This Is How Losing Weight Affects Your Metabolism - Here's What to Do About It
There's no definitive program to follow when it comes to losing weight. Some start off by making dietary changes while others hire personal trainers and begin working out three times a week. Regardless of what method you choose to lose weight, there's one very important fact you need to know about how weight-loss impacts your body.
Alex Caspero MA, RD, CLT, RYT, explained to POPSUGAR that "you often lose muscle mass when you lose weight, as it's almost impossible to just lose body fat." This may seem like a trivial fact, but losing muscle mass can result in your metabolism slowing down, which can interfere with your weight-loss goals. You may have heard that eating certain foods and drinking water in the morning can boost your metabolism, but Alex said it has nothing to do with the foods you eat. The "secret" to a faster metabolism is exercise.
"The leaner body tissues (muscle) that you have in your body, the more you are able to burn calories without doing anything extra," she said. Beware, though, because not all exercise is created equal. According to Alex, adding more muscle mass by lifting weights "can increase your resting metabolic rate - how many calories you burn each day outside of activity." Instead of focusing on tons of cardio, maintain muscle mass by implementing weightlifting into your workout routine.
Give your metabolism a boost with this four-week beginner weightlifting program.

Having a Mid-Afternoon Slump? Reach For a Cup of Green Tea - Here's Why
From classic tea to matcha, green tea seems to be everywhere. Sipping on a cup or two a day can help you with weight loss and cutting back on highly caffeinated beverages, like coffee and soda, while boosting your energy levels.
Green tea has caffeine in it, which is the active ingredient in your favorite energy drinks and coffee. In fact, all tea, unless explicitly labeled as caffeine-free (usually herbal teas), contains some amount of the awakening ingredient. Because of this, green tea can provide you with a boost of energy that helps you get through the day. Studies support this, showing that drinking green tea regularly can help with energy and endurance.
If matcha is more your style than traditional green tea, we have even better news for you. The delicious, finely ground powder is known for its sharp flavor and for its myriad health benefits - antioxidants and disease-fighting properties, among others. When it comes to energy, matcha is head and shoulders above other caffeinated beverages for one simple reason: it won't give you the dreaded caffeine crash because it contains an amino acid (called L-theanine) that reduces anxiety and high blood pressure and fights those coffee jitters.
Although the health benefits of green tea can be tempting, be sure to practice moderation and, most importantly, listen to your body. Green tea can be safely consumed in large amounts (and a higher quantity may even increase the health benefits), but if you have a sensitive stomach, are pregnant, or tend to be caffeine sensitive, limiting your intake is probably a good idea.
Is Coconut Sugar Healthier Than White Sugar? Your Sweet Tooth Needs to Know
More and more evidence is proving that your sugar habit is detrimental to your health. It can cause bloating, rot your teeth, may trigger acne, and is linked to weight gain and chronic disease. No wonder people are looking for healthier alternatives to refined white sugar. But is coconut sugar the answer? We asked both Dr. Robert Zembroski, a clinical nutritionist and functional medicine doctor, and registered dietitian Stephanie Ferrari to weigh in.
Let's first explain how the two are made. To create refined white sugar, the pulp from sugar cane stalks is separated from the juice, and then the juice is processed and heated until it crystallizes. To get that pure white color, it's often filtered and bleached with bone char, so if you're vegan, your sugar may not be. Coconut sugar is made by cutting the flower of the coconut palm. Once the liquid sap is collected, it's heated until the water has evaporated, leaving that caramel-colored granulated powder.
While it's a bonus that coconut sugar is less processed, Stephanie explains that coconut sugar and white cane sugar are both sweeteners consisting of fructose, glucose, and sucrose. Robert says both contain similar amounts of fructose. "Too much fructose in the diet can disrupt metabolic functions in the liver and is linked to metabolic syndrome - a condition of high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high triglycerides in the blood, and obesity," he explained to POPSUGAR.
As far as the glycemic index goes, a measure of how quickly foods raise your blood sugar levels (glucose), Robert says white sugar has a glycemic index of around 63 and coconut sugar has a glycemic index of 54. Stephanie says, "The lower glycemic index of coconut sugar delays the spike in blood sugar following consumption as compared to cane sugar." That's because, unlike cane sugar, coconut sugar contains inulin, a soluble fiber and a prebiotic, which can slow the rate of absorption into the blood stream.
