Bruno Mars Addresses Those Who Question His Puerto Rican Pride: "That's So Insulting to Me"

Bruno Mars, née Peter Gene Hernandez, wants you to know that he's proud of his Puerto Rican heritage despite his ambiguous stage name - or, rather, that the two aren't mutually exclusive. The "24K Magic" singer recently appeared on the cover of Latina's February 2017 issue and opened up about his Puerto Rican pride, his mother's passing in 2013, and his music influences.

Bruno, who is the magazine's first male celebrity to appear on the cover since Romeo Santos in 2014, took the opportunity to clear up any remaining questions about his Puerto Rican-Filipino heritage: "I never once said I changed my last name to hide the fact that I'm Puerto Rican. Why would I f*cking say that? Who are you fooling? And why would anyone say that? That's so insulting to me, to my family." He added, "My last name is Hernandez. My father's name is Pedrito Hernandez, and he's a Puerto Rican pimp. There's no denying that."

The reason behind his stage name is, well, actually quite simple and anticlimactic. He said, "My dad nicknamed me Bruno since I was 2 years old. The real story is: I was going to go by 'Bruno,' one name. Mars just kind of came joking around because that sounds bigger than life. That was it, simple as that."

Look ahead for more quotes from Bruno's honest interview.
