This Heartwarming Track Moment Is the Ultimate Demonstration of the Olympic Spirit
Two competitors who never once spoke a word before this race shared a touching moment that beautifully illustrates what the Olympic spirit is all about. During the 5,000m heat on Tuesday morning, US runner Abbey D'Agostino was running in a pack with four and a half laps left to go. She stumbled and accidentally clipped New Zealand runner Nikki Hamblin who was just ahead of her, and both fell to the ground.
Nikki said, ""When I went down I was like, 'Why am I on the ground?' And suddenly there was this hand on my shoulder." It was Abbey, who had stopped to help her up, saying "Come on, get up. We have to finish this race."

But Abbey's knee buckled underneath her after an injury she had suffered in the fall, and she fell back down. Nikki turned and helped her back up to her feet, and they both finished the race. They hugged at the finish line, and we smiled, witnessing one of the greatest moments in the Rio Olympics. Nikki said, "I'm so grateful for Abbey for doing that for me. That girl is the Olympic spirit right there."