White sugar offers zero nutrition, which is why it's referred to as "empty calories." One benefit coconut sugar has over white sugar is that it offers small amounts of vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, copper, and phytonutrients. You'd have to eat a ton, though, to get those nutrients, which pretty much defeats the purpose.
Another good point Stephanie brings up is that coconut sugar doesn't taste as sweet as regular sugar, so if you were baking with it, you would have to use more to achieve the same amount of sweetness as regular sugar.
The bottom line is that there isn't much difference between the two sugars - sugar is sugar! Robert says, "While no sugar is healthful, if the choice is coconut sugar or white sugar, coconut sugar appears to be microscopically less offensive."
If you still want sweetness when baking, Stephanie recommends using Swerve, which is made from erythritol (fermented glucose from root vegetables and fruit) and prebiotic fiber. It's a zero-calorie natural sugar replacement that tastes and measures exactly like sugar. Note that it has a slightly cool aftertaste but is definitely sweet, keto-friendly, easy to digest, and worth trying if you want to avoid both white and coconut sugar.
This 20-Minute Tabata Workout Is All About Blasting That Booty!
You might be surprised to know that CrossFit isn't just about lifting heavy-ass weights and flipping tires! Sometimes it incorporates high-intensity Tabata-style workouts. Tabata involves structuring your workout into 20 seconds of pushing yourself hard, followed by 10 seconds of rest, and repeating that eight times for a total of four minutes. These workouts are so versatile because you can practically choose any exercise to do for those 20 seconds, and as long as you push your pace, you'll get in a heart-pumping, butt-kicking workout.
This Tabata workout is all about "blasting that booty," as CrossFit coach Sefton Hirsch of Champlain Valley CrossFit so lovingly says. It incorporates lunges and deadlifts, two of his favorite butt-busting moves.
Tabata Butt Workout

This Is How Long It'll Take For Intermittent Fasting to Work
When it comes to getting healthier and toning up your body, one of the most popular of the countless options out there right now is intermittent fasting (or IF, for short). IF includes several different approaches to choose from, but most involve eating for only a short period of time during the day and/or limiting the amount of calories you consume. The results are apparent to those who've tried the method, but according to the experts, you need at least 10 weeks of following a few basic rules to see any changes.
Read on for more details about how best to make IF work for you, including whether the time of day you're eating has an impact on your waistline and what other benefits you can expect from the method, aside from a lower number on the scale.
I Drank Coffee Before CrossFit For 1 Week, and This Is The Scary Thing That Happened
I recently got into drinking coffee about a year ago because black coffee is one of the drinks you can have while intermittent fasting. In addition to its curbing my appetite, I also love it for other health benefits. I usually drink it starting around 9 or 10 a.m. and sip my very weak 16-ounce cup for about two or three hours (it's 6 ounces of the strong-ass coffee my husband makes, mixed with 6 ounces of water and a few ice cubes).
I definitely don't need coffee to survive. I feel peppy enough without it, and herbal or green tea or sparkling water also does the trick in filling me up if I'm feeling a little hungry mid-morning before my eating window starts at noon.
I can go days where I realize I haven't had one sip of coffee, but when I do have it, it's always after my workout. Many of my CrossFit buddies drink a big mug before class, so I wanted to see if drinking coffee beforehand would improve my performance.
These Are the Worst Drinks For Weight Loss, According to Dietitians
When it comes to losing weight, diet plays a key role: you should load up on whole, nutrient-dense food such as leafy greens, non-starchy vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. You should also eat at a calorie deficit if you want the number on the scale to go down.
Sure, you may have all your meals in order, but what about the calories you are drinking? Sipping on sugary beverages can add hundreds of extra calories to your day, which can stall weight-loss progress or even lead to weight gain. These dietitians reveal the worst drinks for weight loss. If you're trying to slim down, skip these caloric beverages and instead opt for water, unflavored seltzer, or unsweetened tea and coffee.
A Trainer Says Doing This Style of Cardio Will Sculpt and Tone Your Booty
Did you know the gluteal muscles are among the most underused and undertrained muscles in the body? Crazy, right? One of the common causes of dormant butt syndrome, as some like to call it, is sitting. Yes, sitting. When you sit for extended periods of time (you may want to stand up now and continue reading this), your hip flexors tighten and your glute muscles turn off.
