This New Rumor Suggests Apple Is Working on Smart Glasses
According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is reportedly working on augmented reality (AR) glasses - similar to Google Glass. The smart glasses could arrive as early as 2018.
The smart glasses would "connect wirelessly to iPhones" and, like Google Glass, show you information on the lens and possibly incorporate augmented reality. The source tells Bloomberg that Apple has placed an order for "near-eye displays." Another source added that if this testing is successful, the smart glasses could arrive in 2018.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has previously expressed the company's interest in augmented reality. "We are high on AR for the long run," Cook told analysts in a conference call in July. The company also has several patents for AR and smart glasses that could indicate this is Apple's next big product.
It's not clear if Apple would succeed in the smart glasses space, considering Google Glass received intense criticism and was ultimately shelved in January 2015.
