how to turn chickpea water into sweet, tasty, low-calorie meringues.

Why Kettlebell Workouts Burn So Many Calories
There's a reason so many people love kettlebell training - after all, who doesn't want a total-body resistance and cardio workout that only takes half an hour? And even more surprising, an American Council on Exercise (ACE) study recently found that the average person can burn 400 calories in just 20 minutes with a kettlebell. That's an amazing 20 calories a minute, or the equivalent of running a six-minute mile!
What makes the workout so effective, especially when compared with traditional weights like barbells or dumbbells? "You're moving in different planes of movement," says Laura Wilson, director of programming for KettleWorX. "Instead of just going up and down, you're going to move side to side and in and out, so it's much more functional. It's like you move in real life: kettlebells simulate that movement, unlike a dumbbell."
As a result, Laura says, you end up using more of your stabilizer muscles than traditional weight training, which translates into an increased calorie burn and a killer workout for your core. All this makes kettlebell training not only great for weight loss but also for improving fitness level: an ACE study found that eight weeks of kettlebell training two times a week improved aerobic capacity by almost 14 percent and abdominal strength by 70 percent in the participants. "You're recruiting so many more muscles than you would with traditional training," Laura explains.
If you're ready to jump on the kettlebell train, don't just grab a weight and start swinging. Proper form is essential for ensuring you stay injury-free when performing kettlebell exercises. Start with light kettlebells, and visit a certified kettlebell trainer (check your gym to see if classes are offered) to learn the right way to train - then check out all of our kettlebell exercises here!

The 8-Minute Full-Body Workout You Can Do Anywhere
The following post was originally featured on Fit Bottomed Girls and written by Jenn, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Fitness.
Obviously the theme this week is eight. Eight years … eight lessons … and today … an 8-minute workout that'll kick your ass as much or as little as you want it to. It's full-body and requires no equipment besides a watch or a timer, a place for you to get sweaty and a good attitude. But you already have the good attitude down, right? Now let's do this!
This 8-minute workout is broken down into 16 different 30-second intervals - including moves to warm you up and cool you down some. For each interval, you can take it as hard or as easy as you want. If you want to make it a true HIIT session, then really push yourself to do as many reps as you can of each move per interval. If you're wanting to take it easier (say, you're doing this over your lunch break and don't have access to a shower), then take your intensity down a notch. It's up to you! No matter how fast you do it, you'll be working your entire body - and getting strength and cardio work in at the same time. Plus, we think it's totally fun. And, only 8 minutes, so totally doable!
1. March in place. Think about what you want to get out of this workout today.
2. Jog in place. Think about why you're doing this workout today.
3. Jumping jacks. Be sure to reach all the way up and touch your hands overhead.
4. Squats. If you need a refresher on proper squat form, read this. And if squats are too easy, try jump squats.
5. Mountain climbers. Really try to get your feet up and near your hands.
6. Plank on your hands. Oh, the fun is just getting started in plank.
7. Side plank to the right. If you need to drop down to a knee, that's totally cool.
8. Side plank to the left. Again, feel free to modify down to that knee.
9. Reverse plank. Keep those hips lifted! Almost done with the planks, we swear.
10. Plank on your forearms. If you need a break, come into down dog, and then get right back in it as soon as you can.
11. Dance party. After all of those planks, you deserve a 30-second impromptu dance party, don't ya think?
12. Forward lunges. Don't let that knee go past your front toe for proper alignment.
13. Jumping lunges. If these are too intense, try backward lunges.
14. Burpees. You're in the home stretch! After this, we start cooling down. So give this one your all!
15. Left to right side touches. Bring that heart rate down. Think about what you got out of your workout today.
16. Big inhales and exhales as you reach your arms over ahead and back down again. Think about your why again. And then feel really freakin' proud of yourself.
What was your favorite move of all of those? I have a weird fondness for mountain climbers, but I always love a good impromptu dance party. -Jenn

11 Things I Wish I'd Known Before I Got Invisalign
I'm 26 years old, and for years, every time I see a celebrity or a person crack open a mouth full of perfectly straight teeth, I can't help but feel envious and a little upset that my teeth don't look that way. Even after braces, my teeth have never been flawless. I'm plagued with an open bite. This means 20 out of 24 of my teeth have significant space between them, even when I bite down. A decade ago, orthodontists told me I would have to get a second round of braces and jaw surgery to fully correct the situation. I put it off for years, because worse than crooked teeth was the thought of having surgery and braces (again)!