The good news is you can begin correcting and activating your booty muscles today (and start getting those gains). It's 100 percent OK to train your butt every day, just be sure to mix up the stimulus in order to prevent over-training and injury. If you're new to strength training, you'll want to begin with no more than three strength sessions a week, in order to allow your body to adapt to the new stimulus. Once you become comfortable with the movements and aren't extremely sore, you can begin to advance your programs.
Personal trainer Ryan Read has transformed a butt or two and told POPSUGAR that he likes to add walking on a treadmill at an incline into his programs to help with booty gains. "I base my whole program on building and burning," he said. "I have my girls lift heavy weights to build muscle and do incline and resistance cardio to burn calories and tone." Ryan said that the combination of lifting heavy weights and doing resisted cardio are "key to getting the lean, full look girls want."
How exactly does walking on an incline help? Glad you asked. Ryan said that it allows the glutes to stay involved while keeping the heart rate elevated and burning calories. "It's highly intense, fast-paced, and makes for a great workout to keep the muscles guessing, which is key to growth."
Start sculpting your booty today with Ryan's butt-transforming workout. And as a bonus, begin implementing these exercises into your strength sessions to really see a change in your assets.
Jennifer Lopez's Workout Selfies Will Have You Signing Up For Another Gym Membership
It's hard to believe Jennifer Lopez just turned 49, especially when she doesn't look a day over 25. When the triple-threat isn't going on dates with Alex Rodriguez, recording new music, or shooting Shades of Blue, you can find her getting it in at the gym. Warning: ahead are J Lo's sexiest selfies.
10 Cannabis Products That Are Vital For Your Self-Care
No matter how busy your life gets with work, friends, family, and relationships, it's beyond important to remember to hit the pause button. "Me time" is vital for your mental health, and discovering ways to promote a healthy self-care routine that will improve your mind, body, and spirit, should be a priority.
By using products that contain non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD), or a low dose of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), you can improve your health while promoting internal stability. Because CBD and THC work synergistically with the body's endocannabinoid system, using products rich with these cannabinoids can help balance your mood, alleviate pain, and provide you with the energy you need to be your best self.
Focus on self-care inside and out with these 10 cannabis and hemp products. Keep in mind that some of these items are only available in states where medicinal and recreational use is legal, but you can also order some products online.
I Tested Protein-Packed Healthy Ice Creams - These 6 Are Quite the Treat
As you try to keep calories down to stay healthy, it's a miracle that more and more brands are releasing healthy versions of ice cream so you don't have to quit your Summer habit - let's be real, Summer wouldn't be Summer without some ice cream!
You know that these healthy ice creams are lower in sugar than the regular thing and that most of them even contain some protein as an added bonus, but when it comes to the cold treat, it's really all about the taste, right? That's why I tried all the healthy ice creams I could find in my local grocery store and ranked them by texture, flavor, and nutrition. This is how they panned out, from OK to a sinfully decadent favorite that I will be buying in bulk.

This Equinox Trainer's Fat-Burning, Bodyweight HIIT Workout Only Takes 10 Minutes
Despite what you may have heard, you don't need to spend hours and hours at the gym to tone up, shed fat, and feel amazing. Martel Martellus, NASM-certified trainer at Equinox, recommends doing HIIT (high-intensity interval training) sessions when you're short on time and want to get in a good workout.
"HIIT workouts can help you burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time," Martel told POPSUGAR. "They also keep your metabolic rate high after your workout so you burn extra calories, even after." That means you'll burn more calories throughout the day, long after you've wrapped up your sweat session.
Not only does HIIT equal more calorie burn, but "it adds as a post-exercise appetite suppressant," Martel said. "It allows for higher levels of fat oxidation in the muscles, which basically means that your lipid molecules (fat cells) are broken down into smaller sizes and used for energy rather than excess storage, which contributes to weight loss." Sounds good to us. Where do we sign up?
I did a HIIT workout with Martel last week, and it was a tough one. We did seven different exercises for 20 seconds and rested for 10 seconds before moving onto the next one. You go through all the exercises once, rest for 60 seconds, and repeat two more times for a total of three rounds. That only equals 10.5 minutes of work. You can do anything for 10 minutes! And the best part is, you don't need any equipment for this session.
