13 Things to Know About Brazilian Gymnast Flávia Saraiva

If you've been glued to your computer streaming the gymnastics competition at the Summer 2016 Olympics happening in Rio de Janeiro, then you already know one thing about Brazilian gymnast Flávia Saraiva: She's a powerhouse that might end up with a medal around her neck at the beam event.

The 16-year-old Rio-born athlete's routine at the qualification event on Aug. 7 earned her the third highest score, so before she attempts to repeat that and stand on that podium on Aug. 15, learn everything you need to know about her.

  1. Like Team USA's Laurie Hernandez, she's only 16 years old. She was born in Rio de Janeiro on Sept. 30, 1999.
  2. She's 4'4" and weighs just 68 pounds, which makes all other petite gymnasts look tall in comparison.
  3. She started gymnastics when she was 9 years old at a free sports center in Rio.
  4. Her nickname is "Flavinha" or "little Flavia."
  5. She lives just a few blocks away from the stadium where the gymnastics competitions are taking place.
