Michael Keaton Profusely Apologizes For His "Hidden Fences" Flub at the Golden Globes

At the 2017 Golden Globes, a strange thing happened: people kept mixing up the movies Hidden Figures and Fences, both films with predominantly black casts. First Jenna Bush made the red carpet gaffe while interviewing Pharrell Williams, and later on Michael Keaton mistakenly called out Octavia Spencer for her work in "Hidden Fences" (she stars in Hidden Figures) while presenting the award for best supporting actress in a motion picture at the 74th annual ceremony. The flub was instantly picked up by commentators on social media, who noticed that it seemed to be a recurring mistake throughout the night (you can watch the awkward moment as it unfolded in the video above).
Like Jenna before him, Michael has reached out with a heartfelt apology for his actions. "I'm very, very sorry about that. I feel very badly," Keaton told Us Weekly at the premiere of his new biopic, The Founder. "I get that people thought I was nonchalant about it . . . I get it now." He went on to add that he had no idea what had even happened at first. "At the time, I thought, I don't know what people are talking about . . . since then, people have told me, 'Well, people are upset for this other reason.' That truly makes me feel horrible now. I feel badly that people feel badly."
The Hollywood icon's mistake ended up being one of many awkward moments at the Golden Globes this year, but he wanted to emphasize that it was not done out of malice. "I'm very sorry for the people that were affected by that," he said. "Especially the people in the movie, who worked so hard, and in front of millions of people, I, like a jerk, screwed the line up. What I always think about is they have brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers and friends at home waiting for them, watching them, and this guy, me, gets up and gives the wrong title! That makes me feel terrible."
