Why The Santa Clause Perfectly Depicts Your Childhood Image of the North Pole

The holidays are officially upon us, and one of the best things about the festive season is getting nostalgic about how you used to celebrate as a kid. In between sledding with your friends, writing those carefully thought-out Christmas lists for Santa, and baking cookies with your mom, you probably spent a lot of time dreaming about the North Pole. What was it like? How many elves lived there? Could you apply to be an elf? If so, what experience did that entail? Many Christmas movies brought the mysterious and magical place to life, but in my opinion, none did it better than The Santa Clause.

Nothing can ever really compare to the 1994 film starring Tim Allen, but the film's two sequels, The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, still held true to their original North Pole vision. The quaint buildings were decorated with candy canes, there was a Ball Room, and Santa got to collapse in a gigantic bed with comfortable sheets at the end of his long night. From the endless amount of toys to the constant hustle and bustle of the working elves to the grand kitchen constantly cooking up gingerbread houses, it was as if the movie took my wildest dreams of what the North Pole could be and made them real. Even if you're all grown up now, keep reading for further proof that seeing isn't believing, believing is seeing.

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Grilled Cheese

Grilled cheese is one of those recipes everyone should learn how to make, but it's so much more than white bread and American cheese. Need a little inspiration? Here's how some of our favorite celebrity cooks make theirs (I personally want to try Chrissy Teigen's ASAP).

Alton Brown: Literally Grilled

Alton Brown has very strong feelings about calling it "grilled" cheese when it actually isn't. In Alton's grilled cheese video, he says, "These words repesent disappintment, dishonesty, and disillusionment, because whenever people say they're gonna make you a grilled cheese sandwich, what they really mean is they're gonna make you a griddled sandwich containing some melted cheese. Well, not me." And he's not exaggerrating - Alton's grilled cheese recipe calls for putting the cheese and the bread on the grill.

Giada De Laurentiis: With Italian Flair

Would you expect anything else from a Giada recipe than an Italian flair? Her grilled cheese with spinach and pancetta is proof that prosciutto or pancetta makes anything better.

Mario Batali: French Toast-Like

Mario Batali's grilled cheese technique is certainly one I'd never heard before. He whisks eggs, whole milk, thyme, pecorino cheese, and salt in a bowl and dips each sandwich in the mixture before adding to the pan. "We're almost making it like a french toast; in Italian, this would be called mozzarella en carozza, which is 'in the carriage.'" This eggy coating creates a thicker, crunchy, golden-brown crust.

Chrissy Teigen: Sweet and Spicy

"My love of oozing cheese knows no bounds, and as I'm sure you've noticed, I'm constantly trying to find a way to squish delicious things between buttery pieces of bread." Same, girl. That's how Chrissy Teigen introduces her grilled cheese recipe, and the oozing cheese is just the beginning of the excitement. Chrissy adds sweet Thai chili sauce, red onions, and fresh peaches for an unexpected sweet and spicy flavor combination.

Ina Garten: Mayo Slathered

Ina Garten is one of those cooks who follows recipes to a T, so you know her decision to include this secret ingredient was well-thought-out, and it's . . . mayonnaise. Actually, mayo and dijon mustard. Ina's grilled cheese recipe calls for generously spreading the bread with the condiment mixture on one side, and butter on the other - "Don't neglect the corners!" she advises.

The Pioneer Woman: Starts With a Cast-Iron Skillet

The Pioneer Woman's grilled cheese recipe proves that sometimes you don't need to mess with a classic. If you've got a cast-iron skillet, all you need is three ingredients - bread, cheese, and butter - to be on your way to an extracrispy exterior and melty center.

Bobby Flay: Nontraditional Cheeses

You won't find cheddar or mozzarella in Bobby Flay's grilled cheese. You'll find a combination of melty brie and tangy goat cheese, plus bacon and green tomatoes to keep things interesting.

The Most Powerful Thing You Can Say to Another Mom

A few weeks ago, one of my dearest friends lost her 21-month-old daughter forever when the sweet baby girl died unexpectedly and suddenly. My friend and I live on opposite sides of the country, so I took a trip to visit her for this past weekend. Admittedly, I was a nervous wreck about what I was going to say to her and her husband. How was I going to find the words to comfort them? How would I avoid saying the wrong things? I wanted to find perfect words, and, as I am a writer, words happen to be one of the few ways I truly know how to express myself.