Here are the exercises, and descriptions for each one are below.
- Split lunge jump + squat
- Plyometric push-ups
- Mountain climbers + burpee tuck jump
- Shuffle + curtsy lunge
- Reverse burpee
- Lateral hops
- Split lunge jumps

What Is a Keto Fat Bomb? This Keto Diet Secret Weapon Will Keep You on Track
There's no denying that the keto diet is effective; it's helped countless people lose tons of weight, fight inflammation, and even regulate their blood sugar. But being successful on the diet requires some careful planning and meal prep. After all, the high-fat, moderate-protein, and super-low-carb diet isn't conducive to the standard American diet, which is typically high in refined carbohydrates and processed food.
To stay on track with the keto diet and make sure you are getting enough fat in your day, you may need to incorporate fat bombs. Fat bombs are small snacks or desserts that are extremely high in fat. Not only are these snacks satiating since fat itself is a satiating macronutrient, but they are also a way for people to enjoy dessert, since many fat bombs tend to be "sweet" treats (usually sweetened with Stevia or another zero-carb sweetener). But fat bombs aren't only limited to snacks and desserts; enjoy one for a quick breakfast or as a pre-workout or post-workout treat.
Related: These Keto Fat Bombs Will Make You Totally Forget You're on a Diet
On the keto diet, the macronutrient breakdown is typically 70 to 80 percent fat, 15 to 20 percent protein, and five to 10 percent carbohydrates, usually not exceeding 50 grams of carbs a day. If you're having trouble reaching your fat intake, a keto bomb can help you reach your goal. If you are just starting out with fat bombs, it may be best to start with a smaller serving and work your way up to a full serving size until your stomach gets used to eating that much fat at once. If you tend to get nauseated eating something so dense on an empty stomach, try eating a fat bomb after a meal - a win-win for the keto fat bomb desserts.

If Lower-Belly Fat Is Your Trouble Spot, Then Try This Ab-Focused Workout
Lower-belly fat is a common problem area for people looking to flatten their bellies and tighten their core. Although you can't specifically spot target fat loss - as you lose weight, you can't control which fat cells shrink from which body parts - you can target specific muscles with certain exercises.
To lose weight overall, it's important to eat a healthy diet in a calorie deficit, incorporate cardio and HIIT exercise, and strength train your whole body. But if you're looking to strengthen your lower ab muscles specifically, these 18 exercises are a great place to start. Best part? Most of them are equipment-free so you can do them right at home.
4 Ways Intermittent Fasting Helped Me Lose Body Fat Everywhere, Especially My Belly
I used to think that skipping meals was a recipe for disaster, but I quickly learned that intermittent fasting (IF) has a lot of benefits that can help you lose weight and shed body fat. IF isn't a diet, but rather it's a lifestyle where you eat all your meals within an eight-hour window and fast for the remaining 16 hours of the day.
I started doing IF a year ago, and that (coupled with regular exercising) helped me lose a percentage of body fat and drop two dress sizes. I was even able to gain a few pounds of muscle over the course of a few months. IF was a huge game changer for me, and more importantly, it helped me feel my very best. Here are four ways IF helped me lose body fat everywhere, especially my belly.
The Ab and Butt Moves Tracy Anderson Does When She Only Has a Few Minutes to Spare
Many of us know how difficult it can be to maintain our fitness routine when we're on the go. You may not have access to a gym or your schedule might only permit a few minutes at most to get your sweat on. As someone who's traveling constantly, celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson - who's behind the ever-popular self-titled method - knows this struggle all too well.
So, before she led a dance-cardio class for G. Sport Sessions, a fitness experience by Westin Hotels and Goop, I had to ask Tracy for her go-to ab and butt moves for when she's on the road. In white blazer and all, the entrepreneur got down on all fours to share a sequence she'd do if she was short on time and equipment.
See her moves broken ahead!
How Much Cardio Do You Need to Do to Lose Stubborn Fat? Here's Your Answer
If you hit up the cardio machines at the gym hoping to shed fat, you might be wasting your time. Fitness trainer and fat-loss coach Ivica Fridrih addressed the question, "Is cardio necessary for fat loss?" in a recent Instagram post. He said that many people still believe that "doing excessive amounts of cardio is the way to lose stubborn fat."
