The Heartwarming (but Equally Heartbreaking) Story Behind 1 Principal's Stand Against Bullying

When Jackson Johnston found out about his grandfather's cancer diagnosis, the 11-year-old was determined to show "Papa Rick" that he wasn't alone.

Jackson shaved his head in an act of solidarity after chemotherapy treatments began taking a toll on his grandfather's body, but some of the sixth grader's classmates weren't supportive of his meaningful gesture. "(Kids) started making fun of my hair and joked about my hairline," Jackson told Today.

When Pekin Middle School Principal, Tim Hadley, heard that Jackson was being berated with taunts including, "Hey baldy," and, "You look like you have cancer," he decided against disciplining those students. He had a better idea: he turned those kids' acts of bullying into an impactful lesson on empathy by shaving his own head in support of Papa Rick.

The impassioned principal gathered 175 students together before inviting Jackson to help with his new look. As the child used clippers to buzz his mentor's hair, Tim explained the importance of his haircut to the other students. "At the end of the day, I just felt like there was a greater opportunity to teach how we approach life," Tim said. "We're here to educate, and it's more than just books and curriculum, but about life skills and how we interact with one another."

According to Today, after all of his hair was buzzed, Tim told the students: "Before you judge, before you make that comment, before you think about what you're going to say, really take into account that you don't know what somebody else's life is like. Even if it looks great on the outside - Instagram and Facebook look fabulous - they could be broken on the inside."

After initially having "the worst day ever" because of mean remarks, Jackson found newfound confidence in the decision to buzz his hair thanks to his principal. "I really realized that someone that's not even related to my grandpa actually cares he has cancer," Jackson said. "It meant a lot to me, and it's probably the nicest thing anyone could have ever done."