Except I was at a complete loss over her loss. Having two healthy children at home, I felt I couldn't truly relate to her pain, so how on earth was I going to be able to comfort her during a situation that I have very little experience in? Armed with a pocket full of Bible verses and a slough of rehearsed things to say, I walked into her home and could never in a million years have foreseen the life-altering and powerful words that would be spoken between us during our time together. Except the words came from her, to me.

From her. To me.

That's right. My friend, who at this point is proving to be one of the strongest people I know, said something during her time of grief that will forever hold a spot in my heart. It was a phrase so simple, yet it has hit a chord deep inside of me. As she was describing the events leading up to the death of her daughter, she tried to express to me her complete heartbreak as she held her sweet child in the hospital during the minutes and hours after she died. Describing the time only as her worst nightmare, she said to me with tears rolling down her face, "You're a mom, you know."

You're a mom, you know.

This phrase took my breath away - as well as any composure that I had managed to keep together up until then. Because it was at that point, with that phrase, that I was able to start to understand the magnitude of her sorrow. Sure, I was completely heartbroken for her before, as death is difficult for anyone. But I'll admit that I didn't fully understand my role as her friend or as a fellow mom. See, all this time I had been looking in the wrong places for the perfect thing to say to her while I should have just looked at our simplest bond: motherhood. And while I have not experienced the pain that comes along with losing a child, I do understand the joy that she once experienced from holding her child. And to lose that? There are no words

Except maybe "I'm a mom, I know."

Losing a child is every mom's worst fear - no matter who you are or what kind of mom you choose to be. In the days since, I've been keeping this simple thought in mind when relating myself to other mommies. Sure, we all have our different ways of mothering and raising our families, but we do have one thing in common: our hearts are directly connected to our children. It makes the whole mommy wars thing seem, well, totally ridiculous.

You're a mom, you know.

So as I went with my own mom, who has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, to her radiation treatment, I glanced over at the young mother of a small boy in the waiting room. He was maybe 3 years old (though it's hard to tell because he was so tiny). He sported a colorful Superman cape and a bland hospital mask as he sat cradled in his mom's arms. She said something quietly to him. My heart stopped. This mom ached for that mom. And the tears started to fall from my eyes despite me not knowing her one bit. Despite me only sitting in the waiting room for maybe 30 seconds. Despite my own mom sitting next to me about to have her own radiation treatment. This is crazy, I thought. I don't even know this woman.

But what I do know is that I'm a mom.

And later I was getting dinner at a takeout restaurant, and one of the employees was on the phone in the restroom. She was struggling to find a babysitter for her child while she finished her late shift. She was frantic. She was upset. She was mad. My heart skipped another beat, and the tears welled up in my eyes once again.

I know, I'm a mom.

As I went back to my mom's house, heartbroken over my friend's loss, my mother was trying to comfort me. Asking if I was OK. Me! She was the one going through radiation, I should be comforting her. And then it dawned on me as to why she was so worried about how I was doing.

She knows, she's a mom.

And on the plane on the ride home there was a new mom standing with her infant son nearly the whole four-and-a-half-hour flight because if she attempted to sit down, he wailed. She looked exhausted and frustrated. She checked her watch frequently, but she also kept on task all while kissing on his little bald head.

I know, I'm a mom.

See, it's a thread that unites us all. Helicopter moms. Free-range moms. Breastfeeding moms. Formula-feeding moms. Rich moms. Poor moms. Moms of sick kids. Moms of healthy kids. Moms. The crazy, heart-stopping love that we feel for our children runs deep through each and every one of us as moms.

And this knowledge is painful at times. It's why every sappy commercial brings us to tears. It's why we can't watch the news. It's why we get in the car and cry after we drop our kids off to their first day of school. It's why food allergies are terrifying. It's why our hearts ache when we hear about miscarriage or fertility problems. It's why we are up at night worrying about our teens. It's why the thought of our children eventually leaving the nest makes us weep into our coffee. It's why the death of another mother's child is so utterly heartbreaking . . .

It's also why we should always provide a blanket of support to all fellow moms. Not only to those who are suffering through the unimaginable pain of losing a child, but also to those mamas going through plain ol' rough times . . . and even those moms who are just having one of those days. Hug her, and if you are struggling to find the right words, all you may really need to say is, "I know, I'm a mom."