However, this year, my orthodontist recommended an alternative treatment, Invisalign, that had a good chance of straightening my teeth and correcting my bite without surgery. Unlike braces, which use metal wires and brackets to straighten teeth, Invisalign moves teeth with a series of custom-made aligners (aka retainers) made from clear plastic, so they are far less noticeable than braces. I jumped on board right away, but I didn't do as much research as I probably should have. Though I'm only a month into my Invisalign program - and am really happy with the results so far! - here are some of the things I wish I'd known before I took the plunge.
- You might receive more attachments than you are expecting. Recent Invisalign procedures may include attachments, or enamel-colored ridges that stick to your teeth like braces brackets. These attachments click into the Invisalign aligners to help the teeth move more effectively. Without the aligners in, the attachment bumps are virtually invisible. But with the aligners in, it looks like you have clear braces. My orthodontist warned me that I would have two attachments, but I ended up with 20. So, most of the day, I look like I'm wearing braces.
- Recommended wear time is 22 hours. I don't know what I was thinking . . . I guess I figured I could leave the aligners at home when going to a party or out to dinner. But nope. I keep them in unless I'm eating, and I don't leave home without packing an aligner case along with a travel-size toothbrush.
- You may lose weight. Since the wear time is 22 hours, that leaves two hours to eat three meals a day. It's pretty ambitious, but I do my best to, because it really beats trying to pry the aligners off my teeth more than necessary. The aligners are supertight and especially hard to remove if teeth are sore. While you can always take the aligners out for snacks, I've found it's a pain to remove the aligners and rebrush the teeth more than three times a day. Despite my attempts to pack in the calories at each meal (I'll have a smoothie, omelet, and yogurt for breakfast, etc.), I still am hungry all the time. I lost a little weight my first month, but I've returned to my normal weight after introducing a protein smoothie to every meal.
- Kiss lipstick goodbye. Colored lip gloss and lipsticks are a thing of the past. They easily stick to the aligners and the attachments. Clear lip balm and gloss are OK, but they can sometimes leave a waxy residue on the aligners. These days, I'm all about applying dramatic eye makeup to draw attention away from my mouth.
- No more manicures. The aligners are nearly impossible to remove without the help of your nails, so unless you're OK with chipped nails, stick to buffing your digits over painting them.
- Kissing is awkward. Yep, there is no avoiding the giant plastic device all up and around your mouth, and it's definitely a mojo quencher. Some people on the Internet claim Invisalign killed their love life, but I think that's a little extreme. It helps to have a significant other who is cool with your retainer mouth. It also helps to try to factor in some of those freebie minutes with your lover.
- You'll brush your teeth a dozen times a day. All right, maybe more like six, but it feels like a dozen. Plaque and food particles can get in the way of the teeth moving plus can lead to some seriously stanky breath and cavities. As a result, it's best to brush your teeth after eating anything. I use three different types of toothpaste and toothbrushes, since I have to stash them at home, at work, and in my purse. At home, I use Nimbus, a supersoft toothbrush, with Tom's of Maine Whole Care Toothpaste. At work, I use more aggressive products to get the teeth superclean and minty: Oral-B Pro-Health All-in-One Toothbrush (it's like a massage chair for your teeth and gums) and Arm & Hammer Advance White Toothpaste. Lastly, for my purse, I have a crummy, generic travel-size toothbrush (it gets the job done) with a travel-size version of Colgate Optic White Toothpaste. I floss with Oral-B Glide. I don't use mouthwash - the sweet residue sticks inside the aligners, and if it's blue, it could potentially stain the teeth.
- The attachments stain really easily. I have seen it so many times - my coffee- and tea-drinking friends who didn't stick to a regimented tooth brushing habit ended up staining their attachments. The practically invisible composite begins to look like orange corn kernel pieces stuck all over their teeth. Yuck! As a result, every cup of coffee or tea must be immediately followed by a teethbrushing.
- Cold water only. That being said, while wearing Invisalign, you can only drink cold water and maybe some clear sparkling water. Hot tea will stain and warp the aligners. Sugary and alcoholic drinks will lead to plaque buildup. I even attempted to test the waters with a glass of white wine, and it stained the aligners immediately. Darn!
