This Is the Tribute All Labor and Delivery Nurses Deserve
They help us through the pain, the joy, and sometimes the sadness of bringing our babies into the world. And they deserve so much more recognition than they get.
One registered nurse from Houston aimed to do just that when she shared a heartfelt message on Facebook highlighting the tireless and sometimes unrecognized work that labor and delivery nurses do in their everyday jobs, often at the sacrifice of their own families and children. Even if you haven't given birth with an L&D nurse by your side, this powerful message will remind you how much these healthcare providers do during the most life-changing moments of our lives.
I am just a nurse. A Labor and Delivery nurse. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Well . . .
I am just the nurse who was there during the birth of your child.
I am just the nurse who's family has to experience another day without me because I stayed three hours late to see you through a difficult delivery.
I am just the nurse who will let you leave grip marks on her arm while you are getting your epidural, while repeating to you: "You are doing an amazing job. Almost there. You can do it."
I am also just the nurse who stood by you while you handed your baby to his adoptive mother. I held you steady. I watched you tremble. My heart ached for you.
I am also just the nurse who cried the entire drive home and who's husband doesn't even have to ask how my day was. He knows.
Today.
Every day.
I felt your joy.
I felt your pain.
I wiped your tears.
I calmed your fears.
I kept your secrets.
I taught you how strong you are.
I saved your life.
I saved your child's life.
My body aches.
My heart aches.
And I love every minute.
I am JUST a Labor and Delivery nurse.
Anyone who has welcomed a child with the help of an L&D nurse knows that they are more than just nurses, and this post, which has been shared more than 30,000 times and has almost 8,000 comments, is a touching reminder of that.