But you probably already know this. After all, you're a mom.

The Right - and Wrong - Way to Take Your Probiotics

Although probiotics have been around a long while, they're finally becoming a popular mainstream health and wellness product - you'll see probiotic waters, granolas, and even mug muffins at the grocery store nowadays. And it's for good reason! Probiotics are crucial for balancing your gut to be healthier, getting sick less often, having a better mood, and banishing bloating for good.

Culinary nutritionist Amie Valpone, HHC, AADP, has helped us better understand probiotics and their role in a healthy body, so we asked for her tips on how to take them each day - and for how long we should be taking them. She also noted that a probiotic regimen will affect each body differently.

"Each of us is different, so see what works for you," said Amie. "Keep a note in your journal [to log] how you feel taking the probiotics versus not taking them (and also when you eat probiotic-rich foods). We're under so much stress - from our air pollution to our processed foods to our own stresses - this good bacteria will be beneficial!"

  • Take them before you eat. Amie suggests you "take probiotics on an empty stomach, so they don't ferment with the foods [you're] eating." Pop one of these probie pills first thing in the morning before you have your first cup of coffee.
  • Take them daily. Consistency is key! Especially when you're first beginning your probiotic regimen, it's important to take them daily to notice results. "My suggestion is to keep yourself on a routine of taking the probiotics," she said.
  • It's an ongoing effort. When I first started my probiotic regimen, I asked Amie if this is a temporary treatment to rebalance an imbalanced gut, or if my body now depends on the probiotics to have that balance. She suggested taking probiotics as an ongoing effort, but checking in now and then to see how you feel off the pills, as everyone's body is different. "See what works for you!" she said. "The microbiome of the gut is an ever-changing ecosystem, but a steady probiotic routine can help to minimize fluctuations that can cause digestive imbalance in your body."
  • Take monthly breaks. Check in with your body and see how you feel after you've been on probiotics for a while. "You can give yourself breaks each month," said Amie. "I've been taking probiotics for over 10 years now, but I do give my body a break for a few days a month, and I make note of how I feel on those days to see if there is any correlation between the bacteria and the way I feel."
  • Don't forget them on vacation. "I always pack them when I travel," said Amie. She also noted that "most of my clients get tummy issues from the altitude from planes (constipation) and other bloating issues from eating rich food at restaurants that their bodies aren't used to." Note to self: keep a spare pack of probiotics in the suitcase.

Chrissy Teigen celebrated her 31st birthday on Wednesday in Mexico by getting drunk and making soup, proving once again that she's our spirit animal. After her husband John Legend shared a sweet birthday message on the beach, Chrissy and John headed inside, where Chrissy got "pretty tequila drunk at 11 a.m." and made pozole rojo (a Mexican pork soup) without ever having made it before. "Making pozole rojo in Mexico because these ingredients are toooooooo beautiful," Chrissy tweeted as she and John watched Family Guy in the kitchen. Chrissy made her soup with spicy dried chiles, onions, homemade chicken broth, pork, avocado, and cilantro rice.

The Cravings cookbook author and mom to adorable baby Luna shared a video of herself chopping vegetables in a gold metallic bathing suit, saying, "beef stew!" followed by a tweet that acknowledged her mistake.

Chrissy admitted she didn't know why she chose a warm comfort food for the hot weather in Mexico, saying, "I have no idea why I am making pork stew in 85-degree weather." Either way, it looks amazing and is an even better treat than a birthday cake - Chrissy has admitted she's not a dessert person and doesn't like to bake. As if we needed further proof that Chrissy is indeed a self-proclaimed "soup master," this seals the deal.

Better Legs and a Leaner Middle in 1 Move

Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Kathryna Hancock

Are you looking to add a bit more shape to your legs? How about strengthening your midsection? If you answered yes, we have the perfect exercise for you.

Strengthening exercises for the legs (our foundation) and the core will not only give you a more flattering shape, but it will help you with overall stability and even correcting your posture.

High Knees Please

If you've never tried this exercise, you are in for a treat. Considered a plyometric exercise, jump training will help strengthen your body and burn a lot of calories, moving you towards your goals even faster.