- Whitening is not an option. Especially if you have attachments in place, whitening is not an option until the Invisalign treatment is complete. However, brushing your teeth often and avoiding stain-causing beverages will perk up your enamel a bit.
- There's a "refinement period." I thought I'd be done after 40 trays, until my sister said, "Oh no, honey. After that, you'll have a set of refinement aligners to fix any stubborn teeth." So basically, after the initial set of aligners are complete, Invisalign will create another set of refinement aligners to correct any slightly off teeth. Ugh, so my treatment has no foreseeable end in sight.
Despite all the cons, I'm committed to seeing the treatment out, even if it takes a few years. I've already noticed a difference in my bite (I can chew with six molars now! Woo!), and my teeth have definitely started to straighten. I've gotten over being self-conscious about my Invisalign, and I smile bigger than ever, even with the aligners in. At the end of the day, I know I'm taking action toward having the perfect teeth I've always envied, and that feels like it's worth the sacrifices.
The Lip Gloss Bible: 3 Formulas You Need This Summer
Most of us can consider lip gloss as the first makeup product we were allowed to wear, right? They sold them at Limited Too and were harmless: the sparkly, gooey finish was relatively transparent. If anything, it looked like leftover Kool-Aid on the lips with a high-shine finish. But as we've grown, so has lip gloss!
From subtle shades to major drama, there are a variety of finishes to choose from, as well different formulas you can use to achieve the look. Lip oils are trending because of their skin care benefits and light wash of color; lipstick sheers might not have as much of a wet finish, but they give the lips a little shine with the ability to define the lips, too. And OG lip glosses have gotten upgraded to products that can highlight and enhance your pout and can even be as opaque as your favorite lipsticks.
Check out some of my favorites that are featured in the video, and let me know your go-to gloss in the comments!

Practice This Shimmering Smoky Eye For Your Next Night Out
A fierce beauty look for a dinner date or girls' night out doesn't have to involve a vampy lipstick color. Sometimes, all you need to stun is a deep smoky eye, flawless complexion, and a kissable pout.
On YouTube, Jaclyn Hill shows off her favorite evening look, which consists of those basic elements. She starts her tutorial by priming and concealing her lids to create a clean base for her makeup. Then using a variety of neutral eye shadow colors and glitter, she creates a shimmering-to-dark ombré eyelid. The key to Jaclyn's bold eyes is simply using a dense-haired brush to apply dark color and a longer, wispier brush for lighter hues.
When applying the deepest shade of your look, Jaclyn stresses that the easiest way to avoid harsh application is to pat the shade onto the outer corner of your eyelids and then blend it out with a fluffy brush. This will ensure that your makeup doesn't show up in patches.
She goes on to complete her look with a bold cat eye using Maybelline Eye Studio gel liner ($10) and a glowing complexion courtesy of the Becca X Jaclyn Hill Champagne Collection Face Palette ($52). Her finished style is perfect for making a subtle statement and can be easily adjusted with different lipstick and eye shadows to reflect your personal style. Watch along to practice before your next girls' night.
21 Images That Prove the Stunning Beauty of North Korean Women
Photographer Mihaela Noroc has been backpacking from continent to continent for the past two years to document the diversity of women around the world. She's journeyed from Myanmar to Chile and everywhere in between for her project The Atlas of Beauty. The last destination on her tour was North Korea. While we know about the huge monuments to Kim Jong-un and the drab olive uniforms of the military, we've never heard or seen much about the women of the country.
"Women of North Korea are not familiar with global trends but this doesn't mean that they are not preoccupied by their look," declared Noroc. "While neighboring South Korea has the world's highest rate of cosmetic plastic surgeries, North Korean women live in a different world." Traditional colorful outfits are worn for celebrations and special occasions (or, if you're a newscaster, every night!), and high heels are popular. Though South Korean skin care rituals have made their way to the United States, we confess we're dying to know about these ladies' complexion regimens. Read on to see the flawless women of North Korea.
9 Ways to Take Fancy Fitness Classes For Virtually Nothing
It wasn't until I ditched my gym and quit running that I fully embraced my love of fitness. Before discovering intimate studio classes, exercise was forced agony, but these days you'll happily find me at SoulCycle, BurnSF, and my favorite local yoga studios. And despite how expensive boutique fitness can be, I've managed not to run up a huge credit card bill, in large part because I am thrifty - some friends may even call me cheap. Because of this, I've found some ways to save big time on what could be a pretty hefty financial commitment.
