This Nonverbal Boy and His Deaf Boxer Have a Bond Beyond Words
When Brandi Guillet adopted her son at birth, she knew he had a genetic disorder that would affect his communication skills as he grew. Now 6 years old, her son cannot communicate verbally but is able to use some sign language and gestures instead - both of which have helped him form a remarkable bond with the family's sweet 3-year-old deaf Boxer named Ellie.
In a Facebook post to the group Deaf Dogs Rock, Brandi opened up about her son's furry companion. She said, "She is amazing with my son. She is the most gentle, loving girl ever."
In an interview with CBS, Brandi explained that the family began fostering Ellie through the Coastal Boxer Rescue in Florida just a week before Christmas. Brandi said they were drawn to Ellie after learning she only responds to sign language. "To think that Connor can sign to her and actually communicate with her made my heart melt," she said.
Given her son's love for Ellie, Brandi now plans on adopting her! She said, "The most BEAUTIFUL part of this adoption is my son and his dog can actually talk to each other!" She added, "She is such a perfect addition to our family."