High knees works your calves, quads, hamstrings, shins, and your abdominal muscles. When more than one muscle is being worked at the same time, you will burn more calories than if you were just doing an isolation exercise such as hamstring curls, or crunches.

How to do High Knees
We asked certified personal trainer Heather Neff for her take on how to best do this move. She told us that "you'll definitely want to get in a quick three- to five-minute warmup to ready your muscles for this exercise and that you can run or march in place, along with performing a few dynamic stretches such as toe touches, side bends, and a few foot grabs to stretch the quads (do not hold the stretches)."

  1. Stand up straight and place your feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Place your hands palms down facing the floor, hovering just above your belly button.
  3. Quickly drive your right knee up to meet your right hand, bring the same leg back to the ground immediately bring the left knee coming up to meet your left hand.
  4. As you are alternating knees, you want to do it with a hopping motion, staying on the balls of your feet the entire time.
  5. Make sure you are engaging your abdominal muscles as each knee comes up to meet the hands.

If That's too Intense, Try This

If you don't quite have your endurance built up yet, have knee issues, or are more of a beginner, don't fret. Neff told us that you can still target the same muscles with this variation of the high knees exercise.

How to do the High-Knee March

  1. You will begin in the same stance as the high knees exercise, with your palms at belly button height and facing down towards the floor.
  2. Bring your right knee up to meet your right palm, then lower the same leg down to the floor and repeat with your left knee.
  3. Leave the hopping part out and keep alternating knees while engaging your abdominal muscles as you bring the knees up each time.

Bonus: High-Knee Oblique Twist

  1. Begin by standing with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Make a fist with both hands and bend the elbows to where your hands are about level with your chin.
  3. Drive the right knee up, twist your torso to the right, and bring the knee to meet your left elbow.
  4. Immediately repeat with the left knee meeting your right elbow and do this in a hopping motion while staying on the balls of your feet.
  5. Keep your abdominal muscles engaged as your knees come up, squeeze the side oblique muscles as you twist.

You can add this exercise to any of your routines or do it as a stand-alone. Try to keep moving for at least 20 minutes at a time; if you can't do the regular high-knee exercise the entire time, switch back and forth between that one and the high-knee march. You can always work your way up to longer periods of time. Put on some good music, have fun with it, and go get those killer legs and abs.

Dessert Ramen Looks as Glorious as It Sounds

As if dreaming up the Cronut wasn't enough, Chef Dominique Ansel continues to churn out groundbreaking treats like frozen s'mores and cookie shots. He's not done raising the bar, because his latest creation in partnership with Baileys not only sounds delicious, but looks even better. The base is a Baileys Irish Cream-soaked bread and butter pudding, and it's topped with kataifi "noodles," a passion fruit "egg," a coconut marshmallow "fishcake," and waffle "nori." It even comes with a side of hot sauce, which is actually a packet of cherry jam.

There's a catch: Baileys Bakeout Noodles will only be available to the first 200 registrants within the designated delivery zone in Manhattan. Oh, and you have to be of legal drinking age (21 or older), of course. The contest launches tomorrow at 12 p.m. EST. May the odds be ever in your favor.

1 Look at These Gisele Bündchen VS Fashion Show Looks Will Make You Miss Her on the Runway

It's hard to believe that Gisele Bündchen is no longer a staple on the runway - the Brazilian supermodel retired in April 2015 - and with the 2016 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show fast approaching (this year, it's in Paris), we are feeling a little nostalgic. From 1999 to 2006, Gisele was the ultimate VS Angel, strutting down the runway in skimpy lingerie, blowing kisses, and sometimes giving the camera a wink. Those were the days!

And even though other equally talented Angels had taken the throne and filled her (very high-heeled) shoes - Alessandra Ambrosio, Adriana Lima, Izabel Goulart and Lais Ribeiro - we sometimes think the VS show will never be as good as it was when Gisele was there. Keep scrolling to reminisce about those days by looking at her best looks, then check out how she stays fit.

This Pit Bull Listening to Adele Is All of Us

Hello, were you able to get tickets to see Adele in concert this year? We're guessing this Pit Bull did not, and that strong sadness coupled with Adele's beautiful music was just simply too much for this little lady to handle. We feel you, pal. We really, really do.

Where Do You Stand on the Internet's Great Giraffe Tie Debate of 2016?

What started out as a comedian's silly question has now caused the internet to absolutely implode.