This Is the Only Group Fitness Class That Actually Kept Its Promise and Changed My Body
I've been in the fitness world for a long, long time. I started doing yoga regularly when I was 18 years old and have been teaching for almost six years. On top of that, I've been a trainer in various settings and have taught movement and wellness at retreats around the world.
My back looked leaner, my arms were more cut, and I could see a little more definition in my abs.
Over the years, I've done and taught my fair share of group fitness classes. However, I've been a bit disenchanted with the world of group fitness lately because it's hard to find a comprehensive program that hits all the targets: strength, conditioning, agility, coordination, skill-based training, and mobility. But that all changed when I found the Epic Hybrid Training Center.
Epic is a HIIT circuit facility that's loosely based on obstacle course race training. You'll do everything from bodyweight plyometric movements to kettlebell strength work and skill-based training, such as monkey bars or rings. And the best part is there are modifications for each and every exercise, so Epic is appropriate for all levels. Whether you're a total beginner or a professional athlete, you will work up a major sweat at Epic and feel accomplished when you leave.
When I started doing Epic regularly, I saw a change in my body within a month. My back looked leaner (to the point where people kept complimenting me on it!), my arms were more cut, and I could see a little more definition in my abs. Epic is the only group fitness class that leaves my abs sore regularly because its programming focuses heavily on core strength. Almost every move you do derives from your core, so you're forced to strengthen your abs with every movement. But you'll also work every other part of your body, leaving you more toned and stronger than before.
Whether you're a total beginner or a professional athlete, you will work up a major sweat at Epic and feel accomplished when you leave.
In the past, I've attended other group fitness facilities regularly and hoped that they would offer me what they promised - to lose weight, get cut abs, etc. But in the long run, most of them let me down because the program was either too injury-prone or just not functional enough long-term. Epic kept its promises to me, though. I've never had an injury, and I've only gotten stronger.
There are multiple Epic locations around the country, and if you live near one, I highly recommend you go give it a try. I fell in love with the variety of the program and how challenged I feel every time I go. I never thought I would be able to travel across monkey bars for a full 60 seconds, but now I can - and it feels incredible! My next goal is to do multiple rope climbs in a row. No matter what, keep in mind that there are modifications for everything, so if a movement looks impossible or difficult, there is a variation that you can certainly do.
I ended up loving Epic so much that I'm now an instructor there. I feel so lucky to be part of a team that is committed to high performance and functional fitness. Come see what the hype is all about!

Um, Panera Is Making DOUBLE Bread Bowls a Thing, So Bring on All the Carbs
When you imagined innovations of the future, you may have dreamed of flying cars or self-lacing sneakers, but did you ever dare to consider shareable bread bowls? Well, this carb-lover's fantasy is becoming a reality on August 5, thanks to Panera's new double bread bowls.
The bakery's genius creation features a whole loaf (yep, you read that right) with two cutouts ready to be filled with soup or mac and cheese-y goodness. You can grab your best friend, your significant other, your parents, or an acquaintance from your morning commute, and share this delicious dish together. Or, if you love yourself, dig in solo and enjoy your savory snacks side-by-side.
Now that I have your attention, there's just one unfortunate catch. Since the double bread bowls are still in the"testing" phase, our lucky friends in the Philadelphia area are currently the only ones with access. The test run expires on August 31 and there's no telling if they'll be released nationwide - sigh - so for now, we'll keep our fingers crossed and start looking for flights to Pennsylvania ASAP.

Truly Is Releasing a Rosé Spiked & Sparkling Water - and Yup, We'll Take a Million
I'm going to shoot straight with you: Rosé has never been my first choice off the drink menu at a restaurant. And yes, I know that's borderline sacrilegious during the sweltering Summer months on the East Coast. While my friends' gazes immediately land on the Rosé section of the wine list, I usually go all or nothing with a dry white or a full-bodied red because Rosé registers as just a little too sweet for me on the average afternoon.
With that said, I never balk at the opportunity to try something new. So when the folks over at Truly Spiked & Sparkling Water asked if I wanted to try their top-secret new Rosé flavor, I was obviously game. Soon enough, I was perched on a New York City rooftop with a sneak peek of the not-yet-released beverage. Someone handed me a slightly suspect-looking brown bottle without a label that probably should've had beer in it - but alas, it was a cold glass of Rosé sparkling water - and it was divine.
