Why Even Small Signs of Solidarity Matter After an Attack
As a native New Yorker, I know what it feels like to have your city targeted by terrorists. Sitting in my high-school classroom in Westchester, NY, I cried alongside my friends and teachers as we watched the planes crash into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11. Students lost their fathers and mothers (thankfully my family was OK). After we got over the shock of feeling unsafe, we rallied together. New Yorkers are notoriously tough, and there was a sense of camaraderie knowing, "united we stand."
Similarly, the global and Internet community have been rallying around France after the recent terrorist attacks on Nov. 13. Watching this from abroad left me feeling powerless, because I have a special place in my heart for the City of Light. If you're having similar emotions, do what you need to do to grieve. Perhaps that means wearing all black, lighting a candle in the memory of those we lost, donating money, or changing your Facebook profile picture.
You can also turn to art to help you through it. Many women are creating moving #PrayForParis nail art looks showing peace signs, French flags, teardrops, and other moving motifs. We rounded up these images from Instagram to shed light on those in mourning. Just looking at the sheer number of people (50+) who have already shared manicures on Instagram devoted to Paris symbolizes how healing nail painting can be.