Jeremy Hammond started it all when he asked his followers, "When giraffes go to work do you think they put the tie at the top or bottom of their necks?" The tweet, posted on Nov. 17 and shown above, even included a hilarious and helpful drawing illustrating the two options - but thousands of retweets later, we're nowhere close to a consensus.

Now, even Chrissy Teigen has weighed in! She argued that giraffes would "clearly" wear ties at the bottom of their necks.

The debate has also inspired her to ponder other similarly confusing questions. How would dogs wear pants, for example? On the hind legs, according to Chrissy. How would a ferret wear a tube top? They're better off wearing a dress, she said: "8 nips, 4 tubes." Lastly, how would spiders wear pants? Well, she's stumped on that one.

While she might not have all the answers, Chrissy did feel pretty strongly about her stance in the great giraffe debate. If you're like her, let us know how you feel in the poll below.

If You Look Up the Word Goddess in the Dictionary, These Pictures of Joan Smalls at the VS Fashion Show Will Come Up

This is the sixth year walking the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show for Puerto Rican stunner Joan Smalls, so we think it's fair to say she has the VS look down to a science. Showing off her mile-long legs, Joan appeared on the runway at the Grand Palais in Paris on Nov. 30 (the show airs on Dec. 5) in what we think might be two of the best looks of the night.

Joan first appeared on the shimmery catwalk wearing a hot-beyond-words all-black sheer bodysuit with a velvet belt and long black wings, paired with strappy sandals that would scream sexy if they spoke. Later on, she wore a hunter green bra and thong set with a red leather duster featuring flower embroidery that matched her suede over-the-knee boots. We have one word: hot! Look at the photos ahead and tell us you don't agree.

The Latest Hipster Parenting Trend: Dads Who Want to Be Called "Papa"

Image Source: Flickr user Dani Vasquez

Parenting trends come and go, many of them largely depending on a family's surrounding community. Recently, more and more progressive moms have opted for "mama" instead of "mom," and now the latest trend to rise out of Brooklyn, NY, comes from hipster dads, who want to be called "papa" instead of "dad" or "daddy."

Will Grose, a 36-year-old Brooklyn dad to three boys - Axel, Oscar, and Balthazar - thinks that "dad" sounds "very Saved by the Bell-ish" and said that about half of the children at his son's Williamsburg preschool use "papa" to refer to their fathers. "Perhaps 'papa' is representative of a general leaning towards wanting to be your child's friend as opposed to having a more hierarchical relationship," Armin Brott told The Daily Beast. "'Papa' is a little hipper, a little more familiar and friendlier than 'dad.'"

Although the trend seems to have popped up in urban areas due to a desire to be more alternative than the regular old dads of the world, don't be surprised if you see a beanie-wearing hipster kiddo calling for his papa in a coffee shop near you soon (though whether the trend spreads like wildfire throughout the US or stays put in BK, "Papa" will never not make me think of Fievel from An American Tail).

This Company Will Come Up With a Unique Hashtag For Your Wedding

It's hard enough to plan a wedding and figure out every tiny detail, like coming up with a unique hashtag idea. While we have some hashtag ideas you can use, a company now exists that will create a hashtag for your wedding for a small price.

The company, called Happily Ever #Hashtagged, offers three different tiers of pricing. You can get one hashtag for $40, three hashtags for $85, or both wedding and bachelor/bachelorette hashtags for $115. While some people cringe at the idea of a hashtag for a wedding, it's one of the easiest ways to see your wedding on social media.

On the site, the company shows off some hashtags its come up with by combining the names of couples, like #MollyPicksUpTheTempo and #TheMorenoTheMerrier. In the grand scheme of things, paying a small price for a personalized wedding hashtag might make planning your big day just a bit easier.

Gilmore Girls: The Last 4 Words Would Have Been a Terrible Original Ending

As a staunch defender of the Final Four Words on Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, I feel OK with saying that they would have been a terrible original ending. Amy Sherman-Palladino intended to wrap up the show with that exchange, but since she (heartbreakingly) wasn't on board for the final scene, she wasn't able to. While it meant we were in limbo for years and year, wondering if we'd ever find out what she wanted for Rory and Lorelai, I think it was to our (and the characters') benefit that The CW's series didn't end the way she wanted.

