Lizzo Has an Important Message For Fans: "As Long as You Stay Silent, You Are Part of the Problem"
In a recent Instagram post following the death of George Floyd, Lizzo shared a powerful message urging white people to speak up and be actively anti-racist. "White people, this is your daily reminder that as long as you stay silent, you are part of the problem," she said. "I know you're not racist, but you have to be more than that." She also reminded her Black followers that it is not their responsibility to educate people on racism or white privilege. "It is exhausting, and if they don't see it or believe it by now, they don't want to," she said. "There's Google, there are books, and they can do that for themselves."
"Now that the protesters have everyone's attention, what are the next steps we're gonna take to make sure we're actually moving forward?"
The "Good As Hell" singer went on to say the nationwide Black Lives Matters protests are just the beginning of progress. "Now that the protesters have everyone's attention, what are the next steps we're gonna take to make sure we're actually moving forward and we don't go back to this bullsh*t?" she asked. Lizzo then urged her fans to help make this progress, as the world is currently standing still and waiting for action.
Lizzo's important video comes after an emotional IGTV on Saturday, where the singer (who spent her early music career in Minneapolis) spoke about how fans can help rebuild Black-owned businesses in Minnesota, as well as use their privilege to fight racism following Floyd's death. Floyd was killed on May 25 in Minneapolis, when police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes even as he said couldn't breathe. On May 29, Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder, sparking protests worldwide campaigning against violence and racism. Check out Lizzo's moving message below.
