In His Spare Time, This Buddhist Monk Is Also a Celebrity Makeup Artist

Buddhist monks are known for their ascetic lifestyles, ones that don't typically resonate with glamour and fame. But Kodo Nishimura, a 26-year-old Buddhist monk from Tokyo, is living a fabulous double life: he's also a celebrity makeup artist.

According to BuzzFeed, Nishimura started doing makeup professionally when a friend saw how happy his skills made her. His client roster includes the Miss Universe pageant (including 2014 winner Paulina Vega) and numerous fashion shows.

Nishimura did experience doubt over pursuing both passions - it may seem like a conflict of interest to be a monk and a makeup artist - but his mentor was the one to assuage any concerns. He learned that "it isn't wrong if it helps you deliver your message to people," Nishimura said.

Since completing his Buddhist training, he has also participated in the Out in Japan project, which spotlighted prominent members of the LGBTQ community in his country. After that photo shoot, he started to give back by offering free makeup lessons to transgender women and others who were interested in learning more about the craft. "When I participated in the 'Out in Japan' photo shoot, I met a lot of transgender people. Many of them weren't familiar with makeup, so I wished I could give them advice," he said.

"As a Buddhist monk, I want everyone to live happily in harmony. I believe makeup is one of the tools to make yourself happy, and if you're happy, it becomes easier to be kind to others," he told BuzzFeed. "In that sense, I think it's a good link." Read on to see more shots of this inspiring man.