The last words - "Mom?" "Yeah?" "I'm pregnant." - would have occurred at the end of season seven, meaning Rory would have been 22 years old. She would have just graduated from Yale, and depending on how different the final season would have been if Sherman-Palladino were involved, she may have been about to hit the road to cover future President Barack Obama's campaign trail. Rory is a bundle of talent and potential; if she were pregnant, it would have (at least temporarily) stifled her ability to pursue a career in journalism.

Clearly, now that we've caught up with Rory nine years later, she's still struggling. She's not gainfully employed and her love life is frankly disappointing. It's not that she's in a better place to have a baby, but at least she's lived her 20s and discovered what she's capable of. While it's not the future we envisioned for Rory, it's important that she be given the opportunity to thrive. Hopefully we'll get to see her in the next phase of her life: motherhood.

I love Rory, but after watching A Year in the Life, I can confidently say she's not a great person. She's been the Other Woman not once but twice, she's crashed a boat in a fit of self-pity, and it turns out that she's not even a terrific journalist. (Why would she even agree to write that piece about lines?) Perhaps her talents lie in parenthood, and she's lived enough life now to embrace a new role, rather than potentially resent an unexpected pregnancy.

I'm not saying that's definitely how she would have felt (she's a fictional character, after all), but it wouldn't have been fair to a pregnancy on Rory at 22. However you feel about Palladino's Last Four Words on A Year in the Life, it's an infinitely better story for 32-year-old Rory.

When in Doubt, Blame Someone Else

You remember when you were younger and you and your siblings would make huge messes only to have your parents catch you in the act? For me, whenever Mom would find my brother and me in the midst of a huge disaster and want to know who was at fault, my brother would immediately blame me because I was the baby. The two pups in this video ran into the same problem when their owner discovered a huge toilet paper mess. Though it appears obvious that the French Bulldog is at fault, considering she's covered in evidence, the Bull Mastiff isn't about to take any chances of being blamed. Watch this hilarious video to see what happens, and watch more cute animal videos here.

What I Learned Rewatching Gilmore Girls as a Mother

When I first tuned in to Gilmore Girls, which began airing a startling 16 years ago on a now-defunct network called The WB, I was closer in age to Rory – the bookish teenage girl being raised by a single mother in a small town. As the show gained in popularity, my mom and I began watching it together. On breaks from college, I'd come home and we'd binge-watch a full season before binge-watching was a term.

After its seventh and final season ended in 2007, I didn't revisit it. Then, the Netflix revival was announced, and I spent this past Summer rewatching all 153 episodes – a feat considering I had a toddler to raise and a new pregnancy to nurture. This time, though, I wasn't seeing it from a daughter's perspective. Now, I was closer in age to Lorelai. My vantage point shifted greatly, and I discovered nuances that never seemed to exist before . . . not least of which being my concern for how much caffeine a growing child could ingest.

A few days late (a necessary drawback to having said kid and third-trimester sleep deprivation), I hunkered down on the couch – with my mom, per tradition – and watched Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

In a bizarre twist, I now felt intrinsically connected to each generation of Gilmores. As a mother to a girl of my own, I was Lorelai – struggling to define my role as parent and as my own person. As a 30-something, I was Rory – still curious about my life's path as a new, life-changing detour presents itself. And, with my own mom at my side, I was Emily – rushing to create a lasting legacy for my family.

And although I admit that Lorelai and Rory aren't the embodiment of mother-daughter relationship perfection and are, in fact, deeply flawed, at times deeply frustrating characters, I've learned a great deal in rewatching the series – and the final chapters on Netflix – now as a mother.

Ahead, a few parenting lessons I gleaned upon my return visit to Stars Hollow.

Patagonia to Donate All of Its $10 Million Black Friday Profits to Environmental Organizations

Update: Patagonia's holiday efforts have exceeded all of the company's expectations. The company announced its Black Friday sales were "record breaking," bringing in $10 million to help combat climate change. "We expected to reach $2 million in sales - we beat that expectation five times over. The enormous love our customers showed to the planet on Black Friday enables us to give every penny to hundreds of grassroots environmental organizations working around the world," a statement from the website revealed.

Patagonia says it hopes the impact of its Black Friday sales will encourage Americans to continue to "defend policies and regulations that will protect wild places and wildlife," and, most importantly, remind citizens why the Paris Agreement on climate change needs to remain a top priority in the United States.