Related: 5 Ways to Save Money on Fitness
- Get connected on social: Grab your phone and start following the social media accounts of every studio you love. Besides getting a behind-the-scenes look at life there, you're privy to special deals and events. Fitness studios know that their followers on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram are loyalists, so it's a place where they'll share the love. I recently got a free SoulCycle class for wearing blue and yellow workout gear (Go Warriors!), based on a tip that my local studio shared on its Facebook account.
- Look for community classes: Whether it's a way to say thank you to the local 'hood or a way to introduce a new teacher, many studios (most often yoga) offer free community classes. Check a studio's weekly schedule to see when these pop up.
- Join a fitness class subscription service: If you're open to variety, think about joining a studio membership service like ClassPass or FitReserve, where you pay a flat monthly fee and get access to hundreds of local studios. Depending on the type of membership, you could be taking studio classes for as little as $10. Given that many of the classes offered on these services have drop-in rates of $30, you'll be getting a tremendous savings.
- Sign up for email: Yes, email can be annoying, but anyone who shops sales can tell you that newsletters are essential. Just as retail brands do, studios send out emails that often contain discounts, upcoming sales, or daily deals. I recently was able to buy a five-pack of yoga classes at my favorite studio for $50 thanks to a flash sale I learned about via email - that came out to be a 50 percent savings!
- Become a member: If you find that you're falling for a specific studio, stop the pay-as-you-go madness and pony up for a membership. The cost may seem steep at first, but you will save money in the long run. As an example, The Bar Method San Francisco charges $185 for a monthly membership, and its drop-in rate is $28. If you take more than six classes a month, you're much better off becoming a member. You'll also find that studios tend to offer a discounted rate for new clients. The same Bar Method offers a "New Client Intro Rate" of $99 for the first month of membership.
- Buy in bulk: Along the same lines of getting a membership, consider buying bundled class packs from your favorite studios. They usually end up giving you a 5- to 20-percent savings and often don't expire.
- Scan daily deals sites: Sites like Groupon, Living Social, and Gilt City are great resources for finding discounts at boutique fitness studios. You'll most often find discounted monthly memberships or bundled class packs here. Savings can run upwards of 30 percent.
- Check a studio's website: Fitness studios that are less connected on social media still tend to offer deals but will do so on their website. Peruse your favorite studios' sites often and always check out a studio's page before you go for the first time. Many offer students their first class as a freebie if you register online with them.
- Make friends with everyone who works there: Don't force it or fake a relationship, but you'll be surprised how far friendliness can get you. Studios love their regulars and smiling faces! Very often they'll gift you with a free class as a way to let you know how much you're appreciated.
When to Eat Your Largest Meal During the Day If You're Trying to Lose Weight
When you're on a mission to lose weight, what you choose to eat needs to line up with your goals. However, according to Break the Weight founder and health coach Ricki Friedman, how and when you eat is just as crucial. If you tend to eat light all day and chow down on a large dinner, you might be standing in the way of your success.
According to Ricki, your largest meal of the day should fall between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. After a large midday meal, you have an opportunity to go for a walk, work out, or move in some capacity that will support your digestion, but after a large late dinner, people tend to sit down to relax and go to bed on a full stomach - not a good idea if you want to wake up full of energy with healthy digestion, said Ricki.
Related: The Easiest Way to Prevent Overeating
This plan may sound easy enough, but Ricki explained, "It's often more of an emotional challenge than a physical challenge for people to make dinner light. Most of us use dinner as an activity for us to do when we get home out of loneliness or boredom, so you'll need some structure or alternative activities to fall back on!" Ricki's number-one activity she suggests to clients? Take a 20-minute walk every night after dinner. An evening walk supports healthy digestion, takes your focus off of food, and gives you an opportunity to check in with your emotional state.
If you're not sure what constitutes a light dinner, Ricki's only hard-and-fast rule is to make it less than 400 calories. Here are four options she recommends to her clients:
- Four ounces of salmon with grilled veggies and half a sweet potato
- Vegetable or lentil soup
- Half a cup of quinoa with lots and lots of veggies
- Half a veggie or beef burger with grilled vegetables
"If you want something like pizza, only have one piece or two, and then take your nighttime walk. It's not about taking all the things you love away from yourself; it's about learning how to have them, so you can go to bed feeling good, light, and satisfied," said Ricki.