So what exactly can you expect in terms of flavor? Pretty much all the fruity notes you'd expect from Rosé with a heck of a lot more bubbles and only 100 calories. As a take-it-or-leave-it girl in the Rosé department, I have to admit I was extremely impressed. With a five percent ABV and only one gram of sugar, this has subtle citrus notes without the excessive sweetness that leaves you with a hangover if you go a tad overboard.
Another huge selling point? How freaking adorable the can is! Because nothing is more fitting for a late Summer beach trip or a bonfire than a sleek can (no bottle opener required) with gorgeous pink flowers. Hello, totally Instagrammable beverage.
You can snag a 12-pack for $15 to $17 at select local retailers in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont. Expect Truly's Rosé to hit shelves in the rest of the US by February 2019.

How I Finally Learned to Accept My Depression
I have chronic major depressive and anxiety disorder.
I was 15 when I started noticing signs of depression and anxiety. It started out small - I lacked motivation to fulfill daily tasks, or I suddenly dreaded any interaction with others. People told me it was a "phase" and I would eventually learn to outgrow it, but I didn't believe them.
Oct. 17, 2014
Yesterday I was unexpectedly sad. There was no way to explain it besides just feeling useless in the moment. I don't know what I want to accomplish anymore, and I have trouble getting myself to feel any motivation. It's like I lost touch with everything around me, and my body is being inhabited by another person. I want to be like my old self, but it's not working.
How Anxiety and Depression Control My Life:
It's not a good feeling. Anxiety, stress, and doubt rise from within, like bile, and convince me I'm going to fail no matter what. Somehow, the mentality manifests to physically harm me. As much as I want to force myself to hold it all in, it can't be stopped. There are days the panic attack will make me lose feeling first in my toes and eventually throughout my whole body, making it impossible to stand. It's a matter of repeating the same sentence - "I'm OK" - until I actually believe it a little. I catch my breath and tell myself it's over because I'm wasting time sitting around and waiting for the next one. The problem is, every time it happens, I'm too exhausted to do anything about it.
Every day I'm here, I have to try to live fully and thoughtfully because I didn't make it this far and put in this much effort to let go of my own worth now.
There are times when I can bear it a little better, and I'll be free for a whole week without an attack. Every once in a while, it will last for hours in a day. I'm not convinced it'll be different in the future. It just feels like a part of me now. Whether I like it or not, it will affect me in some of the worst ways. A lot of people tell me to deal with it, as if it's something that needs to be tamed. What they don't realize is, in reality, I feel like I'm constantly fighting myself. I can't ignore it and I can't fix it. Yet the world keeps telling me I'm responsible for somehow treating an incurable mental illness.
April 24, 2017
There's no way to really feel what I feel, but I just need people to be OK with me. I don't want people to judge me like I'm damaged, because then I'll start to believe them. Isn't a mental illness just like a physical one? We work hard to overcome what challenges we face. It's not our choice to be ill. I never asked for all this to be a part of my life. I'm jealous of everyone out there who will never experience the level of depression and anxiety I face. I'm only 18. How have I been dealing with this for nearly four years already? I've already tried three times. Sometimes I think I'm mentally insane. Is this just a part of life? It confuses me, too.
How I Cope:
When everything first started, I quickly learned how to lie to doctors and therapists because I believed they couldn't "fix me." However, there was always a part of me that wanted to scream and plead them to do their job - to help me get better. Nearly four years later, I finally accept treatment. It does serve its purpose. I find techniques and tricks to calm myself down, I take medication to alter my brain, and I try to surround myself with situations that bring ease. Beyond that, I also learn how to reconstruct my resting places. Simple activities like taking photos to share on Instagram, picking up someone else's worn piece at a thrift store, and watching students pass by as I sit on campus reminds me I'm not as lonely as I think. Then, my anxiety and depression lays to rest.
Jan. 15, 2018
I admitted there was something not right with me. Dad said he was nervous for me. That he finally realized something was up. Leo and Naomi told me they were proud. They were happy I finally admitted it because, for years, they were worried how everyone seemed to treat it as a phase. Even I tried to convince myself I was getting better. I just needed some peace of mind.
