Troye Sivan Releases a Moving and Unapologetically Gay Music Video For "Heaven"
"Without losing a piece of me, how will I get to Heaven?" The question, contained in the lyrics of Troye Sivan's new single, is the thesis of the song. Taken from Sivan's debut album, Blue Neighbourhood, it dwells on the prospect of reconciling one's sexual identity with conservative religious beliefs. The song has a power of its own, but to add even more impact to the music video, Sivan and director Luke Gilford imbued it with clips of historical footage from LGBT history. We see moments from LGBT marches, protests, and rallies. We see loving gay couples from other decades and other generations. And we see Sivan in the arms of another man.
The video is a lot less subtle than something along the lines of Sia's powerful music video for "The Greatest," which paid tribute to the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando. It's a way of saying "I'm gay and proud," just like one of the many signs thrust proudly overhead throughout the video.