Amy Schumer's Fit Life: Her Trainer Dishes Details
Amy Schumer has been spreading body positivity, self-love, and confidence via social media - and we love it! She also spoke out this year about being comfortable and happy with with her "between a size six and an eight" frame (and mentioned that she is not plus size).
We talked to Amy's trainer, Harley Pasternak, who helped her get into shape for her role in Trainwreck. Harley worked with Amy so closely and was blown away by how active she is, even outside the training studio. "I'm very, very proud of her," he told us. "She transformed herself." Here are some fitness facts about Amy and how she stays healthy!
- She was an aerobics instructor in college. Amy has been into fitness for years! "She's amazing . . . people don't realize she's super fit!" said Harley. She was an aerobics instructor in college, and as Harley put it, "she will run circles around people."
- Her activity isn't just in the gym. "Amy lives by the idea 'strong in the gym, lean in life,'" said Harley. "She keeps her workout with us super brief and stays active through the rest of the day."
- She's always on the move. Amy forgoes getting a private car service and walks everywhere! "When she was training with us for Trainwreck, she put on her Fitbit and walked super far to the studio, walked to a cool hike, and then walked back to her hotel." Amy even works while she walks, rolling her calls while she goes from place to place. "She gets 15K steps done in the first half of her day and does a whole morning's worth of work. She's a busy woman. If she can do it, anyone can."
18 Iconic Celebrity Tweets That We've Been Blessed With in 2016
The beautiful thing about a social media platform like Twitter is, well, anything goes. This especially rings true in the celebrity world - the quick-fire nature of a tweet often gives stars a place to speak their minds immediately. Which . . . sometimes gets them in trouble. Sometimes it blows up into a whole ordeal, like when Kim Kardashian posted a totally nude Instagram photo that spurred lots of backlash and even more cries of support. Sometimes, it's a smaller thing, like Adele's brief but charming tweets about the Grammys. No matter what the content, though, these kinds of things are quite often very entertaining, and 2016 is no exception.
The Healthiest Ice Cream You Can Imagine
I think we can all agree that avocados are amazing. Tasty, full of healthy fats, and surprisingly high in fiber, avocados are incredibly versatile and improve just about any recipe. You can even replace butter with avocados in your baked goods. And you can make ice cream with avocados - it's so simple! Just watch now to learn how to make this creamy vegan treat at home.
This Is Exactly What Happens When You Drink Too Much Water (Spoiler: It's Not Good)
Now that we know the effects of not getting enough water, let's emphasize the balance here - don't go overboard with the H2O! Here's another installment of "keep a healthy balance so you don't ruin your body."
While drinking enough water is essential to weight loss, energy levels, glowing skin, and mitigated anxiety, going overboard on hydration can actually be harmful. Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O. said, "There is always the case of too much of a good thing. Some people are such water drinking devotees that they are aquaholics, resulting in overhydration."
Are you an aquaholic? If you're an endurance athlete or in training for an endurance event (like a marathon, for example), you might be at risk if you're obsessing over water - in rare cases, people have been known to die from overhydration-induced water intoxication. Dr. Calapai said that an increased thirst sensation can also be caused by uncontrolled diabetes, as well as certain medications and psychiatric conditions.
Here's how you know that you've gone past your limit.
Mild Symptoms of Overhydration
- Nausea and vomiting
- Headache
- Changes in mental state (confusion or disorientation)
- Bloating (you're retaining water!)
Severe Symptoms of Overhydration
If things progress (and you don't scale back or get treatment), overhydration can lead to dangerously low levels of sodium in the blood (doctors call it hyponatremia). This can cause supersevere symptoms.
- Muscle weakness, spasms, or cramps
- Seizures
- Unconsciousness
- Coma
- Death
How Can Overhydration Be Prevented?
- Weigh yourself. Dr. Capalai suggests that endurance athletes weigh themselves before and after a race to determine how much water they have lost and how much they need to replenish.
- Know your limits. One liter per hour is the maximum!
- Pace your hydration. Running a half or full marathon or competing in an endurance event? Hydrate properly before and during your exercise to avoid overhydration postevent. Sip, don't chug! For everyday water drinking, sip slowly, and often, to make sure your body feels hydrated and quenched, but your intake is paced.
- Balance with sports drinks. Again, don't overdo this one, but mixing in a sports drink to your hydration will help you replace electrolytes, sodium, and potassium - these things are lost in sweat, but not replaced with water. Dr. Calapai suggests choosing a low-sugar option, with about five grams per eight-ounce serving.
