JetBlue Just Made History With the First Commercial Flight to Cuba in 50+ Years
The first commercial flight from the United States to Cuba in more than 50 years has landed in Santa Clara.
JetBlue Flight 387 made history on Aug. 31 after completing the 256-mile trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to the island, which has seen an uptick in American tourism since travel restrictions were loosened by the Obama administration earlier this year.
Passengers on board were greeted with goodie bags boasting mini Cuban flags as they took their seats ahead of the highly anticipated journey across the Atlantic Ocean to Santa Clara - the city previously known for housing Ernesto "Che" Guevara's tomb.
Although JetBlue was the first airline to fly the route, other airlines will be making the trip in months to come. According to the US Department of Transportation, Southwest, Delta, and American Airlines will soon participate in the new route.
Though there are now 12 authorized ways for US citizens to enter the Caribbean nation, keep in mind that it's still technically illegal for Americans to simply hop on a plane, so definitely do your research before booking your own tickets.
Read on for more pictures of Flight 387's history-making moment. Then, discover how cruise companies are also capitalizing on the new US-Cuba relationship.