Original story:

Patagonia is making a statement this holiday season with its Black Friday sales. The clothing company announced it will be donating all of its profits from Black Friday to grassroots environmental organizations.

"This year Patagonia will donate 100 percent of global Black Friday sales in our stores and on our website to grassroots organizations working in local communities to protect our air, water, and soil for future generations," a statement from the Patagonia website read.

Written by Patagonia's president and CEO Rose Marcario, the announcement also addressed the need for industries to put their resources into environmental efforts following the results of the presidential election. "During a difficult and divisive time, we felt it was important to go further and connect more of our customers, who love wild places, with those who are fighting tirelessly to protect them," Marcario wrote.

Marcario says the threat of climate change on "water and air pollution, extinction of species and erosion of topsoil" should be a great concern for all Americans, regardless of political affiliation. "The threats facing our planet affect people of every political stripe, of every demographic, in every part of the country. We all stand to benefit from a healthy environment - and our children and grandchildren do, too."

Marcario revealed the Patagonia brand has already raised $74 million over the years for grassroots environmental organizations, and will continue to "fight harder and smarter, and use every means at our disposal to prevail for the sake of the country, the planet, and the wild places and creatures that need our voice."

Now this is a Black Friday sale we can all feel good about.

14 Quotes From the Grinch That Perfectly Describe the Chaos of the Holidays

The holidays are usually a time for cheer, but they can also be super hectic - the parties, the presents, the unbearably cold weather. While some days we feel like Buddy the Elf, others we find ourselves relating to the Grinch from Dr. Seuss's memorable tale. While the original will always be a classic, the live-action version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas is filled with a number of perfect quotes to use IRL. Whether you're feeling green about Christmastime or you're just a pessimist all year round, you should totally work these into your daily conversations from here on out.

Should You Teach Kids to Share?

There is a sharing policy at my son's preschool. It's a parent-run co-op, so we have to have policies like this so that we will all handle situations relatively the same way. The policy is that a child can keep a toy as long as they want to. If another child wants the toy, they have to wait until the first child is done with it. We'll even "save" toys for the child if they have to go to the bathroom, go to the snack table, etc. so that it won't get taken before they're done. This applies to anything in the yard or school that can be played with, including swings and monkey bars.

At first, it didn't really occur to me to wonder why this was the policy. I just went with it, because that's the rule, and it didn't seem like a big deal to me. The kids all know the rule, so outside of maybe their first two weeks at the school, they don't throw a giant fit when you tell them, "You can have it when Sally Jo is done." But lately I've been noticing a totally different attitude toward sharing in other places we go, and I'm starting to really know exactly why this is the school's policy.

Two Questionable Sharing Practices

Here are a couple of examples of questionable sharing practices that I've seen recently. The first comes from a good friend of mine. (And I hope she doesn't mind that I use her story as an example.) She and her almost-2-year-old were at the park one day. He had brought a small car from home to play with. Another child, a little bit older, wanted to play with the car and was demanding that my friend's son give him the car. A typical toddler scuffle ensued, and the other mother told her son, "I guess his mom didn't teach him how to share." Never mind the fact that the car belongs to him and that when someone asks you to share, "No" is a perfectly legitimate response.

My second story happened one morning at the local rec center. Friday mornings they fill the gym with tons of Little Tykes climbing structures and those plastic cars they can drive around, tricycles, big balls, even a bouncy castle. Basically a toddler's dream play room. There's this one red car in particular my son really likes playing with, and the last time we went, he drove it around the entire hour and a half we were there. While most of the moms with smaller kids will shadow their kids as they play, my son is old enough now that I can sit on the sidelines and watch. From there I watched a mom whose son wanted to drive the car approach my son repeatedly, saying, "OK, now it's time for you to give him a turn!" Of course he ignored her, and eventually she gave up. There were a million other little cars for her son to drive, including one that was almost identical. Or maybe I would have stepped in at some point.

Real-World Lessons

I don't agree with the approach of the mothers in either of these situations. I think it does a child a great disservice to teach him that he can have something that someone else has, simply because he wants it. And I can understand the desire to give your children everything they want; we all have it. But it's a good lesson for you both to learn that this isn't always possible, and you shouldn't step all over other people to get these things.