- Stay in tune with your body. Dr. Calapai said to keep an eye on the toilet: "Notice how much you pee - and its color - in the morning. It should be a copious amount and pale or clear."
- Talk to your doctor. Above anything, your doctor knows best. "If you experience excessive thirst or an overly strong urge to drink water, contact your doctor before you develop symptoms - it could indicate a medical problem that requires treatment."

The Most Important Details Surrounding Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's Divorce
In late May, news broke that Amber Heard had filed for divorce from Johnny Depp, whom she married in a lavish island ceremony in February 2015. Although the couple had seemed happy and the news came out of left field, Amber, 30, also filed a restraining order against the 52-year-old Alice Through the Looking Glass actor, which included allegations of domestic abuse. Keep reading to see the most important information about the state of their relationship so far, and check back for updates as more information unfolds.
- Amber files for divorce from Johnny. Three days after Johnny's mother passed away, Amber filed for divorce on May 25 and cited irreconcilable differences in her petition. The couple has been married for 15 months, and has no prenuptial agreement.
- Johnny speaks out about the ordeal. A short statement given through his representative to Us Weekly on May 26 that said: "Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation, and lies about his personal life. Hopefully the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly."
- Amber is granted a restraining order from Johnny. The Magic Mike XXL actress filed a domestic violence restraining order accompanied by graphic photos of her bruised face on the morning of May 27. A source told People that the bruises aren't a rare occurrence, saying, "This was not an isolated event" and that "this was only the latest incident." Later that day, Amber was photographed coming out of court after a judge granted her request for temporary order.
- On the afternoon of May 27, Johnny was photographed fitting an elderly woman with a hearing aid during a visit to Lisbon, Portugal, with his band, The Hollywood Vampires. Later that evening, Johnny performed at the Rock in Rio festival and was pictured with his bandmates ahead of the show. While he has yet to release a statement about Amber's claims or the restraining order against him, a judge denied Amber's request for sole possession of their dog, Pistol, stating that there was "insufficient showing of need to protect pet dog."
- Vanessa Paradis and Lily-Rose Depp come to Johnny's defense. Upon hearing about Amber's domestic violence allegations against Johnny, both the actor's ex-partner and daughter penned notes in his support. On May 27, Vanessa wrote, "I believe with all my heart that these recent allegations being made are outrageous," claiming, "In all the years I have known Johnny, he has never been physically abusive with me and this looks nothing like the man I lived with for 14 wonderful years." Likewise, Lily took to Instagram and shared a childhood photo of her and her dad, along with a note that read, "My dad is the sweetest, most loving person I know, he's been nothing but a wonderful father to my little brother and I, and everyone who knows him would say the same."
- Comedian Doug Stanhope claims Amber is blackmailing Johnny. In a guest column for The Wrap, Doug - who has been friends with Johnny for years - wrote at length about how he believes Amber isn't as innocent as she seems. "Amber was now going to leave him, threatening to lie about him publicly in any and every possible duplicitous way if he didn't agree to her terms," he said. "Blackmail is what I would imagine other people might put it, including the manner in which he is now being vilified."
- Amber's lawyer slams blackmail accusations. Attorney Peter Sample was quick to shut down Doug's article about Amber with a follow-up statement to The Wrap that reads: "[The] allegations against Ms. Heard are absolutely and unequivocally false," adding that the claim she's blackmailing Johnny "has no basis in reality and is nothing but the typical celebrity muckraking for profit."
- The legal team for Amber speaks out against Johnny. Lead attorney Samantha F. Spector and cocounsel Joseph P. Koenig provided an in-depth statement to Just Jared on May 31 defending the Magic Mike XXL actress. "As the result of Amber's decision to decline giving an initial statement to the LAPD, her silence has been used against her by Johnny's team. Amber did not provide a statement to the LAPD in an attempt to protect her privacy and Johnny's career," they began, before ending the lengthy statement with, "We took the high road. Unfortunately, Johnny's team immediately went to the press and began viciously attacking Amber's character. Amber is simply a victim of domestic violence, and none of her actions are motivated by money. Amber is a brave and financially independent woman who is showing the courage of her convictions by doing the right thing against Johnny's relentless army of lawyers and surrogates. The Family Law Court is not going to be influenced by misinformation placed in the social media based on anonymous sources. Amber is the victim. Amber is a hero."