The Biggest Lesson I Learned:
A "normal" life doesn't exist. Life sucks sometimes, and it doesn't always go the way I expect. Early on, I was convinced I would never be able to share my illness - it was me against the world. Regardless of how long it took, I'm finally learning how to accept and ask for help. I also gained a new perspective over the years: I find it easier to empathize with others because I get the extent pain and anxiety can damage someone's spirits. Being able to open myself up a bit more to the people around me also helps me relearn the value of trust and respect and saves me from wallowing in self-pity.
Depression is still something I will continue to deal with every day. Sometimes, it gets pretty miserable when I'm reminded there is no cure. But if I make it through one day, days start to add up to weeks, months, and years. Eventually, I will be able to look back and be amazed that I actually made it through. Despite all the negative stigmas, doubtful gazes, and my own fears of living, life isn't as much of a b*tch as I thought. I know my limits haven't been reached and I'm still finding myself some well-deserved happiness, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the little victories in life right now. If my depression has taught me anything, it's this: Every day I'm here, I have to try to live fully and thoughtfully because I didn't make it this far and put in this much effort to let go of my own worth now.

Thrill-Seekers, Would You Ride This Dangerous-Looking 180-Foot Forest Slide?
Remember those really tall carnival slides you would go on when you were a kid? You would sit on potato sacks and slide down from way above the ground. Or maybe you recall the playground slides where groups of children would gather around the stairs leading up to them, excitedly waiting their turn to slide down. Now imagine a slide, similar to these two, but just much, much higher and nearly 180 feet in length, amid a forest - dreamy, right?
This famous 180-foot giant slide is located at Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald in Germany and is open from mid-March through early November each year from morning until later in the evening. To get to the top, slide-goers must travel up a curving wooden tree walk that takes you high above Germany's Black Forest, offering a scenic view of one of the country's largest vacation destinations along the way. Visitors, ages 6 years and up, use large, sliding mats to plunge down the 180-foot tunnel, winding tens of stories down and eventually landing at the base of the forest.
If you plan on visiting this corner of the world and are looking for a thrilling experience, be sure to check out the slide at Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald while you are there!

Why Do You Spend So Much Money at Target? A Former Employee Tells All!
Every time I get to the register at Target, I am shocked and appalled by how much money I have spent. As someone who has learned how to budget during the last year, I can't walk into the store unless I know it's for something that I absolutely need and cannot get anywhere else.
I used to chalk this up to the time of day I was shopping. I'm a night owl and tend to make a Target run after a nightly gym session. Maybe, I thought, I was wound up and in a shopping state of mind. Maybe it was because subconsciously I wasn't ready to go home, unwind, and head to bed. I found myself in the deepest corners of the store, looking at things I couldn't possibly ever use but wanted anyway.
Then I realized it's not just me who has no self-control when it comes to a visit to Target. It's EVERYONE.
As a journalist, I wanted to know why this could possibly be. How could one retailer get me to spend so. much. freaking. money? So I set out to find the answer for me and for you, because money does not grow on trees. When I found a good source, I begged them for information. Coming from corporate, this person knew what goes on behind the scenes and gave me a bit of insight into what goes in to every store. Here's what they told me, anonymously.
Store Layout
The store is bright. It's fun. It's open for the most part, with aisles flanking the sides. Those aisles contain bright, fun colors as well as staples. The end-caps to those aisles have eye-catching products on them. Sometimes these are special items; sometimes they are just merchandised creatively. Either way, the end-caps are meant to entice you to walk down the aisles looking for more items that are similar to the one you were attracted to in the first place. It's there where you find that pair of emoji socks that you just have to have right now for no other reason than that they're funny.
The open sections of the store are meant to encourage browsing and lingering. Therefore, if you are looking for one black tank top because you just need one black tank top, you've now found two new sweaters, a stellar pair of leggings, a cute dress for date night, and a new hat. Did I mention you totally forgot about the black tank top you needed? Well, there's your reason for returning (which is exactly what they want you to do!).
Product Selection
Target contributed to LaCroix's popularity, a fact we are so thankful for. (Praise be to that bubbly nectar of the gods.) This is just one example of the impact Target's serious product selection skills have on consumers. The brand walks the line between bringing in new and exciting things while staying true to the goods that have made it a go-to for many people. The company also has an intriguing private-label program and is tough on exclusivity with new products.