Furthermore, this is not how things work in the real world. In your child's adult life, he's going to think he's owed everything he sees. This is already happening in the next generation. I read a fascinating article about how today's teens and 20-somethings are expecting raises and promotions at their jobs for reasons like, "I show up every day."

If you doubt my reasoning, think about your own day-to-day adult life. You wouldn't cut in front of someone in the grocery checkout line just because you didn't feel like waiting. And most grown adults wouldn't take something from someone, like a phone or a pair of sunglasses, just because they wanted to use it. (Well, maybe some of you would. In which case, this post may not be for you.)

It's hard, as with so many things about parenthood, but let's teach our kids how to cope with disappointment, because it happens. And we won't always be there to fix it for them. Let's teach them how they can get things they want through diligence, patience, and hard work.

How do you feel about the concept of sharing where young children are concerned? I know you likely don't have a "policy," as I sure didn't before the preschool told me they had one. Now I notice a variety of different takes on the subject from the parents I see around. Makes me wonder if we need to be talking about this issue a little bit more.

Queen Letizia Just Put Together the Most Gorgeous Look Any Royal Has Ever Worn - You'll Want to See It!

Queen Letizia of Spain's hunter-green look is so stunning, we don't even know where to start. A day after wearing a lace lavender coat that some would call a work of art, the royal chose an A-line knee-length dress from her favorite Spanish designer Felipe Varela for the second day of her official visit to Portugal. But it's not all just about the shimmery rain-pattern sequins on the dress or its silk sleeves. It's not even just about the matching suede pumps with their V-neck detail or the matching rectangular patent-leather clutch the queen carried. It was really when we saw the queen's bob pulled into a gorgeous braided updo that allowed her jaw-dropping earrings to steal the spotlight that we lost all our cool. Keep reading to experience what we mean.

The Walking Dead: Yes, Jesus Is Gay

If you've been reading The Walking Dead comic books in addition to watching the show, then you know there are some big differences between Robert Kirkman's books and AMC's series. Thankfully, it seems that the writers have chosen to keep one element: Jesus is still gay. While it's not explicitly stated on the show, actor Tom Payne essentially confirmed the character's orientation in an interview with AOL. "He's a badass and he happens to be gay," he said. "I see no reason why that would be different in the show." Check out the clip:

You go, Jesus.

Joanna Gaines Got a Bakery, so Chip Announced This Huge News

Fixer Upper fans, get ready to add yet another Chip and Joanna Gaines destination to your bucket list. The couple announced exclusively to Southern Living that they are opening a breakfast restaurant called Elite Café in Waco, TX! The couple bought the restaurant, which has been around since 1919, and plan to completely transform it into their own vision. Chip told the publication, "The Elite Café is going to be a breakfast joint. I've always been a breakfast connoisseur. I always do a heavy, bigger breakfast, but Jo is the exact opposite. She was kind enough to come with me on this one, and we are going to do up a breakfast joint here in town." This comes as no surprise since Joanna, the cupcake connoisseur, recently opened Magnolia Flour Bakery, and now Chip gets to call the shots on a restaurant - Chip's homemade breakfasts for Joanna are always impressive.

As if Chip and Joanna's new magazine, Magnolia Journal, and new book, The Magnolia Story, aren't enough to be excited about, this news proves the couple truly are unstoppable. In true Fixer Upper fashion, the couple have completely renovated the space and created a new and inviting restaurant. Chip told Southern Living, "The restaurant itself is literally one big giant kitchen. When we first got in there, it was all the things you can imagine - dingy, musky. But if I took you in there today, you'd be like 'Oh! This is so clean, everything smells so great.' Those are a few benefits of a little bit of elbow grease and hard work on the front end." Start counting down the days until Summer 2017, because that's when the restaurant will open.

The Time Liam Payne Auditioned for Future Girlfriend Cheryl Cole on The X Factor

One Direction's Liam Payne rose to fame thanks to The X Factor, and now that Payne is officially dating former judge Cheryl Cole, we can't help but revisit his audition. He was first a contestant at age 14, but Simon Cowell cut him, hoping he would return once his voice has matured more. He came back in two years later in 2010, and this is his audition. He serenaded future girlfriend Cole with Ella Fitzgerald's breakup tune "Cry Me A River." Her critique? "You've definitely got it, whatever it is that you got it," she said. "I thought your voice was really, really powerful."