- People reveals new photos of a battered Amber. A photo of a bruised Amber appeared on the cover of People's June 13 issue (which was released on June 1). In its exclusive photos, she has both a bruised eye and a cut lip. In its cover story, People also revealed details from the court papers, in which Amber alleges that Johnny showed up at her birthday party "inebriated and high" and "violently shoved me to the floor." She also states that Depp hit her with a cell phone.
- Police are called to Amber and Johnny's home. According to reports, Amber's attorney called law enforcement on June 13, when Johnny's representative showed up to their home to retrieve his belongings. Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department told Us Weekly that the move wasn't in violation of Amber's restraining order as neither one of the parties were home at the time. The officers simply stood by to "ensure that only the items listed in the court order were being removed."
- Amber retracts her petition for spousal support. The actress's attorney filed a declaration to withdraw her request for spousal support from Johnny, saying the only reason she requested it was because she thought it was standard procedure in a divorce case. Amber, who wanted $50,000 per month from the actor, says the request is being "used against me to distract and divert the public away from the very serious real issue of domestic violence."
- Amber plans to testify in court. "As of now, the plan is for Amber to testify on Friday," a source tells Us Weekly. According to court documents, Amber stated she "could and would competently testify" if called as a witness. However, Johnny's attorney, Laura Wasser, also filed documents requesting that the court deny Heard's testimony if she failed to "appear for deposition" or did not "produce the requested documents at her deposition." There is no word yet on whether Johnny will attend the hearing.

The duchess of Cambridge stepped out with Prince William for the second day of the Royal Ascot in Ascot, England, on Wednesday, marking her first time attending the fun event. Kate was the picture of princess perfection in a white, lacy dress and matching hat, and thankfully the wind was on her side (for once!). With William looking as dapper as ever in a black suit and top hat, the royal pair mingled with guests and awarded the Duke of Cambridge Stakes trophies to a handful of lucky winners.
Kate, Will, and the rest of the royal family have been photographed out and about more than ever lately, thanks to a calendar jam-packed with high-profile functions dedicated to celebrating Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday. From a national church service and luncheon to the annual Trooping the Colour parade, the duke and duchess have been nothing short of entertaining wherever they go. What kid wouldn't want to film movies where you get to play a detective, go on vacation and meet a dreamboat boy every single time, or have the best wardrobe out of literally anyone? Keep reading to see all the times we wished we could have been them, then check out why you won't be seeing them on Fuller House.
Prince William Urges Young People Struggling With Their Sexuality: "You Have Nothing to Be Ashamed Of"
Prince William rarely appears (willingly) on the cover of a magazine, but the Duke of Cambridge broke boundaries by advocating for the LGBTQ community on the cover of Attitude's June 8 issue. In May, he invited several members of the community to join him at Kensington Palace to learn about their experiences with bullying. In the cover story, Will spoke specifically about young adults who have faced difficult circumstances due to their sexuality:
"No one should be bullied for their sexuality or any other reason and no one should have to put up with the kind of hate that these young people have endured in their lives. The young gay, lesbian and transgender individuals I met through Attitude are truly brave to speak out and to give hope to people who are going through terrible bullying right now. Their sense of strength and optimism should give us all encouragement to stand up to bullying wherever we see it. What I would say to any young person reading this who's being bullied for their sexuality: don't put up with it – speak to a trusted adult, a friend, a teacher, Childline, Diana Award or some other service and get the help you need. You should be proud of the person you are and you have nothing to be ashamed of."
The issue went to press just days before last week's devastating shooting in Orlando, making Will's quotes story especially poignant. Will and wife Kate Middleton paid their respects to the victims and their families in a somber ceremony from London on Tuesday.

Kim Kardashian's GQ Spread Could Have Been Plucked Right Out of Fifty Shades of Grey
Kim Kardashian is no stranger to getting naked on social media - in fact, some may say she's a pioneer for Instagram nudity - but she opted for a tasteful spread in this month's issue of GQ. OK, OK, there's still a little bit of nipple involved, but you'll have to go to GQ for that. The überstar posed for photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott for the magazine's annual Love, Sex, and Madness issue - its 10th ever - and even gave us a peek behind the scenes with a slightly NSFW video. "Kanye might be the artistic genius in the family, but Kim is the CEO," writes Caity Weaver, who profiled the mogul. We don't doubt it!