Also, because Target is always freshening the assortment and often does not replenish products once they're gone (depending on department), it creates a "buy now" mentality with its customers. If you see pamplemousse LaCroix, you better purchase it ASAP, because it may not be there next week. That top you love? Grab it while you can, because when it's gone, it's gone.
Sales
The circular dictates a lot and is always changing. Corporate creates sales based on seasons, close-outs, and consumer shopping trends. Sometimes buyers are pressured, needing to drop the price on one category and still trying to figure out how to make sales numbers (sales dollars and units are measured differently), while others feel the circular is a blessing. Either way, the constant stream of new sales and the strategy behind them make it easy to spend extra dollars.
Atmosphere
There was a rumor going around the interwebs that one of the reasons you spend so much money at the store is because it's quiet. My source would not confirm or deny the music rumor. However, beginning late last year, Target started adding background music to stores, so jury's still out on whether the lack of music was one of the reasons your wallet is so much lighter after you leave.

How to Be the Best Plant Parent to Your Skin-Saving Aloe Vera Tree
Since moving into my studio apartment, I've told people I live alone. In fact, I actually have a secret boarder, and his name is Kevin. He is a little prickly, loves to spread out, and takes up the only window in my place. That's because Kevin is an aloe vera tree.
Kevin requires a lot of maintenance and care - I tell people he's preparing me for motherhood. I have to water him, clip him, and sing to him. (The carbon dioxide my breath omits helps him grow.)
Taking care of an aloe plant is a little bit of work, but it's not a one-way street. Along with keeping me company, Kevin provides a plethora of skincare assets. Even Drew Barrymore is a fan of his kind. Here are a few ways aloe vera can help your skin.
- It calms redness: If you pop open an aloe vera stem, some pus-like goo will come out. It may not look pretty, but it's a natural anti-inflammatory. That means it helps to depuff, soothe redness, and kill bacteria. If you pop it under your eyes, it will reduce swelling that comes with seasonal allergies or staying up too late. Similarly, it will quench dry skin. The antibacterial element kills surprise zits that have already started to come to a head.
- It brightens: Got hyperpigmentation? Aloe plants naturally contain vitamin C, which works to brighten dark spots over time. Apply gobs of the stuff to your acne scars before bed, and you'll see a difference with continued use.
- It treats dry scalp: If you've got a blender and an aloe stem, you've got a DIY scalp treatment. Pop the goop from a stem into your blender, and pulse until it's a spreadable liquid. Rub it into your hair and scalp at night, then wake up and rinse. You'll feel dandruff- and flake-free, and your hair will shine.
- It soothes sunburn: OK, we probably know this already, but it bears repeating: aloe will soothe the sh*t out of a sunburn. Of course, the best way to treat a sunburn is to not get one in the first place, but if you do, rub the plant's innards on your burn for near-instant relief.
To be the best plant parent ever, be sure to give aloe vera the conditions it needs to survive. These are desert plants; as such, they demand tons of sunlight and won't survive if you don't give them prime window real estate. Be sure to put yours in a planter that has holes, which will drain water (this $18 Amazon option is a good bet), as aloe doesn't like to sit in wet conditions.

3 Tips For Getting Rid of a Saggy Neck (That Actually Work)
Sure, turtlenecks are back in style, but every once in a while, your neckline just wants to drop it down low. (Especially if you're Kendall Jenner.) There's nothing wrong with baring some décolletage, but if you feel self-conscious about your neck, you might feel a little shy about buying that deep-V.
Loose skin in the neck area can be caused by a variety of factors. "Saggy necks are caused by age, sun damage, and smoking," Dr. Douglas Senderoff of NYC's Park Ave Aesthetic Surgery told POPSUGAR. It can also be hereditary, so you may have inherited the issue from a parent. According to Dr. Andrew Paul Ordon, people who have fair skin tend to show the appearance of aging more, while people who are black, Latinx, or Asian have thicker skin and are less likely to have a visibly sagging neck.
That said, just about anyone who owns a smartphone is at risk: "Tech neck is what we've started to call what happens to skin from constant bending down to look at devices," said Dr. Purvisha Patel, a Memphis-based dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare. Luckily, there are a few ways to firm things up - and you don't have to turn to surgery. Keep reading to learn how to keep your neck in check.
